Sea World in Gold Coast, Australia

When I saw that there was a Sea World in Gold Coast, it was definitely on the top of my list for the theme parks I wanted to visit in Australia. I love seeing marine life and I got even more excited when I saw that this Sea World had a Nickeolodeon Land which my kids would surely enjoy.

Sea World is a marine mammal park, oceanarium, and theme park and includes rides, animal exhibits and other attractions. It promotes conservation through education and the rescue and rehabilitation of sick, injured or orphaned wildlife.

The kids loved getting up close and personal with a lot of animals like dolphins, sting rays, penguins, and even sharks.

They loved the interactive pool where you could touch starfish and sea cucumbers.

We enjoyed exploring the world’s largest man-made lagoon system for sharks where you could also see lots of tropical fish, sting rays and other bottom-dwellers.

There's an underwater viewing area where you can see the different fish and sharks glide past the huge glass windows.

Sea World is also home to the smallest penguins in the world called the Fairy penguins. We were able to catch them during feeding time.

There were also a lot of shows throughout the day and we definitely made sure not to miss the dolphin presentation.

Of course, we were super excited about Sea World’s amazing new family attraction - Nickelodeon Land!

The Nickelodeon-themed area includes kid-sized rides, Sea World’s first ever mini rollercoaster, new shows and character appearances by Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

It was so funny because my kids, especially my 7 year old daughter, didn't want to watch the Dora show anymore because it was too "babyish" already! I had to remind her how addicted she was to the show before and how she and her brother even dressed up as Dora and Boots for Halloween! ;p

They enjoyed the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Live show though, which featured the turtles dancing and helping April fight the bad guys.

The kiddie rollercoaster, SpongeBob's Boating School Blast, was so fun!!!

Hubby had to convince me and the kids to try out the Storm Coaster though. It was a coaster and water ride in one so you'll definitely get wet since there's a huge splash at the end.

We did try it but just once since it was really scary for us lol! The little boy was definitely not happy after haha! But hey, you gotta try everything at least once right? ;p

This pic deserves a close-up hahaha! Check out how terrified me and the kids were during the drop!!! Damn you hubby! hahaha! ;p

Another coaster was the Jet Rescue where you ride your very own Jetski, but the kids didn't meet the height requirement. Hubby rode it and said it was really super fast!

There was also an interactive adventure playground called Castaway Bay. Armed with over eighty water cannons, the Battle Boats ride will take you on a splashtacular adventure where you can expect to get wet while having tonnes of family fun.

The Sky Fortress has five exciting levels where you can climb, crawl and clamber your way through rope bridges, tunnels, slides and much, much more.

There were definitely a lot of things to see and do at Sea World. We went on a weekday so there weren't a lot of people and hardly any lines. We had a great time and learned a lot about conserving and taking care of the ocean and marine life. Definitely a must visit when in the Gold Coast!

7 Things To Do in Brisbane, Australia

$

Our flight in and out of Australia was through Brisbane. However based on research and recommendations, there seemed to be more family friendly activies in Gold Coast which was just an hour's drive away. Gold Coast is home to a lot of theme parks and we actually went to Movie World and Sea World during our stay there.

There are still a lot of things to see and do in Brisbane though. Brisbane is actually a very modern, vibrant city and what I really appreciated was how nice and friendly the people were. From the Uber drivers who kept offering us candy and water, to random people on the street who would insist to take our family photos. :)

Anyway, here are 7 fun things you can do in Brisbane, Australia:

1. Ride the FREE CityHopper Ferry

I always check for any free activities or tours whenever I visit a new country. And Brisbane offers a free ferry service, the CityHopper, which makes exploring the city so much easier.

The CityHopper service runs every 30 minutes between 6am and midnight daily. It travels along the Brisbane River, stopping at North Quay, South Bank 3, Maritime Museum, Thornton Street, Eagle Street Pier, Holman Street, Dockside and Sydney Street terminals.

All you need to do is hop on and hop off as many times as you'd like and enjoy taking in the Brisbane River and city sights. You can visit TransLink's website to plan your journey and for an updated timetable.

We rode the ferry from South Bank 3 at around 5pm and it was already starting to get dark. The ferry has 2 levels and we sat on the top part which was open air. It was very cold but seeing the city at night with all the pretty lights was worth it. The kids enjoyed it so much they didn't want to get off! ;p

2. Walk through South Bank

South Bank is Brisbane’s premier lifestyle and cultural destination. Located on the southern banks of the Brisbane River, it includes 17 hectares of parklands, restaurants, cafes, bars, boutiques, museums and galleries. Lots of free activities for families and kids too like playgrounds and swimming areas.

3. Go swimming at Streets Beach

A beach in the middle of the city! Located in South Banks Parklands, this man-made beach boasts a sparkling lagoon surrounded by white, sandy beaches and sub-tropical plants. It is free to use and is patrolled by lifeguards all year round.

4. Have a photo in the Brisbane sign

The giant Brisbane sign is a popular tourist attraction located in South Bank (near the Wheel of Brisbane).

We even saw a lot of people playing and climbing on top of the letters! This is definitely the perfect spot to have a souvenir photo of your trip to Brisbane.

5. Visit the City Hall and Museum of Brisbane

The Museum of Brisbane is located on Level 3 of Brisbane City Hall. The museum explores contemporary and historic Brisbane, Australia, and its people through a program of art and social history exhibitions, workshops, talks, tours and children's activities. And the best part, entry to the museum is free!

6. Go shopping at Queens Street Mall

The Queen Street Mall is a vibrant shopping and lifestyle area that lies at the heart of Brisbane City and is Australia's most popular pedestrian mall. There's tons of shopping options ranging from high end to department stores like Target, Coles, Cotton On, Forever 21 and more. Plus, lots of different food options.

7. Hug a koala and feed some kangaroos

This was definitely on the top of my bucket list for this trip since I wasn't able to do this when I visited Sydney before. You can either go to the Australia Zoo or Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary for this unforgettable experience.

We really had a great time in Brisbane! Only complaint if any is that mostly everything here closes so early (like on average around 5-6pm) but I think that's standard in Australia. It's still a wonderful place for families and I love how there's a lot of free activities and attractions for everyone to enjoy. :)

I first put up these photo frames back in 2012 when we only had two kids. I've been meaning to change and add photos ever since we had Skyler and finally I've gotten around to doing it.

Here was one side of the wall before:

And here it is after! I added 3 more frames on the left side and also painted the brown frame on the upper right white.

Here is the other side of the wall before:

And here it is after! Again, I painted the brown frame on the upper left white. I also did more rearranging here by changing the position of some of the old frames.

I'm so relieved it's done since it took me FOREVER to decide which pics to print. I mean, that's the problem with having a lot of photoshoots and having so much to choose from lol ;p Plus, it also took me a long time to figure out the new layout of the frames, since I'm so OC and wanted it to look just right. I'm just happy seeing all the photos up since it brings back so many memories especially when my kids were just babies! Anyway, I'm keeping this layout for a few years and update it again when the kids are older. :)

Another school year, another kid enters big school

I can't believe summer is officially over for us and it's now the start of another year in the big school. My son is entering Grade 1 while my daughter is now in Grade 2.

I still remember last year when my daughter entered big school. I was so nervous and stressed about it, just like any parent I'm sure. You can read all about it HERE, but basically I couldn't even sleep thinking about how she was going to find her classroom, what if she needed to go to the bathroom, dealing with bullies, and so on! It's like they've been so sheltered in preschool and now they're finally entering the real world lol! I went with her to school the first two days and it was so hard letting go! I really felt like crying after I brought her to her classroom!

I remember saying in my post how dramatic I was and hopefully I would be better the following year when it was my son's turn. Well, I guess it's true since all the anxious feelings were gone!

I guess it's because I already know what to expect. It also helps that my son is already familiar with the campus having gone with me to pick up his sister several times, plus attending school events. And having my daughter there to look out for her younger brother is very comforting. Although with their personalities, it just might be the other way around. You see my son is more of an extrovert and very outgoing. He has no trouble making new friends and speaking his mind, unlike my daughter who tends to be more shy.

Well, my son still insisted I also go with him the first two days of school just like I did with his Ate. And after trying to take a lot of pics when we got there, he got annoyed with me (just like his sister!) since he wanted to go to his classroom already! Haaaay they really grow up so fast :(

Anyway, now I have 2 kids to help with homework and review for exams! That's what I'm starting to get stressed about more lol! Oh, and did I mention I now have double the books and notebooks to label and cover with plastic? The joys of being a mom!

Well, think I'll be dramatic again when my youngest finally goes to big school since he's our baby! But thankfully that's a few years from now pa. :)

A day at Sta. Elena Fun Farm

One of my daughter's BFFs celebrated her birthday at Sta. Elena Fun Farm last month and I was really excited about it since I've never been here before! My daughter's field trip was actually held here 3 years ago but I had just given birth to my youngest that time, so it was hubby who accompanied her. They had such a great time and the pictures looked awesome, but we somehow never got around to planning a visit. So now, finally, we were able to go as a family (and for free lol!) ;p

The place is very easy to get to (we just used Waze for directions) since it's just an hour away from Manila. We didn't need to pay for anything since we were there as guests for the party, but I believe entrance fee is P300 per head (2 years old below is free). This is already inclusive of all the activities and amenities inside the venue.

This is the covered area where the party was held. It was all very simple with the hosts just serving food from McDonald's which the kids enjoyed. After eating, it was up to everyone to do their own thing.

The kids headed first to the animal feeding area with lots of cute rabbits and guinea pigs.

There was also a pond with lots of ducks and a small rowing boat. If you're feeling more adventurous (maybe next time for me ;p) you can also try to cross the pond on a rope. Just make sure you have extra clothes in case you fall in!

A big hit with the kids was fishing, even if they were all scared and disgusted with the worm bait. Luckily, someone will hook it up for you.

I wasn't even sure there were any fish, but then my two boys caught one each! The fish were really small though and they were thrown back in the water soon after.

There was also a sand house with a rope ladder, swings, and kiddie play stuff.

There were other activities too like a rope course, obstacle course, horseback riding (the mini pony was so cute!), and carabao pulled-cart riding which the whole family enjoyed.

Probably the most exciting activity though was the zip-line. I was so proud of all of my kids for doing it, especially my 3 year old boy!

Needless to say, we had a fantastic time! I love how this place is just a quick escape from the city, where kids can experience being close to animals and nature. The kids had so much fun just running around and exploring, which is a nice change from them tinkering with their iPads and watching TV.

Just some quick tips, you apparently need a reservation to come here so call or check out the contact details listed below when planning a visit.

Bring your own food and drinks since there's no restaurant inside.

Wear comfortable clothes and rubber shoes especially if you plan on doing the activities.

Bring change of clothes, sunscreen, a cap, mosquito repellant, and an umbrella. You can also bring swimsuits during the rainy season so the kids can play even in the rain.

There are bathrooms and also an outdoor shower, so you can also bring a towel and some toiletries if you want to give your kids a quick bath before heading home. I wish I'd known this since my kids were all so sweaty and dusty from running around and playing in the sand house!

Anyway, we really enjoyed our visit and we're definitely looking forward to coming back soon. :)

Gold Coast: Surfer's Paradise & The Island Hotel

I feel so blessed to have been able to travel to different cities in Australia this summer. I've already been to Sydney a few years before, and last month we were able to visit Brisbane and Gold Coast. We also just arrived from Cairns last week, so it was definitely an adventure filled summer for us.

I'd have to say though that out of all the places we visited, the kids loved Gold Coast the most. The Gold Coast is renowned for its white sand beaches as well as its famous theme parks, like Movie World and Sea World which we were able to visit.

From Brisbane, Gold Coast is just an hour away. We just took an Uber since we were with the kids plus we had luggage as well. It's very expensive though, one way will set you back about $100 AUS. You can choose to take the train, but we didn't want to deal with multiple transfers and having to take the bus and walk to get to our final destination. Travel time will also be much longer. Some people also choose to rent a car, but it's right-hand drive in Australia so hubby was a bit anxious to try.

Anyway, in choosing which area to book our hotel, I knew I wanted to be right where the action was which was definitely Surfers Paradise.

There are so many nice hotels in the area, but I chose one walking distance to the beach and Cavill Avenue, which is a popular street and pedestrian mall in Surfers Paradise.

Cavill Ave.

I ended up booking The Island Hotel which is situated in the heart of Surfers Paradise. I was able to get a good deal direct through their website.

pool and rooftop bar

I really liked how they had 2 queen beds and free wi-fi (some hotels charge extra for this). They also just finished renovating so everything was new.

love the tiles in the bathroom
balcony
balcony view at night

Location wise, this place was perfect. From our balcony, you can see how close we were to the beach just down the road.

The beach itself was amazing. The sand was white and powdery soft so the kids loved running around (especially after birds). I also loved how clear and blue the sky was! Water was just really cold though, so we didn't swim. And I was afraid of sharks lol, but our Uber driver said it was safe since they put nets in the water.

Cavill Avenue and Cavill Mall were also just a short walk away. Most establishments in Australia close pretty early (like 5pm to 6pm) so it was nice that this place was still very much alive at night lined with shops, bars, and lots of restaurants.

There's a McDonald's and KFC nearby for the kids, but no rice huhu! Of course, we had to eat at Hurricane's which is famous for their ribs!

Another good resto is Guzman Y Gomez, which serves Mexican food.

We also checked out Pacific Fair Shopping Centre located in Broadbeach (a short bus or Uber ride from Surfers Paradise), which is a huge shopping mall with an outdoor ambience. Here you can find luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada and mega brands like H&M, Uniqlo, and Zara. And of course, our favorite TARGET! ;p

We definitely loved the vibe in Gold Coast and enjoyed every minute of our stay. This is one place I'd really love to come back to and stay longer next time. :)

Holding koalas & kangaroos at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

I'm a big fan of Steve Irwin and it's definitely a dream of mine to go to the Australia Zoo. However, upon checking the location, Australia Zoo is quite far from Brisbane City where our hotel was. Actually, it's like the same distance that Gold Coast was, which was about an hour away.

Another alternative was to go to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary which was nearer and cheaper. Only 12km from Brisbane City, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is the world’s first and largest koala sanctuary with more than over a hundred koalas. Here you can hold a koala anytime, hand feed kangaroos, and meet a large variety of Australian wildlife in beautiful, natural settings.

Tickets were $85 for a family package, but we were able to get a discounted rate online for just $72. Much cheaper than the $172 family price for the Australia Zoo.

Lone Pine is also much smaller and you could easily go around the whole place in less than an hour (not including all the talks and shows). There was wi-fi everywhere too which was great so you could easily upload all your cute koala and kangaroo pics instantly!

When we got in, the first thing we did was line up for the koala encounter. It was $20 per person who wanted to carry the koala. So let's say my husband wanted to carry the koala as well, he had to pay another $20. So I just ended up carrying the koala and we just did a family pic. Funds from these photos support their wildlife research.

Here's some behind the scenes when the staff was handing me the koala. They actually had to give me another koala because the first one was getting fussy already! You have to be really still when they hand it to you. And they had me turn slowly the other way so we could see the koala's face. And it honestly felt like I was just carrying a furry baby!

As long as you paid the $20, you can also take photos on your own camera or phone. Hubby snapped some solo pics of me first. You have to be quick though, since sometimes the koala will turn the other way or look down.

And here's our official photo which we got a printed copy of. I was also able to download a hi-res copy online.

Inside the general store, there were all these framed photos of celebrities with koalas, like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Mariah Carey, and so much more! Aside from a koala, you can also get photos with a raptor and a snake.

If you're on a budget, there's a free encounter where you can have a pic beside a koala (their staff will be the one carrying it) using your own phone or camera. Of course, we lined up for this too. I mean how many more times can you get this close to a koala right? ;p

Lone Pine is really a koala sanctuary since there were koalas everywhere! I've never seen so many koalas up close, literally inches from you! It was so mesmerizing watching them eat and sleep hanging from branches. So cute!

The Koala Forest was a seating area surrounded by trees filled with koalas. It was so cool since you can have lunch here with the koalas as your view. I loved how everything was so open. It was like you can just reach out and grab a koala!

There were so many types of koalas too. There was even a kindergarten area for the babies and a retirement home for the old ones.

There were a number of shows and talks throughout the day too. We watched the Flight Raptor Show which demonstrates free-flying raptor hunting techniques while providing an insight into the secretive lives of magnificent birds such as owls, eagles and kites. The birds were really beautiful but dangerous. They even fed one of the birds a mouse (it was already dead don't worry) and we saw how it ripped right through it ewwww!

I was also super excited to get up close and personal with the kangaroos. The Kangaroo Reserve is home to around 150 free-ranging kangaroos and wallabies as well as emus and a wombat exhibit. To feed kangaroos and wallabies, specially ordered pellets are available from the General Store for $2.

the reserve was so huge and spacious
resting and sleeping kangaroos
me trying to blend in lol!

I wasn't sure how my kids were going to react at first since they seemed scared. But after they saw their dad feed a kangaroo, they started touching and petting them too. They loved it so much they didn't want to leave!

We just had to be careful stepping on their poop which was everywhere! Sometimes, you're feeding a kangaroo and it'll just poop right then and there lol! Surprisingly, it wasn't smelly though.

And look, I even saw a baby kangaroo nursing from its mommy!

This was probably one of the best experiences we've ever had. Just being in such close proximity to all those kangaroos was surreal! My daughter kept saying she wanted a kangaroo for a pet after.

Since it's a koala sanctuary though, there wasn't that much animals compared to a regular zoo. We did see other interesting animals like a tasmanian devil, barking owls, and grey-headed flying foxes (bats).

Plus there were these giant lizards just walking around. No biggie.

Visiting Lone Pine was probably the highlight of our trip since I got to fulfill my dreams of holding a koala and petting some kangaroos. And my kids got to experience it too which they loved and would never forget! Definitely a must visit when in Brisbane.

Our Movie World Vacation Video

I just hate flu season! I've pretty much been sick for like a week already and have just basically been in bed all day. It started with my youngest getting a fever, then my other son, then me. Then of course we all got cough and sipon too. Now that me and the kids are starting to get better, poor hubby has gotten a sore throat and has also taken a sick leave. Haaaay when will this end??

We always seem to get sick this time of year, probably since it's the start of school and of course the kids get exposed to all kinds of viruses. So many of their classmates have also been absent as well. The only good thing about this is I've lost weight lol! I haven't had the appetite to eat much lately since I can't taste my food. Oh and I've been binge watching and catching up on some shows like 13 Reasons Why and Grey's Anatomy.

I've also been quite uninspired to blog since I've been feeling so crappy. So in the meantime, I'll just share the video I made from our visit to Warner Bros. Movie World Theme Park. This is the very first video I made from our vacations and effort and pag edit haha. I just used the software the came with my camera so everything's pretty basic. I really have so much to learn pa, especially since I want to make family videos of our trips from now on. And the kids love watching it over and over too! Anyway, hope you enjoy this video! :)

If you’re someone who loves having people over or just simply having simple celebrations at home, one thing that’s always present in the table aside from food is… paper towels and napkins! I for one always have a huge supply of tissues at home. It’s always present in the grocery list since it’s just something we use everyday.

I’m sure you’ve come across the Cheers brand in the supermarket with its colorful and fun design. I’ve personally been a Cheers user for many years now. Did you know that this product is made of 100% Virgin Pulp and has no artificial whiteners and elemental chlorine which makes it truly hygienic?

What I also love about this brand is that it comes in many different configurations which makes it perfect for everyday use and special occasions.

Jumbo Kitchen Towels
I use the jumbo kitchen towels to wipe surfaces, to drain excess oil from food, to dry dishes and my hands. It’s also perfect for cleaning up after a party, or when my kids spill their drinks on the table or floor.

Pull Napkins
When the kids are eating or doing art activities, I just plop this in the middle of the table so they can just wipe when needed.

Paper Towels
I use this the same way as the jumbo towel roll, but what I like about this is that you just pull the paper out which makes it very convenient and practical. I also usually leave this out on the buffet table so guests can just get as needed.

Folded Party Napkins
I love using these table napkins when we have guests, especially since it has cute designs. It also comes in a refillable cardboard dispenser which makes it perfect for parties.

Flat Napkins
These big napkins are great for wrapping sandwiches if you have a kiddie party, for leftovers, or for baon.

Cheers also has other party or get-together needs such as starch-based cutleries and trash bags to complete your celebration from start to finish.

With all these types of paper napkins and party needs, you can be sure to find something for any occasion. No matter the celebration, big or small, from a neighborhood birthday party to just an intimate family dinner, Cheers is there to be part of those moments and help make everyday special. :)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid costume for Book Week

$

It's Book Week again at school and to celebrate, there will be a parade where the kids should dress up as their favorite book character. Last year, my daughter came as Little Red Riding Hood. This year, it was my son's turn and he actually came up with the idea of going as Greg Heffley from Diary of a Wimpy Kid!

It was funny because at first I was suggesting all these characters like Peter Pan or his old superhero costumes. But he insisted he wanted Diary of a Wimpy Kid since he and his sister have actually read the book and watched the movies. And when I thought about it, this was probably the easiest costume ever! It was just regular clothes which we already had in his closet - a white shirt, black shorts, white socks, black sneakers, and a black backpack. It was also going to be super comfortable for him since they had to wear the costume the whole day. Win-win for us!

I also printed out the character's comic face on cardboard paper so it would complete his look. The face in the book cover looks sad but my son said he wanted a smiling face haha :) I cut holes in the eyes so he could see while walking in the parade, and taped a big popsicle stick (which I colored black with a marker) on the bottom for him to hold. Plus, this could also be used as a fan when it gets hot lol! ;p

We have the actual book but I was worried it might get lost if he brought it. So what I did was just print the cover and taped it to another old book we had. You can do this too if you don't have the book and don't want to buy it.

And there you have it, a super easy Diary of a Wimpy Kid costume!

Here I am telling him to channel Greg Heffley...

And this is when I said to act "wimpy" lol! That face! ;p

Best part is that I didn't need to spend for this since we had everything on hand already. And my son absolutely loves his outfit! :)

DIY Hermione Granger costume

Now it's my daughter's turn to dress up for Book Week at school and she wanted to be none other than Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series.

My kids have only seen the first movie so far, and I can't wait for them to read the books. Anyway, this costume was fairly easy since I already had all of the major components in our closets. For the top, I borrowed a white polo from her brother (luckily they're the same size). I couldn't find a gray skirt in the mall, so good thing I remembered I had this pleated skirt from years ago that luckily I hadn't thrown out yet (see, sometimes being a hoarder has its benefits ;p). I just adjusted the waistline to make it smaller for her.

I also found this maroon necktie from my son's stash and I couldn't believe it was the exact color I needed! For the yellow stripes, I just wrapped a yellow ribbon around the necktie and sewed it in. The back looks like a mess but that's fine. ;p

For the cloak, I just got my black cardigan which was perfect since it was long on her. However, she decided she wanted it to have a hood and make my life that much harder lol!

Good thing it's actually pretty easy to make a hood. I didn't have time to buy black cloth so I just got an old black shirt and cut the back part. Then I got a jacket to use as a template for the hood.

Make sure you have 2 pieces of black cloth, lay it on top of each other, and just cut along the pattern of the hood. Leave some allowance since you will be sewing along the curved part.

Open it up and just attach it to the neckline of the cardigan / sweater. I just sewed it really quickly using a running stitch.

And there you have it! My daughter was so impressed she said the hood looked like it was really part of the cardigan. :)

For the badge, I saw patches of the different houses being sold on Lazada.com. For P400, I think I'll just make one. All I did was look for a Gryffindor crest online and print it out.

I pasted it on some thick cardboard and used double sided tape to attach this nametag I found with a safety pin on it. I didn't have a hot glue gun that time, but you can just glue the safety pin directly on the cardboard. Then I colored all the sides and back part with a black marker.

For the wand, again you can find all kinds in Lazada.com. There's actually different wands for each of the characters. They also sell all kinds of Harry Potter accessories like scarves, bonnets, bags, etc. So you can really go all out if you want. But being kuripot, I didn't want to spend P500+ so I just went to our garden and got a tree branch haha! In fairness, it kinda looks like a real wand right? ;p

To complete the look, I braided her hair before she slept so she would wake up with curly buhaghag hair.

And there you have it, my DIY Hermione costume. The only thing I bought were the gray socks (I wanted them to be longer, but there weren't any knee-high ones when I went to the mall) then she just used her school shoes. She actually wanted to have a gray sweater over the white polo, and I'm sure it would have looked great, but I said that might be too hot since she would have to wear the costume the whole day. Besides, she looks cute already. :)

You can also check out the other costumes we did for Book WeekHERE and HERE.

DaVinciBricks LEGO Lab

My kids love Lego so it was a treat for them to go to a DaVinciBricks LEGO Lab last July 16. It was held at McDonald's here in BF Homes so it was double the fun for them too.

DaVinciBricks is an award-winning STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) children’s enrichment program from the US. It uses motorized Lego and K'nex kits and turns children’s STEM education into a work of art!

They offer different programs here in Manila and aim to introduce the value of STEM education to children as early as 4 years old.

My kids were super excited to learn all about building these models. The best part is that these models move, just like robots!

After a short talk where the kids were introduced to the concepts and how to follow the instructions, they were all given their own individual kits.

My kids have no problem building Legos, and it wasn't long before they got the groove of things. They had to build a motorized car and it was so cool seeing the pieces come to life.

Here were some other models like a windmill and a helicopter.

My kids had so much fun and actually want to enroll in the program. I think it's an enriching experience which could really improve their creativity and curiosity. If you're interested too, you can check out their contact information below.

I've been meaning to buy this IKEA Raskog Trolley for the longest time. It comes in a variety of colors like white, black, turquoise, beige, and rust.

The cheapest one I saw online from an Instagram seller was I think P2,800. However, I was in SM Southmall last weekend and saw this look-alike in the department store for P2,500. Since it was their 3-day sale, I got it at 10% off plus an additional 5% rebate. So it came to about P2,100. Not bad since the price in IKEA Singapore is $59 which is roughly the same when converted.

It only comes in white and black though, so I think I still might buy the turquoise one from IKEA eventually. But super happy with this one for now. It was also really easy to assemble by just screwing everything together.

If you notice, the IKEA version doesn't have the handles on top unlike the one from SM. I personally like the handles because it makes it easier to move it around.

Well, surprise surprise, my daughter ended up wanting the cart for herself. It was so funny since the next time I saw it, she had already put stickers and her stuff in it already! ;p

Can I just say how cute this Hello Kitty tea set from the McDonald's Happy Meal is? My daughter wheels the cart everywhere and says it's like the serving trolley from the airplane. And then she asks us what we want to drink and then pretends to serve us! ;p

Here's some of her coloring materials...

Then at the bottom is all her magazines and more stuff.

I really love how versatile this cart is. You can also use it to organize your kitchen or bathroom stuff, for your make-up, as a baby diaper station, a bar cart, and so much more. Definitely getting more of these!

Exploring Cairns City, Australia

Last summer, we were fortunate enough to visit Australia twice. The first time we went to Brisbane. The second time was in Cairns.

To be honest, I wasn't familiar with Cairns (pronounced ‘CANS’) before finding out we were going there. It's basically known as the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, and Cape Tribulation in Tropical North Queensland Australia.

Since hubby had work there, we jumped at the chance to go with him. Seeing the Great Barrier Reef was definitely on my bucket list and I also wanted the kids to experience nature and see as much of the world as possible.

We went end of May to first week of June and it was actually the start of the winter season already in Australia (June to August). But since Cairns has a tropical climate all year round, the weather was just the right amount of cool for us. And it really felt so good to escape the sweltering Manila heat!

Cairns City has a very laid back vibe and is framed by a backdrop of breathtaking scenery. I mean look at the view right outside our hotel windows!

Btw, our hotel was the Mantra Trilogy which had a really spacious 1-bedroom apatrment. I loved the fully equipped kitchen since we saved a lot of money by just buying food from the grocery and cooking. The room also had bathtub, plus a washer and dryer. And we loved the huge balcony which of course had the gorgeous view of the pool and ocean.

The best part about the hotel was definitely its location though. It was near the airport and just a short walk from the famous Cairns Esplanade and also the Reef Fleet Terminal where the Great Barrier Reef day trips depart from.

Actually, the city is not that big so you could walk pretty much anywhere. It was all very relaxed and chill, which was a nice change from being in a bustling city (although I have to admit, I am a city girl at heart).

tourists ;p
Cairns Art Gallery
Cairns Post Office

Probably the area we enjoyed the most was the Cairns Esplanade, which is a scenic promenade that includes a swimming lagoon, waterfront boardwalks, and BBQ areas. There were also so many good restaurants nearby which made it really hard to pick one when we'd eat. We'd pass this area everyday when walking back to our hotel and it was especially pretty at night lighted up.

You know me, I love shopping! So at first I was worried since there was only one major mall in the CBD, the Cairns Central Shopping Centre. But then I found out it had a Target and a Kmart which was all I needed lol! There was also a Coles, Smiggle, and Typo! Needless to say, we were there practically everyday. ;p

Most businesses and shops in Australia close quite early at around 5-6pm. Good thing there's the Cairns Night Markets & Food Court which opens from 4:30pm til late. It's a great place to grab a bite and browse around the different stalls selling Australian souvenirs, food products, jewelry, clothing, massage oils, arts & crafts, and many more.

I also noticed there were a lot of Aboriginal art around the city which gave us a little peek into their past and culture.

We loved exploring Cairns and I would definitely wish to come back soon. There are a lot of day trips and tours you can take while here. Of course, we took the Great Barrier Reef and also the Kuranda tours which I'll be posting about next. :)

Celebrating my birthday at Disneyland!

I'm now officially in my mid-thirties! Usually I don't even celebrate my birthday, but this year hubby decided we should go to Hong Kong and spend it at Disneyland. :)

It was just a super short trip and it was just the 2 of us. I'm a huge advocate of the importance of couple time. Sometimes, we get caught up with our roles as parents that we forget to nurture our marriage. As a stay at home mom, honestly I can't help but sometimes get frazzled with the kids. And when hubby gets home from work, I end up venting my frustrations to him, nagging him to do this and do that. I've also been so stressed lately since it was the kids' exam week and I've been so busy making reviewers and helping them study. It was just so nice to have a short break and spend it together, just us. And yeah, I made us wear matching shirts (from Uniqlo) para super cheesy na talaga hehe! Ang dami lang namin kapareho ha ;p

Since we basically just went to Disneyland, we stayed at the Regal Airport Hotel. Super convenient since it's directly connected to the airport so no need to take a taxi or train. We literally just walked 2 minutes inside the airport and we were there. Plus, they have a free shuttle to Disneyland too!

I booked our tickets via Klook.com and their prices are cheaper than in the actual Disney website. I also got a 5% discount since there was a promo with BPI. The ticket is valid until next year, which was good in case you have a change of plans last minute. I just printed out the e-voucher and presented it right at the main entrance (you can also present the mobile voucher). It was so easy and convenient since no need to have the voucher exchanged to an actual ticket at a booth, main entrance na kaagad. This was my first time booking at Klook.com and it won't be the last.

I also bought a meal voucher since the reviews were good. The package cost P913 then I got 5% discount for using my BPI card so it was just P867. It's valid for one combo meal (1 meal + 1 drink) at any of the restaurants. You also get coupons for a free frozen lollipop or popcorn (we got the popcorn), and a $5 discount on a soft drink.

We ate at Starliner Diner in Tomorrowland which serves American-style fast food. Since it's valid for any meal, we chose the most expensive one, the grilled steak which was $135 (about P885). The popcorn is $38 (P250). Then we got a Coke for $27 after the $5 discount. So we saved about P300. But if you won't get popcorn or the ice cream, there are available combo meals at just $99 (P650) which is cheaper than getting the voucher.

Btw, you have to exchange the Klook meal voucher to actual coupons at the Customer Service/Guest Relations counter near the entrance gate. I also told them it was birthday (baka may gift or something haha) and they gave me this pin which was defiitely a cute souvenir. :)

The last time we were here was in November 2014 and a lot has been added since then, like the Marvel and Star Wars attractions.

We headed first to the Iron Man Experience, which was a 3D ride that takes you on a virtual flight through Hong Kong.

While lining up for the ride, you also get to see all these cool high-tech creations of Stark Industries. The innovations are displayed in four exhibition halls: the Hall of Legacy, the Hall of Protection, the Hall of Energy and the Hall of Mobility. So you really won't get bored while waiting in line even if it was 30 minutes or more.

Then you pick up a pair of StarkVision glasses and you're ready to go! It was a fun ride similar to Transformers in Universal Studios SG. I loved how they showcased Hong Kong as the location for Iron Man's mission.

Then, we headed next door to the Iron Man Tech Showcase. We really thought this was some kind of exhibit or something. Little did we know, we were going to meet Iron Man and just have a photo-op with him lol.

The Mission: Dimensions of Danger attraction was a lot of fun! Basically, you get to step into the exciting Marvel Universe with this immersive, action-packed and interactive walkthrough experience.

The whole concept was to help Doctor Strange recover the Portal Nexus before Hydra does. Along the way, you’ll encounter superheroes like Black Widow, Hawkeye, Thor, and Star-Lord. The guide was just speaking in Chinese the whole time though so you just had to kinda guess what they were saying. But the superheroes were thankfully speaking in English naman. ;p

For Star Wars, we rode the Hyperspace Mountain, which was the old Space Mountain ride. There was also a Jedi Training show for kids and photo encounters with characters like Chewbacca and BB-8.

I love watching shows in theme parks, and I haven't seen Mickey & the Wondrous Book yet. We've already seen Lion King before so we just skipped that and watched this instead.

I super LOVED this show! Mickey and the other characters were again speaking in Chinese, but there were subtitles displayed on stage. Good thing the song performances were in English and they were all so fabulous! My favorite were the princesses - Ariel, Rapunzel, Merida, and of course Elsa singing Let it Go.

We also checked out the Fairy Tale Forest, a whimsical garden featuring classic Disney Fairytales as living storybooks.

I especially loved seeing these miniature castles of Beauty and the Beast, Tangled, The Little Mermaid and Cinderella.

This was also our first time to ride the Disneyland Railroad which takes you around the park. It was a hot day so it was nice to sit and relax for a couple of minutes onboard the train.

We also checked out some of our favorites like Toy Story Land. Definitely made me miss the kids since they loved the rides here like the Parachute Drop and Slinky Dog Spin.

When we were with the kids last time, we really made it a point to line up for pictures with the Disney characters and princesses. Especially Sleeping Beauty since she was my daughter's favorite. This time the only character I was able to take a pic with was Elsa since we just happened to pass by her and there was a short line. I remember when we went back in 2014 and Frozen was still new, the line for Elsa and Anna was SOOOOOO long! ;p

And finally, you can't go to Disneyland without watching a parade right? The Paint the Night Parade is one of my favorites and no matter how many times I've seen this, it still gives me chills and puts a lump in my throat. I end up waving and calling the names of the characters, and singing and dancing along to the music. Disney really brings out the child in all of us!

It was a super fun and tiring day, and it was the perfect way to celebrate my birthday. It was super hot though and it made me realize to bring the kids when the weather is cooler. I'm sure they would have been uncomfortable in that heat, kawawa naman. I think I lost 5 pounds from just sweating lol!

Thank you hubby for this Disney date! I love you so much and I'm so grateful for all the things you do for me and the kids. Sa 40th ko, Disneyland Paris naman ha? ;p LOL!

Long weekend staycations

I haven't been blogging lately since I've just been enjoying time with the fam, especially with all these long weekends. We love going on staycations and I made sure to take advantage of all these rainy day promos the different hotels have been offering.

For my birthday, we stayed in Somerset Alabang. You can read all about our previous stay HERE including the room and different ammenities. We got a 1-bedroom like before and had a great time as usual. Since it was my birthday, the staff even sang me a song in our room! :)

The kids also had a blast playing Twister and having a onesie party! Btw, I got these onesies from Target during our trip to Australia.

Just this long weekend, we stayed in Crimson Hotel. We've already stayed here a number of times and the kids really like it here. It was super last minute and I booked just the day before. And I got a great deal since the promo was P8,500 all-in for 3 days and 2 nights, with breakfast, and P1,000 dining credit. Although I would have preferred Acacia Hotel since it's walking distance to McDonald's and Jollibee, plus the rooms there have a bathtub. But they didn't have any more promos when I inquired.

We spent the P1,000 dining credit for room service which the kids loved! Oh, and there was also Sunday mass held at one of the ballrooms. It was at 11am, so we even got to hear mass before checking out which was great.

We had such a great and relaxing time and now the kids are begging for a staycation every week lol!

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is one of those places I'd just dream about visiting and never did I think I'd actually get to go here. But when hubby had to go to Cairns Australia for work, we jumped at the chance to go with him since Cairns is basically the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.

One of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays and literally hundreds of picturesque tropical islands with some of the worlds most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and pulling away from it, and viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space. (source)

Green Island

The Great Barrier Reef has over 100 islands and there are a number of tour options you can do like the more popular Green Island, Fitzroy Island, or Michaelmas Cay. After researching about it, we decided to just book a day trip to Green Island since it honestly seemed the most tourist friendly with restaurants, shops, and even a pool. Since we were with the kids, we wanted them to be as comfortable as possible. Some would prefer a more "untouched" island and would avoid the touristy places, so it really depends on what you want to do.

Only 45 minutes from Cairns, Green Island is a beautiful 6000 year old coral cay located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, with unique island rainforests, surrounded by white sandy beaches & magnificent coral reefs and abundant marine life.

aerial view of Green Island

I decided to book via Experience Oz which is where I also booked our theme park tickets when we visited Gold Coast. I booked a whole day tour which leaves Cairns at 8:30am and then departs Green Island at 4:30pm. Travel time to the island is approximately 45 minutes on an air-conditioned fast catamaran cruise. The package also includes a choice of glass bottom boat coral viewing tour OR use of snorkelling equipment, use of island swimming pool and day visitor facilities.

Our hotel was just walking distance to the Reef Fleet Terminal which was super convenient.

There are different companies offering day trips and the one I booked was via Great Adventures. We had to check-in first at the counter to exchange our vouchers for boarding passes. Good thing we got there quite early because the line became long super fast.

that's our boat!

Tea and coffee were served onboard. They also gave free medicine for sea sickness. Hubby drank but I didn't... and I wish I did! The ride was fast and the boat would go up and down when it would hit the waves. The kids loved it and would even lift their arms like it was a rollercoaster! I just closed my eyes and tried to sleep lol! Luckily I didn't puke, but the staff were going around prepared with bags in case anyone wanted to vomit haha! ;p

cheers!
enjoying the boat ride
we're here!
it was so windy in this part going to the island, probably because we were in the middle of the sea

ready to explore

There are lots of optional activities offered on Green Island. You can snorkle, scuba dive, walk underwater with helmet diving, semi submarine coral viewing tours, parasailing and scenic helicopter flights. There’s even the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat with daily crocodile shows.

Included in our package was a choice of glass bottom boat coral viewing tour OR use of snorkelling equipment. Of course we got the glass bottom boat tour which we super enjoyed! It was surreal seeing all the corals and marine life in the Great Barrier Reef! There was even a part where huge fish were jumping on one side of the boat, it was amazing! We just brought our own goggles so just bring your own gear if you plan on snorkelling too. :)

It was funny because me and hubby were joking about sharks. And when we were leaving in the afternoon, we actually saw sharks in this part of the water where people were snorkelling earlier in the day! They weren't great white sharks (I think blacktip?) but still I would have been freaked if I saw one while swimming!

Anyway, we just spent the first few hours just swimming and lounging around in the beach.

Then the kids swam in the pool and we had lunch. Kwento lang, there were these annoying birds hanging around the restaurants probably scavenging for food. And one of them actually flew to our table and tried to grab our fries! Buti na lang we were almost done, kainis!

Green Island is a small (15-hectare) coral cay which can be effortlessly walked around in 20 minutes. The edges of the island are either compacted coral or rather beautiful coral/sand beaches while the interior is predominantly rainforest, home to 126 native plant species and a myriad of birdlife.

We enjoyed walking around the island because it was just so beautiful. Our favorite part was probably in the back of the island which we had almost all to ourselves. It felt like we were in another world and the kids just loved exploring the area. Warning, lots of pictures below! ;p

We had an unforgettable day and I still can't believe we were able to have this incredible experience. The world is really so beautiful and I just want to see more of it!

bye Green Island!

Going back, me and hubby made sure to drink the anti-sea sickness medicine. And it worked! I don't know if we were just tired though, but we were all pretty much asleep on the ride back. ;p Oh, and we also checked out the crocodile habitat on the island which I'll just blog about separately.

Meeting the World's Largest Crocodile! (Green Island, Australia)

Do you remember Lolong? He was captured back in 2012 in Mindanao and was declared the largest crocodile in captivity. The Guinness record was previously held by Cassius, a 5.48-meter crocodile being cared for at Marineland Melanesia on Green Island, off the coast of Cairns in Queensland, Australia. Well, after Lolong died in 2013, the record reverted back to Cassius. And we were able to meet him!

I've always been fascinated with reptiles like snakes and crocodiles even if I'm deathly scared of them. When we visited Green Island in the Great Barrier Reef, I found out that there was a crocodile zoo and I really wanted to see it. I mean we were in Australia after all, and I wanted to see some crocs!

Marineland Melanesia is a unique attraction on Green Island. It's home to over 50 crocodiles, marine aquariums with coral, fish, giant sea turtles, and a magnificent range of tribal carvings.

And it is also home to Cassius - the current largest crocodile in captivity!

We got there just in time for the feeding show. And we got to meet all the other crocodiles living there too.

Bulla and Bella were our favorite since they were a couple. They actually have a baby which was in another enclosure.

They looked like statues! As in Bella's mouth was just open like that the whole time.

Then the feeding show started. It was so cool seeing the crocodiles snap their jaws and jump out of the water!

Then we headed over to meet Cassius...

I don't think you can see how BIG he really is from these photos, but trust me, he was huge! He's over 17 feet long and I couldn't believe he was just inches away from us!

Here's a photo of him in a newspaper article, and you can see his size compared to a person.

Because he's more than a hundred years old already, he's not as quick as before. So he was just moving his head to get the food. But you could tell how powerful he still is with the way his jaws sounded chomping the meat. It was just amazing seeing this massive creature before us!

There were a lot of other displays too like the skin of Oscar, one of the other huge crocs they had before. The kids were pretty freaked out about this though. ;p

There were so many interesting articles, photos, and clippings about the crocs, like the photo below which was when they captured Oscar, along with 2 other crocodiles. Can you imagine being on the boat with these creatures?!

Aside from the crocodiles, there were also aquariums and giant sea turtles.

Marineland is also home to one of the world's most extensive collections of Tribal Art which were brought all the way from Papua New Guinea. It just made you feel like you were another world altogether. I just kept thinking, don't touch anything, there might be spirits within these artifacts!

Their aquariums also showcase a diverse range of marine life and other unique creatures.

It was one of the highlights of our day, and until now the kids remember all the info they learned from the croc feeders. So glad we met Cassius and hope he lives for many more years to come. ;p

Tori Ichi Yakitori & Bar (Filinvest Alabang)

Hubby and I just love Japanese food. So one date night, we decided to try Tori Ichi Yakitori and Bar which is located at the ground floor of Festival Mall’s newest wing.

Tori Ichi is a Japanese restaurant originally from Kyoto and they specialize in an extensive array of yakitori. Aside from Festival Mall, they also have brances in BGC, 30th Ayala, and MOA.

Tori Ichi only uses Binchotan (Japanese charcoal) in cooking their yakitori which gives it that special flavor. We decided to get the Tomodachi Set which is 10 pieces of assorted yakitori so we could have a taste of most of the meat they had on the menu.

These were the sticks included in the sets:

hot towel and appetizer before our meal
Tomodachi Set P550
chicken meatball, quail eggs with bacon, chicken & scallion, chicken liver, corn on the cob
bacon-wrapped asparagus, seasoned rib-eye, pork belly, chicken gizzard, chicken & wing

Everything was so good! I felt like we were back in Japan eating at Omoide Yokocho in Shinjuku. I didn't try the liver and gizzard though but hubby said it was ok. But the rest were so flavorful and amazing! I think we could have finished the 20 stick set lol ;p

They also have other items on their menu like rice meals, sushi, maki, ramen and noodles. We also ordered salmon sashimi and Dashimaki Tamago (Japanese rolled omelette).

Salmon Sashimi P250
Dashimaki Tamago P95

I think we have a new favorite spot in Festival Mall. Definitely a thumbs-up for this Japanese restaurant!
