Birthday staycation at Crimson Hotel

My son Sabre turned 5 a few weeks ago, and all he wanted for his birthday was a staycation at Crimson Hotel. I actually wanted to try another hotel since we've already stayed in Crimson twice in the past (you can read about it HERE and HERE). But my in-laws went ahead and booked a stay for all of us as their gift to Sabre! Yey! :)

My mother-in-law booked 2 standard rooms. But when we checked-in, the only available rooms were those with two single beds (we wanted a queen bed). So we were actually upgraded to 2 premier rooms with double beds instead which was so much better!

I just really wish they had a bathtub though...

My hubby's favorite thing in this hotel is the ensaymada from their bakeshop found in the lobby. It just costs P45 each and they're actually quite big and super cheesy! I made sure to buy as soon as we checked-in since they get sold out super fast. All their pastries are actually 40% off after 7pm too!

They also have a shuttle which can take you to and from Festival Mall or Alabang Town Center. Just call the lobby for the schedule. Everyone took a nap after lunch, but this little boy was so excited to swim! I was happy to indulge him and spend quality time with my birthday boy. :)

It was a good thing we checked-in during a weekday since we had the whole pool to ourselves. My friend and her family who went during the weekend said the place was packed! Since the pool is on the 8th floor, it was super WINDY but the water was thankfully warm though.

The next morning, which was Sabre's actual birthday, we got a cake delivered to our room. And someone got a bit too excited and almost ate the cake without taking a picture first haha! ;p

So again, happy happy birthday Sabre! He had so much fun on his staycation he's begging for another one again. ;p

A Baby Shower at Tsukiji Japanese Restaurant

Since it's Mother's Day today, I'll be sharing a baby shower my friends and I threw a few weeks ago at Tsukiji Japanse Restaurant in Makati.

When we were deciding where to have the baby shower, we knew we wanted it to be in Makati and somewhere that had a private function room. One of my friends suggested Tsukiji which is actually in the Milky Way building along Pasay Road. None of us have ever tried it before and since we were all in the mood for some Japanese food, it was a go!

Anyway, Tsukiji has private rooms available for groups of 5 to 30. They also have Smoking and Non-Smoking seating, complimentary basement parking, and their menu is available in English and Japanese.

This was our room and it was good for 10-12 pax. They also allowed us to decorate the place although we just hung very simple buntings on one side of the wall.

the excited parents to be!

Anyway, here's what we ordered:

Salmon Sashimi P1,450
Take Nigiri (9 pieces Sushi and 3 pieces Maki) P1,200
Maguro Sashimi P650
Halo-Halo Donburi (breaded shrimp. squid, oyster, fish, pork) P550
California Maki P390
Kaiso - Seaweed Salad with Sesame Dressing P980
Tonkotsu Ramen P550

As you can see, food was very expensive! Although everything tasted ok and was prepared really well, I personally think it's a bit overpriced. But service was good and we had a lovely time. Thank goodness we really had a private room because even though we were just 5 girls, we were pretty loud haha! ;p

Tokyo Travel Diaries: Asakusa & Sensoji Temple

Sharing with you our travel diary from our visit to Asakusa in Japan last fall. What I was excited to see was Sensoji, Tokyo's most famous and popular temple, and also Nakamise, a shopping street where you can buy souvenirs and snacks.

You can go around Asakusa on a guided tour via a rickshaw, but hubby and I decided to just go around on foot.  I read online that a 30 minute tour for two persons costs around 9000 yen.

When approaching the temple, visitors first enter through the Kaminarimon, the outer gate of Sensoji. This is the temple's second gate, the Hozomon, which also has the famous giant red lantern.

Admission to the Sensoji Temple is free and it's open from 6AM to 5PM (from 6:30 in October to March).

the 5-storied pagoda

There's a large pot full of incense before you enter the temple. We just went up to it and did what everyone else was doing which was to wave the smoke towards them. I found out later that it's for healing or good health.

A short walk to the right side of the temple is Asakusa Shrine.

It's also nice to see the Tokyo Skytree from a distance. It's like seeing the old Japan with the new. You can actually take about a 20 minute walk across the Sumida River from Asakusa to the Skytree. But we just took the train since we were tired already. ;p

The temple also looks pretty at night all lit up. Next up, I'll be blogging about shopping at Nakamise Street.

Get There and Around
Asakusa is served by the Ginza Subway Line, Asakusa Subway Line, Tsukuba Express and Tobu Railways. It can also be accessed by the Tokyo Water Bus.

From Tokyo Station
Take the JR Yamanote Line to Kanda Station (2 minutes, 140 yen) and transfer to the Ginza Subway Line for Asakusa (10 minutes, 170 yen).

From Shinjuku Station
Take the orange JR Chuo Line to Kanda Station (10 minutes, 170 yen) and transfer to the Ginza Subway Line for Asakusa (10 minutes, 170 yen).

After visiting the Sensoji Temple in Asakusa, we then moved on to do some shopping in Nakamise Street which was just a few steps away.

The Nakamise shopping street stretches over approximately 250 meters from Sensoji's outer gate to the temple's second gate, the Hozomon. It is lined by more than 50 shops, which offer local specialties and the usual array of tourist souvenirs.

Hozomon, the temple's 2nd gate
vicinity map

Various stuff and souvenirs such as magnets, keychains, fans, toys, clothes, and local snacks are sold along the Nakamise. They can be quite expensive though. I usually buy shirts as pasalubong but the cheapest ones I found cost 980 Yen which is about P400 each. In Sinagpore, shirts cost 4 for $10 (about P340) in Lucky Plaza which makes it less than P100 each! Anyway, it was still fun to browse around and see the different items for sale.

Hours depend on the individual shops, but typically daily from 9AM to 7PM. We just ended up buying some magnets and then I found these boots in one of the stalls for 540 Yen or about P200. I kept thinking they were probably going to break after a few hours, but I wore them all day to Disneyland the next day and they held up just fine. They were super comfy too. What a steal right? :)

We also ended up in one of the side streets perpendicular to Nakamise and found some food stalls. We got some deep-fried curry buns and some kind of breaded pork and they tasted really good. All in all, Asakusa was a great experience!

Tokyo Travel Diaries: Shinjuku Gyoen

Since we traveled to Japan in late November last year, I definitely made it a point to visit parks around Tokyo to see the autumn foliage. Shinjuku Gyoen is one of Tokyo's largest and most popular parks and is located just a short walk from Shinjuku Station.

Admission is 200 Yen per person and you get your tickets from a machine at the park's entrance.

Shinjuku Gyoen is HUGE and you could probably spend the whole day here just walking around and having a picnic. It actually feels like Central Park in New York since it's so amazing that this sprawling property is in the middle of the city.

The park is apparently one of the best places in the city to see cherry blossoms during spring. But if you can't visit in the spring, autumn is definitely the next best thing. The red and orange colors of the leaves were so beautiful! I think fall may just be my new favorite season. :)

It was so relaxing to just walk around, especially in the cool weather. And there weren't that much people around when we visited, which was on a Wednesday morning. But since the park is so spacious, I don't think it could really get that crowded. It really felt sometimes that hubby and I were the only ones there.

It started to drizzle for a bit and good thing we came prepared with an umbrella. That's why always check the weather forecast for the day when traveling. ;p But I honestly didn't mind since I always wanted to take pics with a clear umbrella haha!

Every inch of that park was Instagram-worthy, I kept thinking to myself this would be such a great place to have a pre-nup pictorial right? I wish I'd worn a flowy dress haha :) I kept stopping and asking hubby to take my photo everywhere! Anyway, WARNING! More pictures ahead!!!

This was definitely one of the prettiest places I've ever seen. I don't think we were even able to cover the whole park since we were kinda rushing as well. This was our last full day in Tokyo and we still had a lot on our itinerary. So I hope to visit again during the cherry blossom season in the future. :)

Get There and Around
Shinjuku Gyoen has three gates: Shinjuku Gate is a ten minute walk east from the "New South Exit" of JR Shinjuku Station or a five minute walk from Shinjukugyoenmae Station on the Marunouchi Subway Line. Okido Gate is also a five minute walk from Shinjukugyoenmae Station on the Marunouchi Subway Line. Finally, Sendagaya Gate is a five minute walk from JR Sendagaya Station on the local Chuo/Sobu Line.

Kids Room Inspiration: Bunk Beds

My 6 year old daughter and 5 year old son have been bugging me for a bunk bed for quite some time now. And more so since our vacation at Legoland Malaysia because the hotel rooms there have bunk beds for the kids. They're currently sharing a room with a pull-out bed, but I'm sure that's not as fun for them right? ;p So I've been looking around online, trying to get some ideas. And boy, even I got excited with the idea of having a bunk bed! These designs are amazing!

I'm sure any kid would love this playhouse inspired bed

source

I love the built-in drawers for more storage space
source

source

I like the modern, industrial vibe
source

I LOVE the colors and prints! And those windows are so cute too.
source

And who says bunk beds are only supposed to be double? This TRIPLE one would be perfect for my 3 kids! Assuming they would all want to share a room in the future (which I doubt lol!). But such a great idea for small spaces.

So what do you think? Which bed did you like most? I love all of them! And when I showed my kids, they were practically giddy with excitement. Let's see if I can pull this off in the near future. ;p

It's almost the end of summer but the heat is still insane! Makes me want to go back to beach again one last time before school starts for the kids. Anyway, reminiscing about our outing last February in Stilts Calatagan Beach Resort. We made so many great memories during our stay there. You can read more about the resort HERE, but in the meantime, hope you enjoy these family photos. :)

Scrapbook in a Box with A Sweet Cottage

Last May 21, I attended the Scrapbook in a Box workshop by Maricel Mendoza of A Sweet Cottage.

This creative gathering was held at Spoon eat + drink in BF Paranaque. Let me just say that I am in love with this space! It's quite small but beautifully decorated. Definitely the perfect place to get our creative juices flowing. ;p

Maricel gave useful tips in photography 101 and the importance of printing photos. For this workshop, she asked all the participants to bring 20-25 travel pictures to use for our scrapbooks. To be honest, I haven't printed out any of my personal photos for years now! I'm sure most of you are the same, just keeping them in our social media accounts, computers or hard drives right?

Well, it was so hard for me to narrow down which photos to print because of course, there were so many! I ended up choosing 40 photos from our previous family trips. And when I had them printed, my kids were so excited seeing the developed photos! It just made me realize that they're so used to seeing their pictures on a phone, iPad, or computer screen only. The hard copy is such a novelty!

The great thing about Maricel's Scrapbook in a Box is that everything you need for this project is included in the kit she lovingly prepared already. There was a booklet, ribbons, pens, washi tape, and decorative labels.

Let me tell you, it was so fun and therapeutic to work on a scrapbook pala! This was my first time and I just loved arranging the photos and adding the decorations per page. I could do this all day!

One of the participants, Ria, does calligraphy and she even helped me out with my cover. Check out her Instagram @riamakes to see more of her work.

This workshop has really inspired me to preserve my memories. I mean, don't you just love looking at your family's old photos albums? It's a bit sad when I think that my kids won't have something like that in the future. And we spend so much money on our travels, so isn't it worth our time to print and document them to be treasured by the next generation?

It was really a lovely afternoon well spent. Thank you again to Maricel and to the rest of the sponsors (Printsonalities, Kieshables, Paper Blush PH, Ad Stain and Spoon). Oh, and I even won in the raffle, a pencil case from Maricel's own line, Maggie Leather Crafts. I swear, this lady does it all! :)

Anyway, I'll keep you guys updated for any future workshops from A Sweet Cottage. I think a calligraphy one might be next, and I'm definitely excited for that! :)

Summer classes at LUNA Art Workshop

I'm sure most parents will agree that summer is usually more busy and hectic than when the kids are in school. We end up taking them to different camps or workshops, plus they're always begging to be entertained when they're at home! Aside from swimming, I made sure to enroll my 6 year old daughter in art classes since I can see that she's very creative. We're from the south so I found a couple in the Alabang area, but they were quite expensive. Good thing a fellow mom recommended this place, LUNA Art Workshop, which is located in Phase 1 of BF Homes.

It was P4,000 for 8 sessions, exclusive of materials. We were given a list which we easily bought in National Bookstore for about P1k (like brushes, sketch pad, watercolor pad, etc). Since my daughter was just a beginner, she was required to use poster paint first.

Each session was 2 hours long and it was a very relaxed atmosphere. For the younger ones like my daughter, they had a teacher with them at all times helping and guiding them. For the older kids who were already using oil pastels, the teacher would make them copy a picture or an actual subject (ex. wine bottle and apple). For those already using acrylic or oil paints, they would just paint by themselves and ask for help when needed. The teacher would usually go around table per table checking the progress of each work and giving comments. There were also adults taking classes, so maybe next time I could take lessons too. ;p

Well, needless to say my daughter LOVED it and she was so excited for every class. Here's the paintings she did over the course of the summer.

They had a culminating exhibit last week and they were asked to choose one artwork to show. My daughter chose this tree painting since she said it was her favorite. I actually liked the flower ones she did, but hey, she's the artist right? We're just so proud of her! :)

Check out some of the other pieces from the exhibit. So impressive right?

So if you're from the south and are looking for an art workshop for your child (or maybe even for yourself), LUNA offers year-round classes:

FUTURE WORLD exhibit at ArtScience Museum Singapore

During our family vacation to Singapore last March, I admit that I really didn't plan any specific itinerary. The kids have already been here before and have visited Universal Studios and Sentosa. The main purpose of our trip was really to go to Legoland in Malaysia (more on that soon!).

But when we had lunch out with friends in Marina Bay Sands, they suggested we take a look at the ArtScience Museum since there was a new exhibit on display. Hubby and I have never been inside and figured why not.

We got there at around 4pm and it was a Saturday, so as expected, there was a loooong line. It took about maybe 15 minutes which wasn't so bad. So buy your tickets in advance online if you can. There was also a promo when we visited which was Buy 1 Get 1 on tickets if you like their FB page. Good thing we were able to do so to avail the discount. So tip, check their website in advance for any promotions. :)

Anyway, we had no idea what this exhibit was about at first. Apparently, Future World is the new permanent exhibition at ArtScience Museum. It is a fully immersive 1500-square-metre digital universe, where 16 spectacular art installations are brought to life and evolve in real-time through visitor presence and participation. Since Future World is a permanent exhibition, it means it is here to stay for at least the next three years. The installations will change and evolve over time to keep the exhibition fresh and relevant.

For its landmark permanent exhibition, ArtScience Museum collaborated with teamLab, an award-winning Tokyo-based art collective of "ultra-technologists" that includes artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, architects and designers. The result is Future World – Singapore’s largest interactive digital playground divided into four areas - Nature, Town, Park and Space.

NATURE

The first area we walked into was a room filled with digital flowers which was breathtaking! Everything is constantly moving, so you have to find a good position for a nice photo. We spent quite a lot of time here, and we had to remind ourselves that there was still more to see! Anyway, I also read that the installation evolves throughout the year with the four different seasons, so no two visits will ever be the same.

The next area was called the "100 Years Sea Animation Diorama" where people were just sitting down watching an installation fim on large screens. The film is about the long-term environmental effects of climate change and hopes to educate younger generations about its impact.

TOWN

To get to the next area, you can take a slide down here! This was one of my kids' favorite parts and they were so sweaty already from going up and down and up and down! I even gave it a try and it was so fun! Best to wear pants since the slide could be quite painful to bare thighs.

This part was called "Sketch Town" and it was an interactive digital installation depicting a fictitious town based on Singapore.

What was cool about it is that they had special paper where you can create your own town landmarks by colouring in drawings of buildings, cars, planes, spaceships and UFOs.

After, you place your two-dimensional pictures on this special scanner right here...

Then be surprised as they are brought to life and enter Sketch Town, transforming into 3D animated objects before your eyes! I swear, it was just so cool finding and seeing your drawing up there on the big screen.

In this area called "Connecting! Train Block" you can get a chance to design your own transportation network. The installation begins by projecting moving cars, trains, planes and boats onto a large surface. You'll use physical wooden blocks to design and connect an evolving system of roads, rivers and railways to keep the ever-increasing traffic flowing smoothly.

This area called the "Media Block Chair" was also so fun! You can create playful and vibrant structures from stacking blocks that glow and change colour when you connect them together.

Here, you place your hand or an object on "A Table Where Little People Live" and the little people will notice and jump onto it. The actions of the tiny characters change in response to the shape and colour of the objects, becoming more animated as you introduce more and more objects into their world.

PARK

The next area is a space inspired by nature and recreational play. Here there was another interactive digital installation like Sketch Town, but this time it was an Aquarium. You get to create drawings of sea creatures and watch them come to life and swim around with each other in a virtual ocean.

This is a seven-metre tall virtual waterfall called the "Universe of Water Particles" and it looked so realistic! I love the silhouette it created when you stand in front of it.

My kids also enjoyed this area called "Create! Hopscotch for Geniuses" where you can design your own customised hopscotch game. There were some older kids who were making the pattern too hard though and then laughing at the kids who couldn't get it. Haaay kainis! My son even got upset at one point, but then he stood up for his sister by telling them to not laugh at her! I was so proud! :)

This installation called "Light Ball Orchestra" was one of my personal favorites. Here, kids can push, bounce, and roll beachball-sized globes to change their colour and sound. It was just so visually stunning. I wanted to get in too! ;p

There was another digitally projected screen called "Story of the Time When Gods Were Everywhere". Here, you can create your own environment by touching hieroglyphic characters and watch them transform into natural elements such as wind, rain, trees and mountains.

SPACE

The last area was called the "Crystal Universe" and basically you will walk through this maze of LED lights, giving the illusion of stars moving in space. It was a bit hard to take nice pictures since you had to quickly move along because there was a line. But the lights and sounds were still cool.

All in all, this ended up being one of our favorite things that we did in Singapore! I love how interactive everything was and enouraged the kids to touch, feel, and be as creative as can be. If I knew that it was going to be like this, I would have definitely alotted more time here (we had about 2 hours since it closes at 7pm). I mean, even the gift shop had coloring materials and an area for drawing! We went here to go to the bathroom before exiting, and it was so hard to drag the kids away since they wanted to stay.

If you're going to Singapore anytime soon, I really recommend visiting this exhibit. And it's not just for kids, even adults will have a blast too!

Children's Festival 2016 at Gardens by the Bay Singapore

Singapore is definitely one of my favorite family destinations. The city is safe and clean, transportation system is efficient, and there are just so many attractions and activities for kids! One such event we were fortunate enough to go to during our vacation last March was the Children's Fest in Gardens by the Bay.

I was just googling "kid-friendly activities in Singapore" that morning, then I happened to chance upon this festival online. Mind you, this was on March 20, so it was pure luck that we caught this event on its LAST day!

The event was in the Supertree Grove area so we did quite a bit of walking from Marina Bay Sands. It was HOT, but the lovely surroundings made up for it. ;p

Finally, we got there, and we were greeted by different craft and game booths. The kids had so much fun doing all the activities like fridge magnet designing, hand puppet making, and playing with kinetic sand, all for FREE!

There was even a huge bouncy castle, which they had a blast on!

Hubby took this time to go up the OCBC Skyway ($8 admission), where you can see panoramic vistas of the Gardens and Marina Bay skyline. I am super scared of heights so I was glad to let him do this by himself hehe. His pictures looked awesome though! But my palms were getting sweaty just looking at them haha! :)

can you spot us? ;p

But our favorite part of the day was this game booth called the "Human Claw Machine" where the kids are put in a harness, lifted into a huge box filled with toys, and then they grab their own prize! I thought the kids were going to be scared but they were so game! What a fun and memorable experince for them. : )

It was such an awesome afternoon for the whole family! So if ever you're in Singapore, always make it point to check the events at Gardens by the Bay since they always have something fun for kids. :)

LEGOLAND MALAYSIA RESORT (part 1): Getting there from Singapore

For our summer vacation last March, I figured it would be a great time to visit Legoland in Malaysia since the kids were old enough to appreciate it. I showed them photos of the hotel and the theme park and they were so giddy with excitement!

We flew to Singapore and spent a few days there first before going to Legoland. It's actually easier to go to Legoland from Singapore rather than Kuala Lumpur since Legoland is located in the southern most region of Malaysia in Johor Bahru. From Singapore, Legoland is just less than an hour away. But from Kuala Lumpur, it will take you about 4.5 hours!

For our bus tickets, I booked them online via this website: busonlineticket.com. There are different departure times and pickup/dropoff points. I chose the one that leaves at 9:00am from Lavender MRT since it was closest to us. But if you want to get there earlier, there's one that leaves at 8:30am from the Singapore Flyer.

The meeting place in Lavender MRT was in front of McDonald's. There are also other restaurants around so you can eat breakfast while waiting. We got there at 8:30am since it was advised to be there at least 30 minutes in advance. At first we were getting a bit nervous since we didn't see any bus and there seemed to be no one else going to Legoland. We even tried looking for the bus company's booth around the MRT station but there was none. Good thing there are friendly Pinoys everywhere! We asked some ladies working at McDo and they told us not to worry, we were at the right spot, and to just wait.

After a while, we saw other people with luggages too. And then more Pinoys also going to Legoland lol! Finally when it was near 9:00am, a bus representative came asking for our names and to give us our stickers. Then, we had to walk to the back where the bus was parked.

Anyway, the bus was very spacious and comfortable. Since I bought tickets early, I was able to choose seats in the front row.

We were given a lot of reminders especially for the stopover at the Malaysian check point (customs and immigration). Basically to just stay with the group and to make sure to exit properly to find where the bus was. And if you encounter any problem which will be the cause of delay (like bringing in prohibited items for example), the bus will have to leave without you (yikes!). We went down 2 times. The first, just our passports without our luggages. Then after, we had to bring down all our stuff na. Both were very quick since there were no lines (maybe because it was a weekday).

The  best part about sitting in the front row - you're the first to get off, which means you're also the first to get back from the check points ;p

Anyway, we finally arrived in Legoland at around 11am. Legoland is open everyday from 10am until 6pm, but longer hours apply on weekends, during school and public holidays. So check their website beforehand for operating hours.

For our return trip, I chose the same dropoff point at the Lavender MRT station which leaves at 5:30pm. Take note that there are later return trips though, if you want to maximize your stay at the park.

Anyway, you're advised to be at the meeting point 30 minutes beforehand. Since everyone was already in the bus by 5:00pm, the driver was able to leave ahead of schedule! And this time, we had a double-decker bus with reclining seats. We chose to stay in the lower level and we had the whole area to ourselves which was so comfortable! :)

However, the check point going back to Singapore took so long! There weren't that many people naman, but the line was just so slow moving. I don't know, maybe the immigration officers were being extra thorough. We were lined up for about an hour and the kids were getting so impatient already since they were tired and sleepy. But anyway, we were the first ones back in the bus again so we were able to have time to rest before getting back to Singapore. Then from Lavender MRT, we just took a cab back to our place.

So as you can see, going to Legoland from Singapore is actually very easy. The only unavoidable problems you can encounter are traffic and long lines at the border. That's why try going on a weekday as much as possible.

Anyway, next up - our stay at the LEGOLAND HOTEL!

LEGOLAND MALAYSIA RESORT (part 2): Our stay at Legoland Hotel

Since I wanted to maximize our trip to Legoland, we booked a 2 night stay at the Legoland Hotel with access to both the theme park and the water park. Check the their website since they usually have different promos. We also went on a weekday (Monday - Wednesday) to avoid the crowds.

Here's the breakdown of our package for 2 adults and 2 kids:
2 nights Standard Room (with breakfast): MYR 2,150
2-day combo ticket valid to access Theme Park and Water Park: MYR 810
TOTAL: MYR 2,960

From Singapore, we finally arrived in Legoland at around 11am. We went to the hotel first to leave our bags since check-in was at 4pm pa. Our original plan was to go around the theme park on the first day (while waiting for check-in) and on third day (after check-out), so we could maximize our hotel stay on the 2nd day. But we had to use our 2-day pass consecutively pala. So we decided to just stay in the hotel on the first day instead. So many fun things to do just in the lobby pa lang!

pirate ship play area
so many Lego bricks to play with
castle playground with more Lego bricks
The wall at the reception area has over 12,000 Lego minifigurines! And check out the bike's wheels which are like magnifying glasses - it zooms in on the figures as it passes by!

kids had a blast making their own Lego swords

Right across from Legoland (as in right in front) was a small shopping and eating complex with a KFC and Burger King. We had lunch here while waiting for check-in. For our succeeding meals, we just did take out and ate in our hotel room.

When we came back to the hotel, we were informed that we could finally go to our rooms earlier at 2pm. Now check out the fun elevators - all have disco balls with lights and music when you enter! We couldn't help but dance every time!

Anyway, the hotel has 3 different themed rooms - Pirate, Adventure, and Kingdom. I made my kids choose and they wanted the Adventure one (although I read that the Pirate one was the most popular). All the rooms come with a bunk bed (that even has a pull-out underneath) which was what my kids were most excited about! I love that they have a separate sleeping area with their own TV too! And there's a sliding door if the parents want some privacy hehe ;p

This was a Standard Room which also has a king sized bed and can sleep up to 5 persons (maximum 3 adults per room). I believe the only difference from the Premium Themed rooms are just extra theming and Lego features. As you can see, it was very spacious for just the 4 of us!

Another fun thing for the kids was the treasure chest inside the room. They had to look for clues to answer the questions which will unlock the safe!

here's their prizes - a sword and a shield which we got to take home!
the hotel also provided a box of Duplo blocks to play with
The bathroom was a decent size. Wish there was a bathtub though.
And yes, there are 2 sinks! The one on the right is kiddie sized!

We went swimming too later that afternoon. There was an adult pool and a kiddie pool. I loved that there was a canopy above the pool to protect us from the sun and rain. And there were also big Lego floating bricks to play with!

The hotel also has daily contests and activities.

We decided to join the daily Lego building contest and that month's theme was a Castle. Hubby and I sort of had a mini challenge to see who would win... I entered for our daughter and he entered for our son.

showing off our creations

And guess who won? I DID!!! I guess they found my rainbow house super cute haha! They gave Miley a certificate and some Lego stuff.

Breakfast buffet was at the Bricks Resturant. There were a lot of choices but it was just okay for me. But the place was super cute though!

Still more play areas in the hotel. This was right outside Bricks Restaurant. Honestly, just staying in the hotel is already fun enough for the kids! It was kinda hard dragging them to the theme park since they were so happy and contented here already (plus it was so HOT outside!). Actually, they kept asking to go back to the hotel every time we went out!

They had such an amazing experience, even now they keep bugging me that they want to come back to stay at the hotel! They even said they liked it better than Disneyland! Personally, I find it super worth it and wouldn't hesitate to book here again. :)

Anyway, I'll be posting about the theme park and the water park next!

Starting big school... and learning to let go

It's the first week of school for many students, but for most parents like me, it's also the start of BIG SCHOOL or Grade 1. I just want to share my thoughts and feelings while they're still fresh since I'm sure in a few weeks or even months, I'll be laughing at how dramatic I was!

This was her first day of PRESCHOOL, 3 years ago.

Well, time really does go by so fast. For parents of newborns or babies, the days and nights might seem long now... but treasure every moment, it will go by in a blur. I still remember being pregnant for the first time with my daughter Miley. Hubby and I would think about the future and one thing we'd talk about was where she would go to school. I went to an all girls school while hubby went to a co-ed one so we would always debate about this. Anyway, hubby would always say "ang tagal pa nun!" (that's still years from now!). But look where the time went. 6 years flew by and now our daughter is in Grade 1.

graduating from preschool

I remember posting about finding the right preschool for our daughter a few years back. It was quite a decision then but nothing compared to choosing big school. Maybe for some the choice is easy, a no-brainer even. But hubby and I had a hard time. Of course, I'd always dreamed of my daughter going to my alma mater, an all girls school. But since we have 2 younger boys, going to a co-ed school would be more practical so they could all be together na lang.

My old school is also quite far from where we live now. And traffic is so bad these days I don't think it would be practical to travel for hours each day just to get to school. Super aga ng gising, then late pa makakauwi. Kawawa naman un kid diba?

Then there's the tuition. There are a number of good schools in our part of town. My hubby's alma mater is of course our top choice but we also looked into other schools which were much more affordable. I mean, we would be sending all 3 kids to this school after all in the near future.

We narrowed it down to three schools where she took entrance exams. We wanted to see first where she passes just in case, but thank goodness she was accepted to all of them.

After much deliberation, we finally came to a decision after weighing all the pros and cons, asking family and friends, praying about it, and ultimately going with our hearts. So in the end, we enrolled her in her daddy's school. It's co-ed which scares me a little (omg baka magka-BF kaagad?!!!). But at least her brothers will be going here too in the coming years so they can keep an eye on her.

Let me just say I was an emotional wreck the days leading up to her first day. I had knots in my stomach and I couldn't sleep well. Parang ako un papasok e lol! I would even get more stressed when I would ask her if she was excited and she would say "I'm nervous mommy" (hubby said she could probably sense my anxiety too hehe).

I was so OC in preparing her things, putting plastic cover on her books and notebooks, printing sticker labels, double checking her bag and lunchbox. She's also a very picky eater so I was worried how she would adjust to eating lunch in school.

buying her school supplies

To further add to my anxiety was that she would be taking the bus to school. I'm driving her little brother to preschool pa kasi this year. But good thing we have friends from the village also on the same bus service, which made me feel more at ease. But some of my thoughts were: how will she go to her classroom from the bus (and vice versa)... baka makatulog siya on the bus... baka may bullies! Haaay!

Since this was going to be her very first time to ride the bus, I accompanied her on the first day. And of course, I kept taking pictures to document everything. Pretty soon she was getting annoyed with me already since she wanted to go na to her classroom ("Mom, I'm going to be late!").

her very first bus ride to school

I brought her to her classroom and saw a lot of excited and nervous parents there too. We were all just hovering near the door until the teacher politely asked us to leave haha! Well, I waited for her in school so I could ride back with her on the bus. I was so excited to see her during dismissal, and hearing her say she had fun and she liked big school after all! What a relief!

our baby girl, all grown up!

Well, she now rides the bus by herself and she said she likes it! Good thing her friend from the village is also Grade 1 so they always sit together. I'm worried about the bullies or maybe the older kids saying bad words or something, but when I asked her, she said the kids were quiet (probably sleepy pa silang lahat lol). Oh, and she actually ate her baon in school! Well, just the rice kasi nga she only eats a particular brand of chicken lol! But baby steps!

To be honest, I still have so many fears and worries. I keep asking my husband to reassure me that she'll be ok. I also saw a lot of parents on my social feed posting about their separation anxiety so I'm glad I'm not alone. Pero ang sakit sa puso talaga, promise!

It was so timely the other day though, they were showing Finding Nemo in Disney Channel. And in the beginning of the film, it was also Nemo's first day in school. And if you remember, his dad Marlin was being so scared and overprotective. And I could super relate!!!

yep, that's me!

But sooner or later, us parents really have to learn to let go. And let our kids experience the real world on their own. It's hard, but it's for their own good. But really, why do they have to grow up so fast? :(

I honestly don't know if I'll still be this way when my son starts Grade 1 next year. Hopefully I'll be a lot better na. But I think it'll be a different story when my youngest starts school. I can already feel the waterworks coming haha! ;p

Thermos Food Jars & Water Bottles

My daughter is now in Grade 1 and her longer class schedule means she now has recess and lunch break in school. Therefore, I wanted to find a good food container that can keep her baon hot and a water bottle that can keep her water cold for hours.

I actually searched online for recommendations and came across this article which introduced me to the Thermos FUNtainer Food Jar. I saw a lot of good reviews for this product and was able to ask hubby to buy for me when he went on a work trip in Canada.

so many cute choices... and affordable too!

Here are the features of the FUNtainer Food Jar:
- Capacity: 10 oz
- Dimensions: 3.5" W x 3.5" D x 4.5" H
- Double wall vacuum insulation for maximum temperature retention, hot or cold
- Durable stainless steel interior and exterior
- Extra wide mouth is easy to fill, serve from and clean
- BPA-Free
- Dishwasher safe (although we hand wash)

I personally love that they have such cute designs to choose from. They have plain colors like blue and pink, and also character ones like Disney Princess, My Little Pony, Mickey Mouse, Cars, SpiderMan, and many more. There was only Hello Kitty in the store though, but you can check online in the Thermos website or Amazon for the other styles.

The size is perfect for my daughter since she doesn't eat so much yet. But when she gets older, I think I'll get another one so I can separate the rice from the food.

According to the label, the jar keeps food hot for 5 hours (or cold for 7 hours). I tested it by putting freshly cooked rice in the jar for 5 hours. When I ate the rice, it was just the right temperature, and definitely not cold. So thumbs up!

I also read reviews that to keep the food hot longer, you have to properly preheat the jar. How? By adding hot water first, screwing the lid on and letting it sit for a few minutes. After, pour the hot water out, quickly dry, then add the food.

I also bought the bigger sized food jar for my son since he eats a whole lot more. The blue one has a 16 oz capacity compared to the 10 oz FUNtainer.

It also comes with a foldable spoon which is found when you open the top lid.

We haven't tested it yet, but the label says it keeps food hot for 7 hours (and cold for 9 hours) which is longer than the FUNtainer.

Having the spoon in the container is convenient, but the spoon is kinda hard to unfold! I had my 5 year old son try it and he kept pulling in the wrong direction at first. Although he finds the spoon "super cool", I think I'll have him bring a different one in the meantime. :)

The FUNtainer food jars also have matching water bottles if you want to get a set. We've actually been using these water bottles for a few months now (the Disney Princess and TMNT were given as a gift) and I didn't realize they were the same brand!

Here are the features:
- Capacity: 12 oz
- Dimensions: 2.6" W x 2.6" D x 7.0" H
- Double wall vacuum insulation for maximum cold temperature retention
- Hygienic push button lid with pop-up silicone straw is easy to open
- Kid-proof design - durable stainless steel interior and exterior withstands daily wear and tear
- Dishwasher safe
- Exterior stays condensation free
- Non-slip, scratch resistant base

I absolutely love these water bottles which have been tried and tested by my kids! It's really very easy to open, even my 2 year old has no problem with the push button. I've also popped these in my bag countless times and have had no experiences with leaks as well as condensation!

To keep the water cold longer, we put these in the fridge for a few hours before we have to leave the house. And it really stays cold for hours!

These bottles have gone through countless "accidents" as well and they still look brand new. The top and bottom rubber parts help absorb shock when it is dropped and prevent dents to the exterior.

I also got a bigger water bottle (18 oz) since my daughter now stays longer in school. But what initially caught my attention was this bottle's gorgeous floral design! I wanted to keep it for myself lol! ;p

this one has a rear push button, and the same type of silicone straw

I also happen to have an insulated lunch box which we got a few years ago, also from Thermos. I realized that we've been using their products for years now and they've really held up and delivered.

There are other good brands in the market as well, but so far, Thermos really works well for us. Anyway, hope this helps other parents looking for lunch supplies for their kids. I'm not sure if these are available locally, but you can definitely order online from Amazon. :)

Product Review: Ariel Power Gel Concentrated Gel Detergent

To be honest, I don’t do the laundry myself at home since I am very fortunate to have household help. I do however buy the groceries and I’m sure most of us are used to buying laundry powder for our clothes. So when I received the new Ariel Power Gel Concentrated Gel Detergent, I was very eager to let my yaya try it out and see the results.

LEGOLAND MALAYSIA RESORT (part 3): Theme Park & Water Park

Finally, here's the continuation of my Legoland travel posts which is all about the Theme Park and Water Park. If you want to read about how we got here from Singapore, click HERE. For our stay at the Legoland Hotel, click HERE.

Anyway, so many people have been asking me if a day trip to Legoland Malaysia from Singapore is worth it. Personally, I think it depends also on some factors like traffic, how long the lines are at the border, and weather. If everything works in your favor, a day trip can be very enjoyable. That's why if possible, try to schedule your trip on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

It's also important to note that they may close the parks in case of strong rains and thunderstorms. This is found in the FAQ of their website:
Due to Malaysia's tropical climate, thunderstorms occur regularly. In the event of lightning within close proximity to the park, outdoor attractions will be closed for the safety of all guests. Because these storms generally occur in the late afternoon or early evening, we recommend you plan to use this time for souvenir shopping, having an early dinner, or enjoying any of our indoor attractions.

But back to the day trip, it is possible to do both the theme park and the water park in 1 day but you will be rushed. From Singapore, you'll probably get to Legoland around 10:30-11am. Then of course you'll have lunch first, which leaves you about 5-6 hours to explore the park before the bus departs for the return trip. Actually, that's plenty of time already since we were able to go around the whole park and do majority of the rides in about 2 hours because there were hardly any lines.

Personally, I really wanted to maximize our experience that's why we decided to stay for 2 nights at the Legoland Hotel. As an added bonus, we were able to get the Buy 1 Get 1 promo for a 2-Day Combo Ticket (meaning you can enter both the Theme Park and the Water Park on the same day). You also get early access to the theme park at 9:30am (regular opening is at 10am).

This was a great advantage since we practically had the whole park to ourselves, especially since people from the day trip usually arrive at around 11am. We were able to do most of the rides during this time.

Hi Emmet!

We were lucky to be the only ones in some rides, so the operator would ask us if we wanted another turn right after without having to line up again. Of course we did! ;p

we did this ride twice
they did this ride about 3 times

Ok, one mistake we did was to go on the Dino Island water ride (kind of like Log Jam in Enchanted Kingdom) early on. We didn't expect we would get SOAKED! There were body dryers for RM10 but it really didn't do much lol! Good thing I brought extra clothes for the kids, but none for me and hubby! So if you're just doing a day trip and plan on doing the water rides, bring extra clothes!

This was the Observation Tower which climbs slowly upwards and fully rotates, which allowed us to see the entire park and its surrounding areas.

I was really happy my kids' height already allowed them to do all the rides. My son rode all the roller coasters with his dad!

There were also lots of play areas for the kids. So if they're too young for some of the rides, they can still enjoy.

And I think Star Wars fans would go nuts over this Miniland Lego exhibit! The attention to detail is amazing! The displays also feature sounds, actions and lighting effects to further enhance the experience.

Of course, they had to check out the souvenir shop afterwards and do a little shopping. We loved the cute little shopping carts they had!

Another advantage of staying at the hotel is we were able to rest in our room when it got too hot outside. And the hotel is right next door the park, just a few steps away which was so convenient. Not like in HK Disneyland where you have to take a shuttle pa. When it got too hot around lunch time, we went back to the hotel to eat and rest.

you can see the hotel right outside the park

We decided to go to the water park that same afternoon. I don't have a lot of pics here since we ended up depositing all our stuff at the lockers. But the water park was so fun!!! There was a wave pool and a lazy river. There were also so many water slides, some which you can do as a group on a big floater! I was too chicken to do some of them, but hubby tried them all! We just had a blast here. :)

For our last day, we went back to the theme park after we checked out of the hotel. We decided to just catch the shows in the air-conditioned areas since it was really quite hot. We saw the Ninjago & the Realm of Shadows live action show and the 4D Lego Movie: A New Adventure.

We also checked out MINILAND, which features some of Asia's best known landmarks made entirely out of Lego bricks. The one from the Philippines showcases Bolinao, a thriving fishing town on the Coast of Luzon Island.

Anyway, I also appreciated that there were lots of play areas everywhere including the restaurants. Here, the kids can play with Legos while you eat.

I'm really thankful that we had good weather during our visit. It rained on the first day but we were just inside the hotel, and drizzled a little on our 2nd day, but that was it. Just remember to bring an umbrella because even if there's no rain, it will definitely be HOT! Even hotter than in Singapore. If you have babies and older companions, don't worry since there are activities and shows in air-conditioned areas to enjoy.

I've read some reviews from people who said they didn't enjoy Legoland very much. Personally, we loved it because I think the park was perfect for my kids' age (6 and 5). I feel like most of the shows and rides are geared towards younger kids and the roller coasters aren't too daring for thrillseekers. The water park might be more enjoyable for the older ones because of all the slides though. And I guess, if you aren't really a fan of Lego, then you wouldn't really appreciate it very much.

But if you ask me, we enjoyed our whole experience and would definitely come back here again. We had so much fun at the water park that I would recommend definitely including this when you visit. Sayang kasi e! But of course, if you're pressed for time, the theme park should provide plenty of entertainment already. Everything was really so AWESOME! ;p
