Japan Surplus Store (BF Paranque)

$

I've always been curious to check out this Japan Home and Office Furniture store along President's Avenue in BF. Not to be confused with Japan Home Centre or Daiso, this is a surplus shop selling second hand furniture and home accessories.

The pieces I've seen displayed outside seemed promising. So I finally found the time to drop by a few weeks ago to check out the prices and to see more stuff.

Upon closer inspection though, I realized that these pieces definitely needed some work. Most were in good condition but you could tell they were definitely used and even old. And what was even more surprising were the prices! Can you believe this black chair pictured below (left) was about P3,500? And you needed to have it reupholstered pa in my opinion since the fabric was dirty and had stains. These tall chairs on the right meanwhile caught my eye since they had that vintage vibe and I could already imagine repainting them in a bright color. However, they didn't seem sturdy enough anymore when I held them. Definitely needed more repairs.

There's more stuff and knick-knacks inside. Be prepared though, it was very dusty and quite hot.

From the first glance, I already knew I wasn't interested in anything. And again, the prices were a bit too expensive for me considering these were surplus stuff. My mom was interested in a bowl that she wanted to put plants in. I swear there was nothing special about it so we were so surprised when we were told it was P650! Ummm, di bale na lang, sa SM na lang kami bibili, bago pa!

These figurines/dolls were probably the only thing I would consider buying...

Again, just to give you an idea of the prices, this cabinet was P9,800 and that center table at the back was P5,800...

Those big cabinets at the back were about P18,000 to P20,000...

they also sell bikes btw

Bottomline, I didn't buy anything from here. If I saw something really unique and special, for sure I would have gotten it. But based on what I saw, I'd rather go to the mall where I can buy brand new stuff for much less. And I wouldn't have to exert effort to paint or fix things anymore. And for the plates and ceramic items, just go to Uniwide or even Landmark for a better and much cheaper selection. But who knows, maybe you can find some hidden gems here if you look hard enough.

Other uses for breastmilk storage bags

If you're a nursing / pumping mom, you definitely know that you shouldn't reuse your milk storage bags. However, I find it such a waste to throw them away especially if you paid good money for them. And I figured, these bags are more durable than the regular Ziploc bags since they're made to keep our precious milk safe. So they're thicker, leak-proof and even have a double zipper seal.

Anyway, after I've used a milk storage bag, I make sure to wash it thoroughly and check if there are any leaks. When they're all dried up, here are some ways I reuse them:

For toiletries
Who here has carefully packed their toiletry kit then found it all wet after a shampoo or lotion bottle leaked? I found that milk storage bags are perfect for travel sized containers. I pop about 2 bottles in each storage bag, then put everything in my toiletry case. It keeps things more organized, plus no more worrying about my luggage getting wet!

Our yaya has also used these bags to put powder detergent (if you want to bring some when traveling).

Storage for travel
Basically you can use these bags for storing and organizing anything when you travel, just like you would in a normal Ziploc bag. I've used these for bringing medicine tablets:

As well as my daughter's hair ties, clips, and ribbons. I've also used these for my jewelry too.

Waterproof phone case
Milk storage bags are the perfect size for a cellphone when you go to the pool or the beach! So no need to buy those special water resistant casings for your phone. And since milk storage bags are leak-proof, you can be sure that they'll keep the water out. My hubby uses this whenever he works out or trains for triathlon. He can check his phone even if he's sweating buckets or right after a swim. It can also work with your digital camera if it's small enough too.

Wallet
My hubby also uses this for his money when he works out. Of course you don't want to bring your whole wallet if you're going for a run or a bike ride. You can just stuff the storage bag with your cash in your pocket and again, it's waterproof.

So if you're a nursing mom like me who hates throwing anything away, I hope these were useful ideas for recycling your storage bags. Or maybe you're done with breastfeeding and have unused milk bags you don't know what to do with. At least you can use these first before buying new Ziploc bags right? ;p

DIY Paper Tassel Garland

Here's a super quick and easy project that you can use to decorate a dessert table or maybe a kid's room.

This only took me less than an hour to do and all you need are the ff:
- crepe paper (in various colors of your choice)
- scissors
- scotch tape
- yarn / string

Open and spread out the crepe paper completely.

Fold in half horizontally and cut into 8 sections.

Get a section of paper and start cutting about 1" strips, leaving about an inch at the top where the folded part is.

Unfold the crepe paper and it should look like this:

Start slowly rolling the crepe paper all the way inwards. Warning. the tassels sometimes get tangled up though, so be careful since they can rip easily.

Twist the middle part until it forms a small loop. Use scotch tape to secure the knot.

Repeat with the rest of your crepe paper.

When everything's done, just thread your string through the loops of the tassels.

Then just hang it up for instant cuteness! Since it's just made of paper, it's pretty light so masking tape will do the trick. Here's how I used it for the desert buffet I made for our grandpa's 95th birthday. More on that party soon! :)

Craving for Custaroons

I'm currently addicted to these yummy custaroons by Gigi Gaerlan. To the uninitiated, a custaroon is "a deliciously unique combination of smooth and creamy flan topped with a chewy, buttery crust".

This business started out in a small shop at St. Pio Chapel compound in Libis. The first time I tasted this was when my brother-in-law's girlfriend, who lived in QC, brought some for us. It was love at first bite! The top layer is a chewy macaroon crown and the bottom layer is a melt in your mouth flan.

Since then, I've been hooked and I was so happy when I started seeing their kiosks in different malls around the metro.

The Custaroonery kiosk in Century City Mall

I also love the design of their boxes which come in different colors. Also makes this a nice gift idea. :)

You can choose from 2 flavors, original or cheese. I prefer the original although the cheese actually tastes the same for me, it's just creamier. It comes in 2 sizes, the regular custaroon which is about 2" in diameter and the mini ones which are half the size. I personally prefer the mini custaroons since they're easier for me to eat. ;p

Box of 15 (bite-size)
original - P210
cheese or half/half - P240
Box of 6 (regular size)
original - P210
cheese or half-half - P240

If you haven't tried these yet, you definitely must! You can check out their website www.custaroons.com for more info on their products, pricelist and branches. Happy eating! :)

My Ukay-Ukay Finds

I had my very first ukay-ukay experience back when I was still working in my first job fresh out of college. Our office was in Makati and I remember me and an officemate had to do something near Makati Cinema Square. Of course, we ended up checking out the ukay stores there before heading back to the office. I was a bit hesitant at first, but then I remember finding this blazer which fit me so perfectly! It was in great condition and I think it was just P250! Ever since then, I was hooked!

This continued when I transferred to a big advertising agency where it was kind of considered part of your job to look good. I remember not wanting to repeat outfits (kaloka diba?) so I really loved shopping to death! It was "the cheaper, the better" for me, so going to ukay-ukay shops gave me great mileage for my salary at that time. I always waited for them to go on sale since I considered the new arrivals which cost about P200 expensive na haha! I remember finding lots of unique and vintage finds, some as low as P10 each! I would get lots of compliments on my outfits at work and I would just think to myself "if only they knew where I got this" haha! There was even a time it got popular in Multiply with lots of "vintage" shops popping up, remember? I couldn't resist shopping from there too lol! ;p

But of course, I grew older and I started thinking that I should invest in more quality pieces. So I grew out of my ukay phase. Until my sister reintroduced me to it again recently! She studies in La Salle so she and her friends have discovered some ukay stores in Pasay. Warning though, it is not for the faint of heart! We took the jeep in the crowded areas of Libertad and ended up walking most of the way since it was so traffic. We passed by wet markets and lots of trash on the streets. But you just have to suck it all up for the sake of shopping right haha! It was such an adventure and I'm happy to share with you my loot. It wasn't sale in some of the stores, but I'm proud to say that the items I bought ranged from only P60 to P180. Not bad right? :)

This piece caught my eye because of the vibrant colors. It's sheer so I'm planning to wear a black dress underneath it. Or maybe layer it over a tank top and shorts for a more casual look.

This dress looked so cute on! I love how the skirt is so full and kinda balloons out when worn.

My weakness is anything embroidered. So I just had to get this top with these lovely details on the chest area. So pretty and perfect for summer!

There's no shortage of peasant tops in any ukay-ukay. Glad I found this one which looked good and not as worn out as the others.

There are a lot of branded stuff in ukay-ukay stores, you just have to keep a sharp eye out for them. Found this gorgeous F21 blouse with all the beading pretty much intact save for a few loose threads. I believe I got it for just P120. :)

I was looking for a nice parka jacket for ages and finally bought one in Stradivarius for about P1500. But look what I found in the ukay-ukay for less than P200! It almost looks the same, the color is just different.

Also saw another jacket which looked the same but for the price, I just had to get it too. The color is slightly darker and there's no hood. Love the neckline and the placement of the zipper as well. Can't wait to wear this when I travel. :)

My favorite thing to buy in an ukay-ukay is probably skirts since you can find so many nice and unique designs. And I don't know, parang it's more hygienic to wear these from an ukay-ukay rather than pants dba? haha! I'm obsessed with pleated skirts so I'm glad I found this paisley printed number.

I also love the nautical feel of this flowy midi skirt. Looks so classy don't you think? :)

Anyway, since these are second-hand clothes, you have to take special care in washing them too. Here's a few tips from my mom:
- Soak the clothes in water with vinegar for a few hours to disinfect them and remove the germs. Separate your lights from the dark colors.
- After that, rinse and then soak in water and detergent (to remove the vinegar smell). My mom also said to sprinkle some salt on the clothes to ward away the bad spirits (napanood daw niya na sinabi ni Kris Aquino hehe). Well, no harm done to do this right?
- Then, you can wash them as you normally would.

Shopping in an ukay-ukay can be a hit or miss. But you definitely have to be prepared to rummage through hundreds of pieces, sometimes in a dusty, hot, non-airconditioned place. Make sure to check the clothes carefully for holes, rips, discoloration, etc. Sometimes, you can overlook some of the minor defects especially if it's such a unique piece. You can always have it altered too if it doesn't fit right, but depends if you want to spend extra pa. Overall, ukay-ukay shopping is an adventure and you will definitely come out of it with treasures that won't hurt your wallet. :)

Mother's Day with Project Mom

I was so fortunate to be part of the 100 Lucky Moms who were chosen to attend Project Mom's special event on Mother's Day.

at the Glorietta 5 Activity Center

The Project Mom book is the brainchild of gorgeous moms Amanda Griffin-Jacob and Bianca Araneta-Elizalde. At the event, they each spoke about their experiences as mothers and gave helpful tips and insights into motherhood.

All the moms in attendance were also beautifully serenaded by the Mandaluyong children's choir.

There were lots of raffle prizes given away and I even won a Rudy Project watch!

At the end of the event, all the moms were given lovely bouquets of flowers from Designer Blooms...

And goodie bags with so much stuff! If you've been following Project Mom on Instagram, you know that they've had a Favorite Finds fair & exhibit the past few weekends leading up to Mother's Day in Glorietta. The products given to us were from the vendors and sponsors during the bazaar, so you know these are definitely mommy approved!

All the moms were also given Melissa shoes. There was only 1 style and unfortunately they were really high wedge heels which I would never wear (I basically live in flats). And the biggest size was an 8 and it was still a little tight on me. So I just gave this to my cousin. ;p

Here's a closer look at what we got:

succulents from Mr. & Mrs. Green
I love this canvas bag from Fluffy Pwets
treats from Snack Box - these were soooo good!
Kitchen Pretty pot holder from Gifts & Graces Fair Trade
chevron pillowcase from Bungalow 300
Mustela products
Moringa Malunggay anti-hairfall products (I definitely need these!)
products from Cycles, Marks & Spencer, Messy Bessy, The Body Shop
Ysabel's Daughter body wash
trinket charms
shirt, keychain, mousepad, sticker from OLX
magazines
Medela pouch bag
hand-painted plate
discount coupons

Sharing the discount code from Fluffy Pwets to all you cloth diapering mommies out there:

So again, thank you to Project Mom for making us all feel so special on Mother's Day. As they say, being a mom is probably one of the toughest (if not the hardest!) jobs out there. But at the end of the day, there's nowhere I'd rather be than with my kids. :)

Product Review: Olay Regenerist #MiracleDuo

I admit that I don’t have a skincare routine. I’m in my early 30’s and all I really do is wash my face in the morning and at night. This might seem shocking for others who have a wide array of cleansers, creams, toners, and moisturizers. But as a mom of 3 young kids, I sometimes don’t even have time to take a decent shower lol!

Ever since I turned 30 though, I made a mental promise to try and take care of my skin more. I can already see signs of ageing like fine lines, bigger pores, and sun spots which I know can get worse as I get older. I remember my grandmother who always looked forever young. Whenever people would ask her secret, she would always say to moisturize! But maybe I’m just clueless when it comes to what products to use in the market today. That’s why I was really excited when Olay Philippines sent over this kit for me to try.

Powered by breakthrough cellular bioenergetics science, Olay launches Regenerist Miracle Boost Youth Pre-Essence. Together with the award-winning Regenerist Microsculpting Cream, the new #MiracleDuoboosts skin energy and gives women noticeably younger-looking skin.

In one of its studies, Olay discovered that women’s skin looks dull, fatigued, and dehydrated as it ages. Skin Cell Energy, as measured by level enzyme of NADP(H) in cells,  is high among young people, but, as women get older, Skin Cell Energy declines.

Skin Cell Energy allows skin to produce and maintain radiance, firmness and hydration. It affects skin’s ability to fight signs of skin ageing and its ability to absorb anti-ageing treatments. Despite this happening on a cellular level, women feel this change: 89% of women feel that the self-repairing nature of skin deteriorates when ageing. 78% of women also feel that the absorption of their skincare regimen is not as good as before.  (Source: International study conducted by Beijing Technical Center, Jan 2014)

The new Olay Regenerist Miracle Boost Youth Pre-Essence is the next breakthrough in skin cell renewal and the latest trend in Asian Skin Care. It is designed to boost the penetration of anti-aging actives of your moisturizer to increase skin cell metabolism and renewal for stunning, youthful skin that looks up to 10 years younger. The first drop starts renewal of a million surface cells and helps visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles, pores and firms the skin. The Golden Amino Peptide [pal-KTTKS] of Miracle Boost Pre-Essence promises:

To boost cell energy by 35% to strengthen skin’s inherent young power
To trigger self-collagen production for bouncy, younger looking skin

The new Miracle Boost Pre-Essence works best when used together with the award-winning Regenerist Micro-sculpting Cream. Pre-Essence helps the active ingredients of the Micro-sculpting Cream penetrate deeper into skin for dramatic results. Together, the two products form the new #MiracleDuoto give you 2X key active penetration into epidermis and skin that looks up to 10 years younger.

With all this information, I was really excited to try the products out. After washing and drying my face, I first applied the Regenerist Miracle Boost Pre-essence. Before anything else though, what I love is the design of the bottle. Once you twist the cap, it automatically draws the serum up into the dropper. This is basically the exact amount of product that you will need for your whole face. It says on the packaging to apply 2 pumps per use for ideal results but I find that 1 pump is already enough for me. A little really goes a long way since the serum spreads so easily on my face. It has a sheer light texture and I can tell that it is absorbed by my skin immediately. With just this product, I can already feel that my skin feels more hydrated and supple to the touch. I let it sit for a few minutes to really penetrate into my skin.

After, I applied the Regenerist Microsculpting Cream. I massaged it on my face using an upward circular motion like it said on the packaging. The product felt rich on my skin but not heavy. Also, my skin can get pretty dry especially in my forehead area. I noticed that it can get flaky when I put on my foundation. This cream really moisturized my face and made applying makeup easier since I felt that my skin was softer.

Both products also had a mild scent which was very pleasant. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like using stuff which I can smell on my face especially if I’m about to go to bed. Luckily, the scent disappears after the product is absorbed on your face.

I’ve been using the #MiracleDuo twice a day (once in the morning after bath and before bedtime) for 5 days now and I’m very happy with the results so far. I can already feel my skin becoming healthier and softer. What more after I finish these products!

For someone who never had a skincare regimen, I think this is a great way to start. I’m definitely glad I got introduced to these products at this point in my life so I can start reversing the ageing process. We will all grow old but we don’t have to look old right? We owe it to ourselves to take care of our skin and look our best. And with Olay’s help, our best beautiful can certainly be achieved.

New Olay Regenerist Miracle Boost Youth Pre-essence (SRP: Php1399) is exclusively available in Lazada.com starting May 2015. Olay Regenerist Microsculpting Cream (SRP: Php1499) is available in Lazada, leading drugstores, department stores, and supermarkets.

Grandpa's 95th Birthday: DIY dessert buffet (& supplier ratings)

We celebrated the 95th birthday of hubby's lolo (which the kids fondly call Grandpa) last month. It was a simple luncheon held at Valle Verde 5 clubhouse and I just did a candy buffet using the party colors of blue and white. I totally loved how it turned out! :)

see how I did the paper tassel garland HERE
candies from the grocery and Divisoria
bought serving utensils from the grocery and just decorated the handles with washi tape

Here are just some of my thoughts from the other suppliers from the party:

CAKE
The cake was from Aggy's Cakes & Sweets. I loved how they were able to  replicate all the little details from a photo that was provided. This is exactly how Grandpa looks like when we visit him for our weekly Sunday lunches! So cute! :)

PHOTOBOOTH
My mother-in-law asked me to look for a photobooth a week before the party. I was already leaning towards one supplier but when I confirmed, they said someone just paid the reservation fee for my date. Good thing iFotoU Booth was available. They actually came out cheaper since they didn't charge me for a transportation fee unlike the other supplier. I paid P3k for 2 hours, but they were so kind to extend another hour for free! :)

CONS: They used a standard backdrop for our package, but I still like how it looked classy even though it had their logo all over it. They also texted me when I was already on my way to the venue to bring a USB for a copy of the photos. Of course I didn't have one with me, luckily I was able to get one from hubby's cousin who lived nearby. I just wish they told me sooner. They didn't even have a CD and if I wasn't able to provide a USB, I would just have to get the photos from their FB page. That's ok, but of course I want the hi-res pics too right?

PARTY HOST
When the family was planning the party, they wanted to get the same host I hired for Skyler's 1st birthday party which was Wizzo since they were so impressed with him. They wanted kasi the party to have a kiddie feel para fun for the guests even if most were adults. Unfortunately, Wizzo was already booked on our event date so I had to look around for other party hosts.

I saw good reviews online for Erney Arcilla and I was curious since I had never heard of him before. I messaged him on his FB page and he replied immediately despite the time of 11pm! He called me the next day and already I was impressed with the way he sounded. I wanted to book him from 12noon - 3:00pm but he said his schedule was from 11am - 2:00pm since he had another party at 4pm. The thing was, we were going to have a mass at the venue from 11am - 12nn so I really couldn't do anything about the time. What we agreed on was that he would arrive at 11am to set up, and then we would just start right after the mass. Since this wasn't a typical children's party, we figured it wouldn't last as long din naman, so sakto lang if he ended at 2pm.

Anyway, I have to say that Erney exceeded my expectations. He was fun, bubbly, articulate, and really kept the guests entertained all throughout. I think it was a blessing that Wizzo was already booked since I think Erney's personality fit the event better. He had to keep the energy high since most of the guests were adults and did not want to participate at first. But he knew what games to play (the Guess the Song game was a big hit especially the 60's & 70's music!) to get everybody excited and involved. He was also always moving around the venue, which was nice since no one had to get up from their seats anymore to give their answers. He was on a tight schedule so he had to scrap the magic show, but he still did a simple balloon twisting activity for some of the kids that were there.

In the end, a lot of people were asking for his number and already talking to him for their events hehe. I'm happy with his performance and I would definitely book him for any of my children's future parties.

It was a great day overall, and we're just happy that Grandpa is still strong and healthy at 95 years old! May he indeed have many more birthdays to come! :)

We finally got to try Your Local when we had lunch there last week. It was a good thing we parked right in front of the building it was at since there wasn't even a signage or anything at the door. But a lot of people sure knew about it, since the place was definitely bustling with customers. :)

Love the industrial vibe of the place in black and white, So sleek and modern.

And I'm especially obsessed with all the subway tiles on the walls. This is my dream wall for my bathroom or kitchen in the future! :)

Here's their menu:

take note, there is an extra charge for requests to split dishes

Here's what we ordered:

Parmesan Fries with Truffled Ketchup

Semi Fried Baby Eggplant
baby eggplant, mascarpone cream cheese compound, ponzu, tempura flakes

Here's the eggplant underneath all that tempura flakes. This dish was hubby's favorite!

I really found this fettucini dish so creamy and yummy. My type of pasta!

The BF Saturday Market

A few weeks ago, I finally got to check out the BF Saturday Market which officially opened just a couple of months ago (on Valentine's Day!). We went just before lunch so we could go around and then of course EAT! :)

It's held in the outdoors so it was a bit hot as expected. But there were lots of trees around which provided shade.

Saw this sign for NO PETS ALLOWED, which I'm sure is a bit disappointing for others who love bringing their dogs wherever they go.

eating area
fountain in the middle of the park

It was definitely smaller than the Salcedo Saturday Market and even the Legaspi one, but there were still lots of unique finds and good food all around! Here's some of the items on sale when we went:

trays, candleholders, placemats, and other decors for the home
super love these wine bottle serving dishes/cheese trays
Siklo bags made from recycled tires/materials
more bags and accessories
beaded items
love these embellished utensils
soaps, lotions, insect repellents, honey
beer making kits (hubby bought a couple of beers from here)
fresh seafood
dried fish
fruits
longganisa
Filipino delicacies
bread

It's so sarap to just hang here and go on a food trip! We were so stuffed from eating so many different types of food! I'm not sure if they have the same merchants/booths every week, but it's still a great way to spend your Saturday morning. Go check it out especially if you're near the area. :)

Ramboy's (Aklan's Best Chicken & Liempo) in BF Paranaque

We always have a hard time deciding where to eat out sometimes because there are so many restaurants in the BF Homes area. We decided to give Ramboy's a try since we've been hearing good reviews about it. The place is really small and they have very limited parking. But it's right beside the Japan Surplus Store in President's Ave. so we were able to park there since it was closed already at night.

you can see them grilling the liempo and chicken through the glass window in front

Here's their menu:

But of course, since the place was called "Aklan's Best Chicken & Liempo", we had to order those. And I have to say it was really good! The chicken was tasty but the liempo was really something else. Especially the balat (skin)! We had to order extra rice pa hehe!

You can also order the chicken and liempo for take-out, which we definitely will do when we have a get together at home or something.

Only con was that you'll smell like inihaw when you step out of the restaurant! But other than that, good food at affordable prices. Will definitely be back. :)

DIY: Repainting my kids' room

$
0
0
I'm probably the most adventurous when it comes to doing painting projects in my kids' room since it's not that big. I know I can pretty much do it myself without spending a whole lot for materials. One of my very first DIY projects was doing this owl tree mural, which is probably one of my all-time favorites.

After, I decided to paint half the wall purple, just to give it an accent color.

Then, I went all out and painted stripes on the ceiling since I figured, why not? ;p

I guess I'd forgotten how much work it actually took to do these projects since after a while, I was itching to make some changes again. Plus the kids were getting older, which meant they could already give me input on what they wanted. Both my son and daughter stay in this room so I couldn't really choose between a "Princess Underwater" or "Power Rangers" theme. ;p

Basically, I knew I just wanted to change the color of the walls first. Of course, it had to be gender neutral and something that would match the striped grey and white ceiling (no way was I repainting that anytime soon since it took me forever to do that!). Honestly, it was so hard to choose especially when I was looking at paint swatches since there were so many nice colors!

In the end, I decided to go with an light blue color called PEACE RIVER in a satin finish. I got a gallon of paint which cost about P1k. This was honestly more than I was expecting to pay for the paint, but it was good quality which meant good coverage. So I figured it was fine since I was going to be looking at those walls for quite some time right? :)

Before I got started though, I first wiped the walls using a damp cloth. This is important since a lot of dirt and residue can accumulate on your walls over the years. Mine was super dusty, I didn't even realize it! I also sanded over any uneven parts from my previous paint job. You definitely want a smooth and clean surface when you start.

it was definitely hard to take the owl mural down, but it's time for a change ;)

Since I was repainting over the owl mural and also the purple half of the wall with a lighter color, I had to get a primer so I could even out the color first. Others might just go ahead and paint over everything at once, but you might need more coats to make sure the old paint color won't show through. Personally, I think a primer saves you time and energy and just ensures a nicer end result.

I loved putting on the primer since I didn't need to be neat about it. It doesn't have to be applied perfectly since you'll be covering it up with your new paint color anyway.

After everything was covered, it was finally time to really paint. I also love how my little assistant was back! She also helped me paint the purple half of the wall before. I had to kick her out after a while though, since honestly, we would never finish with her around! lol ;p

Anyway, if you think it was easy, it was NOT. I definitely need blog posts like these to remind me of the blood, sweat, and tears it took to finish painting the damn room! I blame HGTV for making it look like a breeze haha! And honestly, who here hasn't looked around a small space and confidently thought, "I could paint this in a few hours max!"

Well, it took me 3 days and I almost gave up and hired someone to finish it for me. I think maybe it was because of the cheap paint rollers I used, or maybe I just bit off more that I could chew. But I got the job done in the end and it's beautiful if I do say so myself!

I love how the color turned out! Even though it's blue, the light shade is still feminine enough for a girl. The primer definitely worked since it covered all the old paint perfectly. And the color made the room brighter and fresher, don't you think? My kids are happy and so am I!

My whole body was aching for days after I did this - from all the bending over, reaching up, and going up and down the ladder. I now have a newfound respect for house painters! I told hubby I won't bargain anymore when a painter charges for labor since I now know how hard it is to do their job haha! ;p

I honestly want to paint over a lot more walls in our house (like the accent wall in our living room and also our master bedroom). But with this weather, it will definitely take a while before I do manual labor again hehe! But stay tuned since I have a lot more home improvements coming up soon. :)

Festival Supermall in Alabang now has an extension called the River Park, which houses more restaurants like Mati's Meat & Bread. Managed by the Melo’s Group of Restaurants, Mati’s is known for their steaks and specializes in comfort food with a contemporary twist.

Here's their menu:

And here's what we ordered:

Their steaks were tender and delicious, and the price was not bad at all!

USDA Steak with mashed potato & vegetables
P395
USDA Steak & Fries
P395

I have to say the service was excellent too! We felt so taken care of the minute we sat down all the way to when we left.

And here's a view of River Park at night, which you can also see from inside the restaurant.

We definitely enjoyed our dining experience and will be back for more! :)

DreamPlay in City of Dreams Manila

I've been wanting to bring my kids to DreamPlay ever since I saw pictures of the place in social media.

But side kwento first. We went on a weekday to avoid the crowds and planned to take the free shuttle from SM City BF.  I had already taken this shuttle before with a friend when we had a girls' lunch out at City of Dreams and didn't encounter any problems. The shuttle could fit 10 people including the driver and left every hour and a half starting from 10am.

However, it wasn't so hassle-free this time. We were 3 adults and my 3 kids. When we got to the 10am shuttle, there were 3 seats left but the driver said it wasn't allowed for the kids to sit on our laps. So fine, we said we'll just take the 11:30am one. We had lunch first and I saw that they were selling tickets for DreamPlay in the cinemas. So I decided to just buy there so we wouldn't have to line up anymore when we got to DreamPlay.

Anyway, we went back to the shuttle area before 11am just to check if the van was already there. Well it was, but lo and behold, it was FULL already (as in 1 seat left na lang)! Of course, we were understandably upset since how could the 11:30 shuttle be full already when it wasn't even 11? When I took the shuttle before, my friend and I boarded just 10 minutes before the departure time (11:20am) and there were plenty of seats available. Needless to say, we just took our car since we had already bought tickets so no choice. And we didn't want to get delayed again going home just in case all the shuttles were full na naman. But the funny thing was, a few days after when we passed by SM BF, we saw that they had upgraded the shuttle from vans to mini-buses and there were even 2 in the waiting area! Aba, nagwork ata ang reklamo namin! ;p

Sorry for the long intro, I just had to get it out there since it kinda started our day on a bad note. And this is also a warning to those who want to take the shuttle service. Just be sure to have a back-up plan for transportation.

Anyway, like I said, the one good thing about what happened was that I was able to buy our tickets in advance at the SM cinema outlet where there were no lines. We just got the 2 HOUR PASS, as recommended by my other friends who have already visited the place. There are height requirements kasi for some areas so my kids wouldn't be able to do all the activities naman. And besides, you can extend naman if you want to as stated in their rules: Once the 2-hour and 4-hour pass has already expired, guests may still enjoy the attractions. Charges for extensions shall just be billed at the check-out counter.

KIDS: 100cm up to 17 years old
ADULTS: 18 years old and above

- Children below 100cm are free of charge. Adult with no child will not be allowed to enter DreamPlay
- Adult non-participants and kids 99cm and below may enjoy DreamTales Library and Dream Theatre

If buying your tickets right there in DreamPlay, here's the ticket process:

Since we already had tickets, no more lining up when we got to DreamPlay. The portion where you have to "encode details through tablet" (basically just name and contact number) was also done beforehand in SM BF. So we were just ushered to the DreamShop entrance at the side where all we had to do was sign the waiver and we were given our wristbands at once. I highly recommend getting tickets in advance at any SM cinema outlet since when we left at around 3:30pm, the line was sooooo long already. And I've read lots of complaints about the ticket process being so slow at the main entrance, sometimes people having to line up for an hour up to 2 hours!

this is where we entered, through DreamPlay's souvenir shop
our wristbands: RED (Kung Fu Panda) for KIDS, GREEN (Shrek) for ADULTS, and ORANGE (Madagascar) for babies or kids below 100cm

Anyway, here were the different attractions:

KUNG FU PANDA

Kung Fu Lighting Fast as Lightning
Height Requirement: 100cm
No special clothing requirement

Join in the Kung Fu Panda Dojo and become a Kung Fu master alongside Po and The Furious Five! Ready your Fists of Fury and prepare to kick the dumplings out of your enemies as you train with these KFP legends. Who knows, you may even become the next Dragon Warrior!

Wall of Destiny
Height Requirement: 120cm
Clothing Requirement: Rubber shoes/closed shoes and sleeved shirt required, long shorts preferred

Test your warrior skills and buckle up to climb the Wall of Destiny, where you'll see the Valley of Peace from a dragon's eye point of view!

Thread of Enlightenment
Height Requirement: 140cm
Clothing Requirement: Rubber shoes/closed shoes and sleeved shirt required, long shorts preferred

We weren't able to try any of the attractions in this part since my kids were a bit scared pa. But I think older and more adventurous kids will definitely enjoy the thrill of the rope course and wall climbing

SHREK

Shrek's Swamp Stomp
Height Requirement: 100cm
Clothing Requirement: Socks required for ball pit

Get ready for an ogre the top experience as you tour Shrek's swamp house. Shrek is home to greet you, but he can't seem to find his keys and needs your help to look for them. Just be sure to stay away from his outhouse or you just might get an unpleasant surprise.

Gingy's Kitchen
Height Requirement: 100cm
No special clothing requirement

At Gingy’s Kitchen, you’ll earn how to make a gingerbread man from Gingy himself! Just don’t be surprised if Shrek and Donkey catch a whiff of your delicious treats and make an appearance too!

Warning, the line could get pretty long and they only allow about 15 kids per class. We didn't make the cut the first time so I had to line up for the next batch (while the kids explored the other areas) and waited for about 30-45 minutes. But it was worth it since this was the activity my kids enjoyed the most. I also like how they allow the parents/companions to enter as well to help and take pics. :)

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON

How to Fly Your Dragon (Dragon Slides)
Height Requirement: 100cm
Clothing Requirement: Long Sleeves Shirts and Trousers, Socks Required

Again, my kids didn't want to go on the slides since they were scared. But it definitely looks cool! Maybe when they're a bit older na lang. :)

MADAGASCAR

Whatever Floats Your Boat
Height Requirement: 100cm
No special clothing requirement

Here you make and assemble your own boat and sail it down the river. Our boat didn't even make it halfway through hehe! ;p

AfroCircus
Height Requirement: 100cm
Clothing Requirement: Socks Required

My kids wanted us to join them inside this multilevel play area, but apparently, our wristbands were for non-participating adults. Good thing they just allowed my hubby to step inside and sit in the corner where the kids could see him. There are sudden bursts of loud noises and smoke though, which scared the kids at times.

DINOTRUX

Dinotrux
Height Requirement: 100cm
No special clothing requirement

Join the DinoTrux at this construction site millions of years in the making. Learn how to build and pilot your very own Reptools. Then enlist the support of Ty and the other DinoTrux to create a world unlike any other!

DREAMWORKS

DreamStudio
Height Requirement: 100cm
No special clothing requirement

I liked this activity where they teach you how to make your own animated film. No picture taking allowed inside the studio though, but basically it's just filled with touch-screen computer screens. You can stay for the maximum 15 minutes but you can also leave anytime when you're done.

Dream Theater
Adult non-participants and kids 99cm and below may enjoy the Dream Theatre
No special clothing requirement

Too bad we weren't able to try this 4-D theater, but we were able to experience the one in Universal Studios SG which I think is pretty much the same.

DreamTales Library
Adult non-participants and kids 99cm and below may enjoy DreamTales Library
Clothing Requirement: Socks Required

I love this library area which had lots of comfy beanbags strewn around for lounging or reading (books are provided). However, I was with my baby Skyler (who I'm still exclusively breastfeeding at 1.5 years old) and he must have been hungry already since he started tugging at my shirt. So I dragged one beanbag to the corner and naturally started nursing him. However, the attendant who was tidying up near me noticed I was feeding him and told me that breastfeeding wasn't allowed there. He said they had a mother's lounge outside so I would "be more comfortable." Well to be honest, I was super comfortable there already on the soft beanbag. And I told him that my baby was already hungry (and cranky) so I had to feed him at that moment already. And when I tried unlatching Skyler, he kept crying and making a fit. I was being discreet naman as always and unless you came near me, you wouldn't even know I was breastfeeding. Especially since the library was dark and we were in the corner facing the wall. I looked around and there were only 2 other people in the library just reading and minding their own business. In my mind I was thinking, if he asks me to leave I will really let him have it! Good thing he left me alone na lang. Ugh, can't a mom just breastfeed her baby in peace anywhere she wants to?!

CHEZ GINGY

This is the food court area. We didn't eat here anymore so I don't know if the food is good. But personally, I find it a bit pricey.

We also saw all the character appearances of Shrek, Madagascar, and Kung Fu Panda! Po even had a dance number with other DreamPlay employees.

Other reminders:

Other notes:

- I think the 2 HOURS was enough for me and my kids since they weren't allowed in the other attractions anyway. And personally, they were a bit scared since the place was a dark and loud. I think na-overwhelm sila hehe. We definitely have to go back when they're a bit older pa to fully enjoy the place.

- Go on a weekday, in the morning, if you can. Aside from the rates being cheaper, there are less people. The line was so long already mid-afternoon when we were there on a Monday.

- Definitely get your tickets in advance at any SM cinema ticket outlet or online at www.smtickets.com. This will save you a lot of time when you get to DreamPlay since the lines at the main entrance can get pretty long.

- There was no senior citizen discount given to us when we bought our tickets in SM Cinema. The attendant said it was only for walk-in guests, meaning when you buy your tickets at DreamPlay. I find this weird because shouldn't this be implemented regardless of where you buy your ticket?

- You cannot go in with your kids in the other attractions unless you have a RED wristband meaning you're an "adult participant". This means you have to pay the KIDS rate if you're an adult and want to experience all the attractions. We didn't know about this so we couldn't enter in the other areas and join our kids. Just take note of this, especially if your kids are quite small pa and would want you around.

- If you're a group of adults, you need to be accompanied by a child/children (up to 17 years old) to be allowed entry. Adult visitors with no kids will NOT be granted entry. There's no ratio naman for the number of kids to adults. Like you can be 4 adults and just have 1 kid, that should be fine.

- Credit cards are accepted.

Mothers Who Brunch

If you know me or have been following my blog for quite some time, then you know that cooking is not one of my talents. However, it's something that I wish I was good at and I admire people who are such experts in the kitchen. Especially moms who still find time despite their busy schedules to really prepare their families’ baon for work or school.

That’s why I was really excited when Sab of Sinfully Sabrina and Michelle of Momma ‘N Manila invited me to their wonderful event last May 30. Together with Viking Range Philippines, they organized this intimate gathering of moms held at the Viking Showroom in Westgate Alabang, I definitely couldn’t pass up this opportunity to learn more about cooking and of course, to eat delicious food!

The minute I walked into the venue, I was greeted by this beautiful tropical set-up by Boqueria Lifestyle Market. Everything was styled to perfection from the centerpieces, table linens, down to the woven plate chargers.

appetizer: crudites with ranch dressing by Michelle, chipotle hummus and spinach artichoke dip by Sab

To start things off, Michelle gave us a tour of the different Viking appliances found in the showroom. I’m sure there are some people, like me, who immediately think that Viking is such a high-end, expensive brand. But aside from the quality being top-notch, it’s also the service that can’t be beat. Do you know that if one of your Viking appliances gets broken, they’ll have someone at your door within 4 hours and provide you with a replacement unit for the meantime while they fix your stuff? Now that’s first-class customer care.

And everything’s so high-tech like this oven that has a self-cleaning function. Busy moms definitely need this in their lives!

Can I take home one of everything please? Gosh, this is really a dream kitchen!

After the tour, it was time to cook! Actually, most of the hard work, like prepping all the ingredients, was already done for us (thank you Sab and Michelle hehe!).

There were different food stations and you could choose which dish you wanted to help out with. No surprise, I decided to help with the easiest one, the salad haha!

Then came the most exciting part, EATING! And my gosh, everything smelled awesome! And looked too pretty to eat! Of course, since this is a group of bloggers, we had to take pictures of everything first haha. ;p

Here's our yummy menu. Warning, prepare to get hungry with all the food pics ahead!

Dalandan Mimosa
Pinoy Breakfast Salad
Pakwan Salad
Kangkong and Kesong Puti Quiche
Tomato-Chorizo Stew
Cottage Cheese-Mango Pancakes
Apple Pie
Salted Caramel Ice Cream

My gosh, everything was so good! But if I had to pick a favorite, those pancakes were absolutely amazing! I really will try and make it at home. And that homemade vanilla bean and salted caramel ice cream by Sab was to die for!

And it didn’t stop there. Everyone was given goodies to bring home like a pinakbet veggie basket from Holy Carabao Holistic Farm, a Viking Kitchen apron, terrariums from Sombra Verde, Lucky Mechant Salt from Happy Tree House, Vanilla products from The Vanilla Company, Hurraw! Vegan Lip Balm from Cutieverse, ceramic tile coasters from Boqueria Lifestyle Market, pralines from Choco La Bella, plus GCs from Bikram Yoga Alabang, House of Monogram PH, and Coco Nail Studio. Everyone definitely felt so pampered and special with all these gifts.

But probably my favorite giveaway was this booklet which is a compilation of brunch recipes submitted by us moms. I definitely can't wait to try some of these in the future. :)

So again, thank you and congratulations to Michelle and Sab for organizing this wonderful event. I’m now more inspired to start cooking! And happy to have met new friends whom I was able to share this experience with. Can't wait for the next one! :)

Rodrigo's Roast Beef in BF Homes

I've always been curious to try Rodrigo's Roast Beef since I always see it on lists of restaurants to try in the BF area. It's located on the 2nd floor of an extension building of UCPB, in front of Jollibee at Aguirre St.

Looking up from the street, the place looks really small and hubby and I didn't know what to expect. You go up a steep flight of stairs but once inside, you're greeted by a somewhat narrow but comfortable space which can seat about 20 people. We went at around 7pm on a Friday and we had the whole place to ourselves. It was a bit hot though, I think maybe they had just turned on the aircon? Good thing they had an electric fan that was placed in front of us hehe. ;p

stools to maximize the seating area
And they have a TV! Pitch Perfect was showing when we were there.

Anyway, Rodrigo’s Roast Beef specializes in charcoal-fired, slow roasted,  USDA Angus Beef Belly so we were really excited to try this. Looks yum! :)

Here's their menu:

We decided to get the BOSSMAN'S PLATTER (P728) which was 300 grams of US Angus Roast Beef, half roast chicken, with 6 solid sides. Perfect for the family or the barkada daw! E it was just me and hubby lol! Sorry, we were really hungry ;p

For the sides, we got mashed potatoes, corn and carrots, soup of the day (cream of mushroom), and 3 cups of steak rice!

cream of mushroom soup
mashed potatoes, corn & carrots, plus the gravy for the beef and chicken
steak rice
US Angus Roast Beef
Half Roast Chicken
Bossman's Platter

The 2 of us finished everything, but this can definitely be shared among 4 to even 6 people depending on how hungry you are. For me, the rice was a bit matigas lang, but everything else was good. We'll be back with our family to try the other items on the menu. :)

Staycation at Manila Hotel

I was looking to book an overnight staycation for hubby's birthday last month and chanced upon this Facebook offer for Manila Hotel. It was one of those sponsored ads and you just had to click the "Get Offer" button and this will be emailed to you:

I haven't been to the Manila Hotel in years so I was curious what the place looked like now. I think the last time I stayed here was about 10 years ago? And the offer was inclusive of buffet breakfast for 2 which was a huge plus.

Anyway, I emailed them my preferred date and they got back to me asking for the guest name, bed preferences (king size bed or two single beds) and also credit card details to guarantee the booking. I just called their landline to give my credit card details and they emailed me my confirmation letter after a few minutes. I also asked about early check-in and it was at 12noon subject to room availability.

On the day itself, we arrived at the hotel at about 1pm. And all our bags were scanned through an x-ray machine at the entrance.

the lobby still looks the same from what I remember all those years ago

Check-in was a breeze and we were immediately escorted to our room. I was happy with how spacious it was. And the room looked new in fairness! I was half expecting everything to be really ancient haha, They also had fast wi-fi access btw. :)

king sized bed
huge TV
magazines

love these sliding doors on the windows
here's our view - you can see the pool area on the lower left

But the best part was probably the bathroom - because there was a TV! The kids were so excited they ended up hugging each other out of sheer happiness haha! And for the first time, hubby and I could actually watch our shows on the big TV since the kids preferred to stay in the bathroom to watch cartoons lol! ;p

separate walk-in rain shower

Anyway, the kids didn't want to take a nap so we decided to swim at around 3pm.

elevator areas

I guess everybody was still in their rooms since we had the pool practically to ourselves! Good thing it was cloudy too so it was great weather for a swim. And the water temperature was perfectly warm, probably from the summer heat.

kiddie pool area is the one on the right
more lounge seats overlooking the pool where you can also have a nice view of the sunset
deep part of the pool
more seating areas
kiddie area - love the mini fountains
pool bar

It was happy hour (buy 1 take 1) so hubby had a few beers and I got mojitos. We also ordered fries. I loved the bar area with stools in the water so you can actually sit in the pool while having your drink.

After our swim, we asked if it was ok to have food delivered for dinner and it was no problem. We just ordered from Shakey's and we were given a call when it arrived so we can pick it up from the lobby.

sunset view from our room

I also asked earlier in the day when I checked-in if they had special promos for birthday celebrants. The receptionist said none, but then a cake was delivered to our room when we were swimming. Only problem was, it said HAPPY ANNIVERSARY haha! Not listening si receptionist, toink! But it was ok, hubby was still happy. It's the thought that counts naman. :)

Happy birthday my love!

It was a great staycation and we honestly didn't want to leave. I was pleasantly surprised with how nice the hotel looked, from the rooms to the pool area. The kids said this was now their favorite hotel haha! So for sure we will definitely be back! :)

Breakfast buffet at Café Ilang-Ilang

Part of our Manila Hotel staycation included a breakfast buffet for 2 at Café Ilang-Ilang. It was my first time to eat here so I was excited (and hungry too!). :p

Sabe was with us but thank goodness he's free pa :)

Different seating areas in the resto:

this is where most of the guests where seated, including us
outside seating facing the pool area

According to the Manila Hotel website, "The new Café Ilang-Ilang is a renaissance of chic casual dining which brings together a vast array of cuisines from across all continents. Designed artfully to satisfy the distinguishing palate, the spacious restaurant features an extensive selection of buffet delights with a fresh spin on its various open kitchens and a delectable desserts space that highlights its tradition of unique and excellent dining. Its eight live cooking stations offer Asian, Mediterranean, European, and Western dishes. Café Ilang-Ilang also has a stunning open Pan-Asian kitchen, Churrasco station, decadent dessert station, and an Italian kitchen with a wood fired pizza oven for a truly unique gastronomic adventure. A la carte dishes are also available."

Since this was breakfast, I felt there wasn't as much dishes compared to a lunch or dinner buffet. But the food was still good. Here's a look:

pastries
bread
yoghurt
salad
cold cuts
congee and toppings
Chinese
Korean
freshly made meat loaf!
mixed vegetables, chicken adobo, bangus
pork longganisa, beef tapa
french toast, pancakes, waffles, ham, bacon, sausage
open cooking station
juice

It was a good breakfast, but I'd definitely want to try the lunch or dinner next time.
