Sensory play with Gulaman

$

0
Are you looking for a fun activity your kids can do that can keep them entertained for a long time? Then just head on over to the grocery and buy a couple of packs of these jelly powder mixes! They're super cheap too at just P10 each.

Each sachet can fill a couple of containers so you can make a batch for your kids and another batch for eating. We used these baking tins, but if you have other shaped molds, that would be cute too!

You have to put the mixture in the refrigerator first for it to set. That was probably the hardest thing for the kids to do - WAIT!

But once it was ready, the kids were so excited just touching and feeling the jelly! At first, they were just poking it inside the trays. But once they got more adventurous, they started holding it and really playing with it! Miley and I even pretended we were doing surgery and the gulaman was the heart and other body parts haha (sorry, Grey's Anatomy addict here!). The best part too is that it's not messy at all, just slippery and jiggly. I loved the cold, gooey feeling it had. The kids couldn't get enough of it too! ;)

Even baby Skyler had a blast. I loved seeing his face just feeling the texture and trying not to let it slip out of his hands!

The jelly mix comes in different colors so you can make a whole rainbow of gulaman for the kids to play with. And if they want to taste it too, no problem since it is edible (just make sure it's clean and not something they've rolled on the floor already hehe). Having your child play with different types of textures, tastes and objects definitely helps them discover and explore the world more at an early age. ;)

Our Kidzania Manila Experience

The kids had no school last August 13 so me and a fellow mommy decided to bring the them to Kidzania to take advantage of the cheaper rate while it’s still on soft opening (from August 7 until October 7, 2015). Plus, it was a weekday so we were expecting less people.

First off, we already bought tickets at National Bookstore (Ticketworld) beforehand since I saw online that tickets can get sold out (especially during the weekend). Side kwento pala, a few days after, we found out that our school field trip will be at Kidzania too! Ayayay! And I’m sure almost all the schools will be going on field trips here, so if you’re not in a rush to go, wait na lang for your school so as not to double expenses. But it’s ok, I wouldn’t mind going again especially since there are so many activities that can be done.

everyone has their own security bracelet

Anyway, I read other blogs beforehand that gave their own accounts of their visits but the ones I read were mostly during the media launch. Seeing the various activities and areas in Kidzania was helpful, but I think it’s a bit different when you visit as a paying customer. I want to share my own experience and observations since I was a bit disappointed with some parts and I believe they definitely still have a lot of things to work on.

Entrance
Take note that if you’re going to the basement parking, the entrance is along Rizal Drive, which is at the back of the building. Almost everyone like us kasi went to the street where the main entrance of Kidzania was facing. Parang drop-off point lang pala un. Just use Google Maps or Waze if you’re not familiar with the area.

Parking
There is basement parking in the building itself but it’s quite expensive. P40 for the first 4 hours then P50 PER SUCCEEDING HOUR. We ended up spending P190 for the day (to think ang mahal na nga ng tickets right!).

Field Trips
Since they opened to the public just last August 7, I wasn’t expecting that they were already accepting field trips. But when we got there, I saw 2 huge buses with school kids unloading. So even if you go on a weekday, expect a lot of people from other schools. But I’m sure it’s still better than the weekend.

Fire Station Activity Rant
We decided to do the fire activity first since based on what I read online, it seemed to be the most popular activity. So we wanted to do it na just in case there were more people later on. We were the 3rd batch and they said each batch was 20 minutes. But we lined up for almost 2 hours! Based on the time, each batch took about 45 minutes. And the worst part was they weren't even able to ride the fire truck!

The thing was, there were so many students in the main plaza who did a performance. I found out later on when I checked Kidzania’s IG that it was apparently the birthday of Eugenio Lopez. So when it was our turn for the fire activity, they couldn’t use the fire truck because obviously the street was blocked by all the dancing students. I was very upset along with the kids and the other parents. I wish they could have warned us beforehand that they wouldn’t be using the fire truck during this time so that we could have done another activity instead right? When we complained about this, the staff said we would have to line up again if the kids wanted to ride. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? E di wala na kaming nagawa buong araw! Forget it, good thing our kids were able to ride an actual fire truck at school already before hmph! We just took their pics by the truck na lang din.

Activity Times
There are signs (plaques) right outside each activity telling you the capacity of kids allowed and duration of each activity. Some 10 minutes, some 15, some 20. However, we soon realized that the time is waaaay longer than that, like with our fire station experience. Especially since in other activities, they only have 1 staff member manning the entire place.

For example, in the Construction activity, it said duration was 15 minutes. Quick lang right?

However, there was only one girl helping the kids wear their uniforms, collect their passports, pay them their kidZos… then she has to clean the entire place after for the next batch of kids! As in dismantling the blocks, putting back the tools, hanging the uniforms… So the turnaround time for each batch was actually around 30 minutes (or even more depending on the speed of the staff member).

see all those blocks? she has to take them apart one by one pa...

Same with the Baby Care activity, which had 20 minutes as their duration. I timed it and each batch took about 45 minutes. It's either they do something to stick to the actual stated time, or change what's written on the plaque so people will have a more realistic time frame. I mean come on, it's not just 5-10 minutes difference were talking about here, it's more than double the said time.

Undermanned
It would make such a huge difference if they added more staff members. I mean, at least 2 for each activity right? And they need to fix their system to maximize the time and manage the lines especially in the popular attractions.

For example. The PaZZport Office area only had 2 staff members. And almost everyone passes through here! People were already complaining, especially since the lines got so long when the field trip kids showed up.

So imagine for each kid, they need to get your details and input it on the computer, take the photo of the child, get the payment, then fix the passport (manually I might add). The time will really add up. I suggest you do this at once when you enter Kidzania since the kids get extra kidZos per activity. We were so excited to do the Fire Acivity first, then realized after the kids didn't have a passport. Plus, it's a nice souvenir too.

Staff Lunch Breaks
Another popular activity was the Baby Care. We were already lined up for a while and based on the number of kids, I knew we would be in the next batch already. However, as soon as the batch in front of us were inside, the staff says that the nurse will go on a 1 hour lunch break after. Ok, I get that they need their break time too. But couldn’t they have announced this earlier or put a sign saying that lunch break was from this time to that time? So again, people won’t waste their time lining up. And don’t they have a replacement or sub for that person? Other activities didn’t go on lunch break naman...

they placed this sign AFTER they told us about the break

The thing was, we came back after an hour and good thing we were the first in line. But then there was still no one there. One mom called a manager already and we were told the activity would resume at 2:15pm. It was past 2:30 when the staff member arrived. Again, they should be more conscious with the time, considering everyone is trying to cram as much activities as possible within the day. And for the sign, I think they should put WHAT TIME to come back later right?

Suggestion for faster turnaround time
I don't know how helpful this suggestion will be or maybe they've already considered this but it's just not doable. But based on what I saw (and this was also from the other parents' observations we were with), they can definitely maximize time by adding more staff members and overlapping the batches (even during peak times man lang).

Like here in Baby Care, the nursery is separated from the reception. So it's possible that while Batch A is inside with the babies, they can have Batch B come in already so they can have their passports stamped, wear uniforms, and be briefed about the activity. In this case also, the staff member was alone, so she had to do everything herself which took more time.

Same with the Fire Station activity. which starts with the kids wearing the uniforms then watching a safety video. Then after, they go to the hotel to put the fire out then ride the truck. Sana, once the kids are putting the fire out in the other area, they can ask the next batch to come in already and put on the uniforms and maybe watch the video. Just to lessen waiting time in line for everyone right?

maybe the next batch can watch the video already while the others are putting out the hotel fire

Eating Area
I think they need to add more tables and chairs in the eating area, especially where McDonald's is. When we were there, I saw field trip kids all sitting on the floor. In fact when it was my turn to eat (we just took turns while waiting in line with the kids) I had no table and just ate my food using another chair. Plus, they should be prepared for the amount of people. When I ordered chicken from Mcdo, they said to come back for it in 20 minutes. And to think there are more people on weekends right!

Oh, and they have a very limited menu for McDonald's. No fries, burgers, or nuggets. It was just the fried chicken, spaghetti and the sundaes.

Manage your time, priorities, and kids
You will definitely not be able to do all the activities your kids want because 1) there’s only so much time in the day & 2) there’s so much to choose from!

Our game plan was really to do the popular ones first just to get it out of the way. Our priorities were really the Fire Station, Aviation Academy, and Baby Care Center. The rest, whatever had the shortest lines na lang. The girls ended up doing 6 activities (Fire Station, Aviation, Baby Care, Emergency Room, Construction, and Beauty Salon) while my son was able to do 7 (Fire Station, Aviation, Baby Care, Emergency Room, Gas Station, Car Dealership, and Police Station). We arrived at 9:30 and left until the 4:00pm closing. So if you really want to make the most of your day, be there as early as possible.

It was funny since the parents in line were all becoming friends na kasi we all share the same sentiments and of course, chika na while waiting. Usual question was, “naka-ilan activity na kayo?” The others 3-4 lang, so we considered ourselves lucky already. Imagine if we didn’t line up that long sa Fire Station? Baka naka extra 3 activities pa kami. We were joking nga, mas marami pa kaming nasakyan sa Hong Kong Disneyland lol! ;p So just expect to line up and wait.

Also, because of the capacity per activity, some kids ended up crying (hysterically) when they were cut off. So sometimes, the staff would allow na lang 1 more person just so they’d calm down. May nagcomment tuloy na mommy, “sana pala nagwala na din anak ko kanina!” haha! Just check the sign na lang at once for the limit so you know if you will make it to the current or next batch pa.

Get ready to stretch those leg muscles!
I don’t know about the other parents who’ve been here but we were super tired from standing up almost all day darting from one activity to the next! Even if they say that only child visitors can line up and enter, of course we still had to accompany and wait for them right outside since they're young pa (4-5 years old). And of course, to take pictures! :)

For those with older kids, I'm sure the parents can just relax and sit down somewhere and just meet them after. But for our kids, we have to really stay with them and stand where they can see us. So we weren’t even able to check out the parents lounge haha. I wish they had chairs or benches while waiting in line for the kids though. You could see the younger ones getting impatient and tired from standing up. Tip, bring those mini folding stools/chairs if you have them, since they'll be super handy here!

are we next?

Closing Time
They start closing the activities around 20-30 minutes before closing time (4pm on weekdays) and just let one final batch in. So just be aware in case you still want to squeeze in an activity your kids really like. Line up for it na before you miss the cut off.

good thing we still made it to the final batch of the beauty salon, whew!

Also, we didn't make it in time to the bank to deposit our kidZos and get our ATM card. So we just have to hold on to the kids' money until we come back next time.

Even though we were so tired already, I think bitin pa din un time! Sana they open until 6pm man lang. ;p

Photos
You can mostly see what your kids will be doing and take pictures, but there are some activities with limited visibility. Like the Aviation School since you couldn't really see what they were doing inside the simulator. But they have official photographers roaming around to take nice close-up shots. Be sure to check out your child’s photos before you leave. They’ll scan your kid’s bracelet and all the photos taken of him/her within the day in the different activities will pop out. Here are the prices:

so cute!

Anyway, hope this prepares you for your future trip to Kidzania. I understand this is just their soft opening so they definitely have a lot of things to improve on. Hopefully when the time comes for us to have our field trip, they have already addressed these issues.

But did we have fun? Of course we did! The kids even said they liked it better than Disneyland since they really enjoyed doing actual grown-up stuff. I honestly can't wait to be back and see the kids do more activities. :)

Mothers Who Brunch Goes Asian

I was invited to the 3rd installment of the Mothers Who Brunch event, organized by Sab of Sinfully Sabrina and Michelle of Momma ‘N Manila last August 22. Again, it was held at the Viking Range Showroom in Westgate Alabang. It was actually raining pretty hard that morning so I was afraid the event was going to get cancelled! But luckily, the rains died down, so we were all able to enjoy this wonderful event with friends and good food.

This time, the theme was Asian and Boqueria Lifestyle Market beautifully styled the place to perfection. I love the fans that were placed in each setting, which we were also able to take home as a souvenir.

It was also great seeing Chef Arnold and Chef Anna from the Pastry Armoire event! I knew then that we were definitely in for a treat since I couldn't get enough of their cooking last time. :)

Chef Arnold and Chef Anna

But before all that, another surprise was waiting for us upstairs. We all took part in a flower arranging class which I later learned was called Ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement). It was my first time and I have to admit it was really fun! We also got to take home our creations including these lovely vases from L'Indochine.

Then it was time for the food! If before, we helped out in the kitchen, now we just watched Chef Arnold do his thing hehe. He demonstrated how to cook his Gourmet Spicy Tinapa Fried Rice, which was soooo good!

The smell was really amazing and we were all getting so hungry and excited to eat! Check out all the food we feasted on:

Fresh Spring Rolls
Cedar Plank Asian Salmon
Asian Chicken Lettuce Wraps
Spicy Lechon Belly
Gourmet Tinapa Rice
Matcha Blondies, Kashi Maki, Kaffir Lime Tartlets from Pastry Armoire

We also brought home a ton of goodies like an embroidered pouch and gift checks from L'Indochine, makeup from Benefit Cosmetics, a delicious leche flan brownie from Pastry Armoire, products from Lee Kum Kee and Glad Kitchen, plus Chef Arnold's Deep Dips Gourmet. Thank you!!!

Again, thank you to Sab and Michelle and congratulations on another successful event. I can't wait to see Mothers Who Brunch grow even bigger in the future.

My high school barkada and I got together the day after my birthday last month to celebrate and see our friend Pier who was visiting from Singapore. We are actually 7 in the group and we've fondly called ourselves PMF since grade school (don't ask what it means haha!). The last time we were all together was a couple of years ago pa since the others have moved abroad to work. So having 4 of us in one place is actually pretty great already! :)

We had lunch in Champetre, an authentic French restaurant in the Fort. The last time I've eaten here was I think 2 years ago, but everything still looked and felt the same. You can check out their menu HERE.

And I was even surprised with a birthday song and cake! Thanks girls! :)

Of course, Pier had one too haha! Although "welcome home" for the weekend lang lol! ;p

Even though we don't get to see each other as often, it's like things never changed when we do. So happy to have these girls in my life. Cheers! :)

How to make your own playdough (no cook recipe)

$

My 5 year old daughter: Mom, I'm bored. What can I do?!

Me: Your homework!

Her: What???!!! I want something fun!

Haaay good luck to me when she gets to big school! Anyway, it's getting harder and harder to entertain her these days so I'm thankful for blogs and YouTube for giving me lots of ideas. My daughter loves mixing ingredients and as you know, I need a lot of help in the kitchen department. That's why when I saw this video she was watching, I knew instantly that we can make it since 1) it looked super easy, 2) all the ingredients were something I had on hand, and of course 3) who doesn't love playdough?

This recipe makes one (1) cup/color of dough:
- 1 cup flour
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1/2 tbsp. canola or vegetable oil
- 3/8 cup salt
- food coloring

Put 1/4 cup water in a bowl and add food coloring. I thought with the amount of food coloring I placed, the color was going to turn out dark, but it ended up being really light. So I guess you can add more drops to make the color brighter.

I also made another batch in green

Add 1/2 tbsp. oil to each color.

Use another bowl for your dry ingredients. Mix 1 cup flour and 3/8 cup salt.

1 cup flour
3/8 cup salt
stir

Add the mixture into the bowl with color.

Mix everything together really good.

There will definitely be clumps and chunky pieces so you can continue kneading with your hands or use a rolling pin until nice and smooth.

Ta-da! Surprisingly, the food coloring doesn't come off on your hands at all. And just store in a ziploc bag or air tight container to keep it from getting dry. Putting it in the fridge will also make it last longer.

This is a super fun and easy activity you can do with the whole family. I guess you can even add essential oils to give it different scents or maybe even glitter! And there's something satisfying about playing with something you knew you created from scratch. Hope you enjoy making this as much as we did! :)

Pizzeria Mozza in MBS Sinagpore

I took a quick trip to Singapore last July to spend some quality time with my best friends (2 of which are based there). I've been to Singapore many times before but I never get tired of it. In fact, hubby and I would want to live here if we could. Anyway, the time we went was actually a long weekend since it was Eid’l Fitr or the end of the feast of Ramadan. I wouldn't actually choose this as the best time to go, but it was great for my friends since they had no work. I arrived on a Friday which was declared a holiday so there were so many people everywhere!

Our first order of business was to eat and everyone was in agreement to try the celebrity chef restaurant Pizzeria Mozza in Marina Bay Sands. If you're not familiar, it's owned by Mario Batali with Nancy Silverton and Joe Bastianich (you might know him as the former MasterChef judge) who brought the restaurant all the way from Los Angeles.

The place was obviously packed and we had to wait more than an hour and a half for a table. I asked my friends if it was always this full or just because it was a holiday, but it seems it's really a very popular restaurant any day of the week (tip: make a reservation if possible). Good thing there were many other places to see in the mall so we walked around first to pass the time.

It was almost 2pm when we were finally seated and the place was still full despite it being past lunch time already. Atmosphere was busy, bustling, and quite loud. Anyway, I later found out the Executive Chef was a Filipina named Karla Mendoza (I actually just saw a feature on her in TV Patrol the other day which reminded me to do this post hehe).

Adjacent to Pizzeria Mozza is the multi-awarded Osteria Mozza, which is the fine dining version that serves pasta and other main dishes .They're only open for dinner (5PM to 11PM) and brunch on Sundays (12PM - 12:30PM).

Anyway, being a celebrity chef restaurant, prices are a bit expensive as expected. Average cost for a pizza is about SGD$30 or P1,000. If I'm not mistaken, the size of the pizzas were about 10" (cut into 6 slices) so you could share it among 2 to even 3 people assuming you order other items. But if you're just ordering pizza and nothing else, you could easily finish the whole thing by yourself since these were thin crust.

I don't know about you but I kinda wish the menu had pictures or some English descriptions so I could visualize what I was going to order. I'm not a foodie (nor Italian) so some of the terms I couldn't understand haha! Like "al forno" means food that has been baked in an oven pala. Or "Arancine" are stuffed rice balls that are coated with breadcrumbs, "Lardo" are Italian cold cuts predominantly made from pork, and chicken wings "alla diavolo" means it's spicy. So better ask your server if you're not sure what it is on the menu.

Anyway, we were given complementary bread or more like thin and crispy crackers (placed in a paper bag) to start us off.

Then we just ordered a pizza that we each wanted to try and some appetizers to share.

Arancine alla Bolognese $15 (about Php495)
Fried squash blossoms with ricotta $16 (about Php530)
Bacon, salame, fennel sausage, pancetta, tomato & mozzarella $37 (about Php1,120)
Bone marrow al forno $18 (about Php595)
Margherita with mozzarella, tomato & basil $27 (about Php890)
Mussels al forno with salsa Calabrese $18 (about Php595)
Napolitana: tomatoes, olives, anchovies, moizzarella & fried capers $27 (about Php890)
Stracchino with rucola, basil pesto, tomato & red onion panini $22 (about Php725)
Prosciutto di Parma, rucola, tomato & mozzarella $31 (about Php1,025)

Personally, food was good but nothing amazing for me. I guess my taste buds are happy with simple food like Shakey's Hawaiian Delight pizza, which is my absolute fave haha! But that's just me! I've heard of others who absolutely loved this place and just can't stop raving about the food. I'm definitely glad I did try this place, but again quite expensive for the size of the servings. But of course, you're paying for the quality and the name right? At least I can say I've eaten in Mario Batali's restaurant na! ;p

But more importantly, I'm happy I was able to spend time with these girls! More on our Singapore escapade soon in the coming posts. :)

Frozen Toys Rescue Mission!

$

I have to thank my friend Ange for giving me this idea when she posted a photo on Facebook of her boys doing this activity. All you have to do is freeze some toys in water and and have your kids find a way to "rescue" or get them out. It looked super easy to do and something I knew my own kids would love playing!

I used small and medium sized toys which I wasn't afraid would get broken or ruined (bath toys or those Kinder Egg Surprise toys would be perfect!). I then placed them in plastic containers and filled them with water.

For smaller toys, you can put a couple of pieces per container.

I waited until the next day to take the containers out of the fridge just to make sure they were really frozen good. So if you have impatient kids, maybe you shouldn't show this to them first since they would want to keep checking the freezer every hour and then get disappointed when it wasn't done yet (like mine did ;p).

It would be nice to do this activity outdoors especially on a hot day, but you can also do it inside the house. I just got a big basin so the kids could defrost the toys without getting the floor wet.

And the blocks of ice were easy to pop out of the plastic containers too. I just turned them upside down and gave the bottom part a push, just like you would a regular ice tray.

So cool (literally)!!! ;p

You can have your kids use different "tools" to get the toys out. I just gave them forks to chip the ice. It was so fun watching them play especially when they were able to get a toy out! And they were really taking it seriously, saying things like "We have to get them out quick so they can breathe!" lol!

some of the rescued toys!

They were able to get the smaller toys out quickly but the bigger block of ice took more time. After a while, we just went outdoors and started throwing the ice on the ground haha! It did work but be careful in doing this since you might damage the toy (like the hand of this poor action figure). So again, use old toys if possible or those you wouldn't mind breaking.

I think this is a really fantastic idea and the best part is that this activity can entertain the kids for a really long time! ;p

Gardens by the Bay: Flower Dome

I've been to Gardens by the Bay in Singapore before, but wasn't able to enter the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest attractions. Good thing my friends haven't been here as well, so this was on the top of our list during my visit last July 17.

The Flower Dome replicates the cool-dry climate of Mediterranean regions like South Africa, California and parts of Spain and Italy and is home to a collection of plants and flowers from all over the world. We went there on a Friday, which was also a holiday (Eid’l Fitr or the end of the feast of Ramadan) so there were a lot of people. Hirap tuloy mag picture! ;p

Standard admission, which also includes entry to Cloud Forest, was SG$28 (for adults). This is really not bad at all especially if you really take your time going around and spend a few hours here. Opening hours are from 9AM to 9PM daily, but we were able to enter at 6PM already since we had merienda pa. Good thing there was still plenty of sunlight left since it really is better to see the place in the daylight.

During the time we went, there was a flower display called “Flowery Fun Times” which showcases beloved nursery rhymes. I later learned that the display always changes in the Flower Field to reflect different seasons, festivals, and themes. Like the next display for September 24 - November 10, 2015 will be the "Celebration of Chrysanthemums" for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The displays were so beautiful, but seeing all the nursery rhymes come to life made me miss my babies more! I'm sure they would have loved seeing the different characters and gorgeous flowers... But that's ok, we can always come back next time for sure! :)

Mary had a little lamb
Three little kittens
so many beautiful blooms everywhere
Old McDonald had a farm
Mary, Mary quite contrary
There was an old woman who lived in a shoe

The flowers were gorgeous, but I also enjoyed the succulent garden. From the bursts of color in the flower field, the neutral palette of the cactus plants was a refreshing change of scenery for me. Even though they all kinda looked the same, they still had their own characteristics which made them so interesting as well.

Oooh, and check out this wooden dragon! I half expected to see Daenerys from Game of Thrones to suddenly appear lol! ;p

I really enjoyed the Flower Dome and I wish we had more time to roam around. We only spent an hour here since we were rushing to go to the Cloud Forest before it became super dark. But definitely a must-see when in Singapore. I cannot wait to go back and bring my kids next time. :)

Other thoughts:
- Bring a jacket! It was really cold inside especially in some areas.
- I really wish we could have gone on a weekday and definitely in the morning. Although they open the lights when it gets a bit dark, seeing the flowers in the daylight is definitely better in my opinion. And it looks better in pictures too! :)

Gardens by the Bay: Cloud Forest

After going around the Flower Dome in Gardens by the Bay, we then moved on to the Cloud Forest which has a completely different vibe. It features plants from tropical highlands between 1,000 to 3,500 metres above sea level and a 35-metre-tall man-made mountain (the “Cloud Mountain”) covered in lush vegetation.

This spectacular waterfall (which is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall) greets you right as you enter and I was really in awe at how beautiful it was. It was also super cold in this part btw, so bring a jacket.

It was already 7:00pm when we entered and our camera and phone batteries were practically drained from all the photos we took during the day (especially from the Flower Dome). Good thing there was still a bit of sunlight left, but I would definitely recommend going here earlier to appreciate it more.

We took the elevator to the highest point and then you make your way down on foot via the "Cloud Walk", which takes you around the mountain for a closer view of the different plants and vegetation.

I have to tell you that I am TERRIFIED of heights, so this whole experience was very nerve-racking and scary for me. Even though the walkway was made of steel, I just kept imagining it breaking from all the weight of the people on it! Morbid I know haha! I couldn't even really enjoy the view or take in all the beauty of the plants since I was just walking really, really fast to get down already.

I went ahead of my friends already, but they had to call me back so we could take pictures haha! I may look calm and happy but I was really shaking inside with cold and sweaty palms. ;p

And the sides of the steel walkway were like the mesh type flooring! This took all my willpower to take a pic standing on that part where I could see all the way down! I had to conquer my fears somehow right? ;p

Just looking down made me dizzy! Beautiful views, but not for the weak-hearted like me. And I can't imagine taking my kids here with them running around, I think I might just have a heart attack lol! Maybe we'll just stick to the Flower Dome when we come back. ;p

DIY Crayon Lipsticks

My 5-year old daughter loves watching YouTube makeup tutorials and her favorite gurus are Michelle Phan, Promise Phan, and Charisma Star. She actually showed me this video of Promise Phan making her own lipsticks out of crayons, so of course we had to try it out too! :)

It's actually very easy and all you'll need are the ff:

crayons, oil, petroleum jelly, small containers

If you're wondering if this is safe, all the other videos and articles I read say it IS since crayons are made of paraffin wax which is also an ingredient used in lipsticks. And make sure you use a good brand like Crayola which is NONTOXIC.

In the video, it said to use coconut oil. But I watched other tutorials which said it was ok to use any other oil if you didn't have any coconut oil on hand. Some also didn't use petroleum jelly anymore, but I wanted to add this for more moisture and shine.

I also got these small stackable containers at Beabi which were about P50 for 3 layers (cheaper than getting the individual pots of the same size).

Anyway, choose what color you want and remove the wrapper around the crayon. Then just break the crayon into smaller pieces.

Put a teaspoon of oil and a little bit of petroleum jelly to a glass jar or bowl with your crayon pieces.

If you watch the video tutorial, you can put your glass jar in the center of a pot with water and warm it up on the stove. But an easier alternative would be to just use a microwave like we did! We just heated it for about 2 minutes and it did the trick just fine. But be careful getting it out, it's HOT!

There were still some solid crayon pieces after, so I just used a spoon to stir everything together. This will pretty much melt any solid particles for a nice, even mixture.

Then just quickly transfer it to your container.

And just pop in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes for it to set.

Tada! Here's the finished product! You can also experiment with mixing colors together to get different shades as well.

The lipsticks were sheer and glossy, but it definitely worked! Not sure about the blue and green colors though, maybe for Halloween haha! At least if you're thinking of being an alien or a ghost, now you know how to make your own lipstick. ;p

This is a great activity especially if you have a lot of broken crayon pieces around the house. So go ahead and give it a try! :)

Little Tycoons Playhouse

My kids were invited to a playdate at Little Tycoons Playhouse last week. To be honest, I've never heard of this place prior to the visit and I had to do a bit of research first to know where it was located.

For those in the south, Little Tycoons is located in the 2nd Level of Westgate Hub in Alabang, near S&R. The place is similar to other playhouses you would find in malls where you could leave your children for a couple of hours. What I liked about this particular establishment though is that it's designed like a mini city, which reminded me very much of Kidzania!

Instead of ball pits and slides, you will find establishments like a hospital, supermarket, restaurant, salon, bank, cafe, and a karaoke room. Personally, I like this type of play more since it promotes learning and imagination. And they can be exposed to different careers in a fun way,

Rates for kids are P200/hour and P400/unlimited time. Adults are P50 each if you want to enter the playhouse too. They also offer a membership pass for P3,500 which is good for 10 unlimited plays.

Unless you're really on a tight schedule, just get the unlimited pass since one hour is really bitin for the kids. We spent 3 hours there and we had to really plead and convince the kids that we'll just be back next time, otherwise I think they could have spent all day there!

If you're thinking of leaving your kids there, you register with a thumbprint, and only the authorized adult can bring the child out. Although there isn't really anywhere else to go in the building itself, so me and the other mommies just spent the whole time with the kids inside the playhouse. The nearest place would probably be S&R if you want to grab a bite to eat or do some grocery shopping first.

Cubbyholes for your shoes. Kids and adults must wear socks inside.
seating area for the adults inside the playhouse

I believe they just opened last April so you can tell the place is still new. Toys and equipment are clean and in good condition. They also had a lot of Melissa and Doug brand toys. What I especially loved is how they have costumes and accessories in each room so they can really fit into their different roles like a chef, a doctor, or even a rock star.

The size of the place was also just right for me. It was big enough for the kids to run around, but small enough for us adults to see everything from where we were seated. And I think the fact that it's not located in a mall is a plus since there weren't so many people. There were only about 10-15 kids when we were there and it was the weekend.

Here's a closer look at the different rooms:

the bank with ATM machines and computer
working hard for the money (laptop wasn't working though)
love the cute kimonos and slippers in the Japanese resto, one of their favorite rooms
super cute and good quality toys!
the doctor is in
foot spa or blow dry?
grocery shopping
produce
the grocery carts are so cute
The videoke room also had DVDs like Inside Out. It was a bit hot in the room though.
going crazy and wacky!
tea time
my little baker

They also had one working car which most of the kids (especially the boys) were fighting over. I saw two other cars outside but they seemed to be broken. It was also quite hard driving the car around because the space was a bit limited. I had to follow my kid to make sure he didn't hit anything or anyone.

If you ask me, it was really worth it since the kids had so much fun! Even though the place was small, they seem to never run out of things to do and play with. Btw, you can book the entire place for birthday parties and events. So make sure to check their FB page in advance for announcements on when the playhouse will be closed to the public for celebrations.

If you're looking for a cheaper alternative to Kidzania, this is definitely a good option. My kids can't stop raving about the place and are already bugging me to go back. :)

S.E.A. Aquarium Singapore

I've been wanting to go to the S.E.A. Aquarium in Singapore for quite some time now, and finally got a chance to visit during my trip last July.

We went on a Sunday since I was only there for the weekend, and as expected, there were a LOT of people. If you can, better to buy your tickets online since you might get discounts depending on what promos they have. Us kasi, we weren't sure if we would push through until last minute so we had to line up. Although the queue was long, it moved fast naman. :)

We entered at 4pm and spent about 2.5 hours inside (they close at 7pm). There were other exhibits right before you enter the actual aquarium but we just breezed past them. Maybe next time when we have more time.

We saw their cute stingray mascot just as we were about to enter. Good thing we were able to take a pic since the staff cut off the line right after us for break time.

Again, avoid going on a weekend if you can since there's just so much people. This was the tunnel situation when we were there, look how crowded it was! It was so hard to get a decent picture since someone is passing right in front of you every 2 seconds. And of course, harder to appreciate the place since you're getting bumped left and right. Can you imagine how relaxing it would have been without anyone there?

My friend and I had to use ninja skills to take these pics. Most of our photos had people walking right in front of the camera grrrr!

I've been to Ocean Park in Hong Kong and also Manila Ocean Park and usually the underwater tunnel is the highlight of the place. But here in S.E.A. Aquarium, that tunnel is just a small part of so much more! The place was so big with so many marine life and species that I've never seen before. It was the most amazing aquarium I've been to and worth every penny. Seriously, you can't even compare this to Manila Ocean Park because it's on a whole other level.

Too bad I forgot my camera so these pics were just taken from my iPhone. So I don't think they even do justice to the beauty of the place and all the creatures we saw.

a unicorn fish
glow in the dark
say cheese!
this was one of my favorite aquariums because the fish were so colorful
through the looking glass
we found Nemo and Dory!
this fish was huge and looked like a rock

I was already happy with everything we've seen but then we walked into Open Ocean experience which is the HUGE panoramic aquarium. I was so in awe with the size and magnitude of it as well as all the sea creatures inside. It was just amazing.

check feeding schedules in advance if you can
kiddie area where they can sit and color

I could have sat there and just watched the fish swim around all day. We definitely need to come back on a weekday and much earlier next time to maximize the experience.

The jellyfish attraction was beautiful and also a favorite of mine. There's just something magical about these creatures and so relaxing to just watch them move around.

There's also a souvenir shop when you exit but of course, quite expensive. I ended up buying a magnet though to add to our refrigerator collection.

S.E.A. Aquarium is definitely a must see attraction when in Singapore. It's a place the whole family will really enjoy. I can't wait to go back with my kids so they can see all the marine life here.

A trip to IKEA Singapore (plus shopping loot)

When I travel, I try to drop by an IKEA if I can since I just can't get enough of their stuff! I've already visited their Singapore branch in Tampines when I was there a few years ago, so I was happy to check out their other store in Alexandra this time.

Loved this new NIPPRIG collection, a collab with local producers in Vietnam and Indonesia. Those pops of green are beautiful!

If I could only bring home an entire chair or kitchen set without having to pay for huge shipping fees! How I wish they'd just open an IKEA store here already in Manila already.

Of course, this is where I spent the most time - the decors!

fabric
shower curtains

I was also dying to eat at their restaurant, but we had lunch plans somewhere else. Next time na lang. ;p

And finally, here's some of the stuff I ended up getting:

shower curtains in cute prints
hand towel
tablecloths
baking stuff for kids
mini plastic cups
play tent and tunnel
yummy hazelnut chocolates

Bornga Korean BBQ (VivoCity, Singapore)

During my last trip to Singapore with friends, we spent more time eating than doing anything else. One of the restaurants we tried was this Korean BBQ place called Bornga in VivoCity Mall.

Helmed by Korean celebrity chef, Mr, Jong Won Paik, Bornga has branches all over Asia and the USA. I did some research and apparently, they do have a branch here in the Philippines located in Alphaland Makati.

love the placemats which give you info on the food and how to eat it
complementary veggies that you wrap the meat with

We just ordered different types of meat and the server cooked it for us. The meat was so tender and flavorful. I have to say that this is probably my favorite Korean restaurant so far! Everything was just so delicious. I also like that the exhaust fans were strong so we didn't end up smelling like smoke after the meal.

We also ordered other stuff like chapchae, Korean pancake, and some side veggies which complemented the meat perfectly.

I really enjoyed it here so I'm glad they do have a branch here in Manila. If you want to check it out, visit their FB page at www.facebook.com/BorngaMakati for more details.

Housewives in Hong Kong

I just came back a few days ago from a trip to Hong Kong with my good friends. We're all housewives, so we have to thank our husbands for allowing us to take this mini vacation while they take care of the kids. ;p

We were all so giddy at the airport pa lang because we couldn't believe this trip had finally pushed through. And we love traveling with our families, but of course it's different when you're with your kids - feeding them, entertaining them, taking them to the bathroom, making sure you have everybody's travel documents, etc. Typical mom stuff! Or the fact that we didn't have strollers or huge baby bags with us. We all felt so liberated haha!

What was funny is that we didn't have any planned itinerary for this trip. But it was also nice because there was no pressure on us. Anything goes! Like when we took the Star Ferry from Central to Tsim Tsa Tsui. Fare was just $2.50 each and you get to enjoy a lovely view of the city from the boat.

Funny moment - we ate at McDonald's one time and my friend ordered 2 pieces BBQ McWings for $11.50 (about P70). We couldn't stop laughing when she got her order because the chicken pieces were so SMALL (it looked big in the picture kasi)! Wala pang rice yan unlike here. So warning if you're gonna eat in McDo Hong Kong, just get a burger or the nuggets instead! hahaha! ;p

We also had a lot of misadventures traveling in the city. We probably took every mode of transportation - the ferry, bus, train, and taxi! Admittedly, we're all not very good at directions and let our husbands take charge when we travel with them. So now that it's just us, we were a bit clueless at first haha! There was even one time we just decided to use Uber since we were hopelessly lost hehe! ;p

these magnets are HILARIOUS!

And in typical fashion, we had to do last minute shopping! We had already checked-in our luggage and decided to go to the Disney store at the airport while waiting to board our flight. I wasn't planning on buying anything but they had an amazing promo on some items for 50-70% off!

Cute Tsum Tsum characters! Not on sale though ;p

We ended up buying so much stuff since it was really sulit! Like this Star Wars backpack (which lights up) was originally HK$228 and the Princess backpack was HK$215. Less 70% it became about P410 and P390 respectively. Mas mura pa sa SM!

This Olaf stuff toy / backpack became about P300 after discount.

And my best buys were probably these costumes which were marked down to HK$99 (about P600 each). Perfect for Halloween and again cheaper pa than SM! These were the only ones on sale aside from Sully and Princess Sofia though. Can you believe the original price of the Snow White dress was almost HK$600?! What a steal!

What a super fun, refreshing, bonding trip! Like we always say, happy wife = happy life right? haha! Thank you again to our dear husbands for holding down the fort while we were gone. We super missed you and we're so glad to be back! :)
