Our staycation at Fairmont Hotel Makati

For my birthday last August, we just decided to book an overnight stay at a hotel, which the kids really love.

Good thing I found out about a promo for BPI cardholders (BPI Gold MasterCard, BPI SkyMiles Platinum MasterCard, BPI Amore Visa, BPI Amore Platinum Visa and BPI Corporate MasterCard) where they are entitled to 50% OFF on best available rates on weekends at Fairmont Hotel in Makati (available from August 1 to October 31, 2014). Since it was also my birthday month during our stay, they also offered a free upgrade to the next room category.

I booked a Deluxe King Corner Room which amounted to P6,436.50 after the discount. The next room category was the same room size (40 square meters), the only difference was that we now had access to the Fairmont Gold Lounge for breakfast and snacks.

happy hotel kids
he loves the fluffy bed!
checking out the Makati view
TV and desk area
mini bar
bath tub
separate toilet and shower area
they spent more time in the bath tub than in the pool!

I really loved the pool area of this hotel. And even though it was the weekend, it didn't get crowded at all.

lounging around
shallow area for the kids
sunbathing Skyler ;p
I really loved these lounge chairs on the pool. And this part was also shallow so the kids could splash around here too.

Even though the hotel is right across from Landmark and Greenbelt, we didn't even leave the hotel anymore since we had such a fun and relaxing time. Hopefully we can book another stay here before the promo ends. :)

like a boss!

Food Galore at the Fairmont Hotel Gold Lounge

During our staycation at Fairmont Hotel, we were upgraded to a Gold room, which meant we now had access to their exclusive lounge also on the same floor. The Gold Lounge served breakfast and snacks, plus unlimited tea, coffee, juices and soft drinks the whole day!

At first, we were just planning to head over to Landmark or Greenbelt (which was right next door) for merienda. But after checking the food at the lounge, we realized that we didn't even need to leave the hotel anymore!

Their Afternoon Tea (2pm - 4pm) offered different types of pastries and breads.

cakes and tarts
sandwiches
snack time before swimming
lovely view of the pool area from the lounge

Their Hors D’oeuvres (6pm - 8pm) featured different types of cheese, nuts, salad, salmon, and maki. We were planning to have dinner in the mall after, but then we got so full already from all the food!

The best part for hubby was their selection of complimentary alcoholic beverages! Heaven daw lol! ;p

In fact, they were still offering pastries and desserts from 9pm - 12am! But we honestly couldn't eat anymore that we had to skip that part na hehe!

Their Deluxe Continental Breakfast (6am - 11am) had different types of fresh juices, yogurts, cereals, cold cuts, breads and pastries. It wasn't as large a selection as that of other hotel buffets, but it was still pretty good. :)

Main dishes were: Native Longganisa, Bacon, Smoked Bangus, Garlic Fried Rice, Beef Tapa, Pork Sausage, Potato Parmesan, and Buttered Vegetables.

Then you could order whatever type of egg you want, then they serve it to you beautifully plated with sidings too. :)

We super enjoyed our stay that hubby and I agreed to book a Gold room next time just so we can have access again to the lounge! Based on the rates, the difference of a Deluxe room (without lounge) to a Gold room is about P3k. I think that's sulit na considering all the food and drinks you can have, right? I seriously think we gained 5 pounds on this staycation from all the eating we did! Can't wait for the next one. ;p

DIY Fruit Pops

My kids are picky when it comes to food so I try to think of ways to make it more interesting for them. Miley and Sabe are not so fond of fruit so I thought of making these cute popsicles which are fun and healthy at the same time. They're so easy to make and your kids will enjoy eating them too!

Just choose whatever fruits you like and cut them up into little pieces. I had kiwi, pineapple, papaya, and oranges.

Then fill your popsicle mold with fruits all the way to the top. Miley even had fun dividing the fruits, making sure each mold had equal amounts. :)

Then pour enough water or juice into each mold to cover the fruit. I used coconut water, but I'd like to try using a different juice next time (maybe orange or dalandan?). I guess depends also on the combination of fruits you used and what would taste good with it.

Then insert the popsicle sticks into the molds and place in the freezer until solid.

It was a bit hard getting the popsicles out of the mold though! I had to wait a few minutes and make it melt a little since it was really stuck at first. But it was so exciting to see all the frozen fruits! So pretty and refreshing to look at. :)

The kids were so excited to eat it, even little Skyler had a bite! :)

This really is the perfect treat to cool off especially when the weather is really hot, don't you think? Fun, fresh and fruity! :)

Divisoria Day

I finally had a chance to go to Divisoria with the mission of buying prizes and giveaways for Skyler's 1st birthday party! It's all the way in January next year but I don't want to go there when the Christmas season really kicks in. I'm sure it will be packed with more people plus the prices will definitely go up.

We made sure to get there bright and early to avoid traffic and get good parking. We got there at 7:30am and parked in Lucky Chinatown Mall. Although take note that parking here is quite expensive! We didn't know it was P50 for the first 3 hours, then P20 per succeeding hour. We ended up paying P110 since we went home at 1pm na! Well, it was also my first time there so I was excited to check it out.

The mall opens at 10am so we went first to 168 mall which is just a short walk from there. As usual, I got so overwhelmed with all the cute stuff, especially notebooks, book wrapping papers, stamp sets, wallets and other trinkets I know I don't need but just want to have!!!

After, we headed back to Lucky Chinatown Mall and we passed by some party supplies. Everything you need you really can find here in Divisoria! There were so many to choose from, nakakaloka! ;p

On the way home, we were able to pass by other stationery stalls and as usual, I couldn't resist all the cuteness! Bought Christmas gifts as well here. :)

Sorry wasn't able to take note of the pasilyo numbers. But you can really just find practically the same items in the different stalls. Just go around and you're bound to stumble on what you're looking for. :)

Lucky Chinatown Mall is really nice btw! I wasn't able to take pics inside, but everything's still so new and there are lots of stores and restaurants to choose from. I think I can convince hubby to go back with me to Divi and he can just wait for me here and watch a movie or something hehe. I definitely feel bitin and I think I'll have to plan another trip here this October. Will post my shopping loot soon! ;p

Arriving in Korea

Here's my first post from our Korea trip last month. Like I said before, this was a business trip for hubby and I just tagged along. These are really the best kind of trips in my opinion since I don't have to worry about booking hotels or transportation since it's provided for already. Plus, may per diem pa si hubby so sulit talaga! ;p

It was so hard for me leaving the kids behind especially baby Skyler. But I was also excited to travel with hubby and spend quality time together. Funny nga coz everyone was commenting and joking us, naku baka baby no.4 na yan ha! Made in Korea! Haha sorry to disappoint, pero wala! ;p

ready for our adventure

It was my first time to ride PAL's new Airbus 330 and their business class was so nice. The chairs recline to a full lying down position (180°) so it was so comfortable to sleep!

They also gave out iPads since this plane doesn't have TVs anymore. All the movies, shows, and even games are loaded here already.

After 3.5 hours, we landed in Incheon and finally in Korea!

Their airport is so big we even took a short train ride to get to immigration. When we got out, there were so many ladies in traditional costume welcoming passengers for the different tour groups. I couldn't resist and just had to take a photo with some of them. :)

Incheon Airport

We were booked at the Golden Seoul Hotel which was about 40 minutes from the airport. The location was convenient since it was just a few minutes walk to the nearest train station (Yeomchang). There was also a huge Daiso at the station which was always my last stop before going back to the hotel.

The hotel staff was also very helpful and spoke English well. I was able to ask them to put my ice packs in their hotel freezer so I could bring my breastmilk home

The cons would be that it's quite far from the major attractions in the city. There weren't also anything interesting around the area. We would spend a total of about an hour on the train (plus walking and transferring pa to different lines which could get confusing!). I also didn't bother venturing out on my own since I was scared of getting lost. Whereas if we were somewhere like in Myeondong, we would have saved a lot more time commuting. Plus I could have just walked around and gone shopping when hubby was at work (pero more gastos din hehe).

The hotel is big and the rooms are nice in my opinion. The room they gave us even had a queen sized and single bed (kasya pa isa! ;p). The bed and pillows were super soft, especially the comforter which was so fluffy! It made it so much harder to get up early in the morning. :)

There was wi-fi and also a plasma TV, although there were only a few English channels (2 movie channels and the rest were news like CNN and BBC).

I also found the bathroom nice and clean. There was a bathtub and also a high-tech toilet with temperature settings. The seat warmer was a winner lol! ;p

Buffet breakfast was also included in their restaurant. They had bread, cereals, and fruits, but the main dishes were the same every single day. I ended up eating the same thing which was fried rice, bacon, sausage, potato and eggs. By the last day, I was so sawa na, I ended up eating out na lang hehe. ;p

What was nice is they had a few restaurants and a convenience store right across the hotel. We ate here on our first night after arriving from the airport, and also bought snacks and drinks.

no English so just point to the picture hehe ;p
my first meal in Korea, Bulgogi!

Stay tuned for the next series of Korea posts! :)

Seoul, Korea: Trick Eye & Ice Museum

$

We explored Hongdae on our first day and to be honest, going to the Trick Eye Museum wasn't part of our plans. I've already seen pictures of other people's trips there so I felt I already saw what there was to see. But we happened to be within the vicinity and decided to just check it out.

The entrance fee was 15,000 won or about P650 (child: 12,000 won). Since it looked interesting enough (and there were signs that said it was ranked No. 1 among museums in Seoul on TripAdvisor), we decided to give it a shot.

The admission fee also included entrance to the Ice Museum as well.

Before entering, there was an area to one side where you can take pictures for free. So if you're on a budget, you can still experience the Trick Eye Museum and have some cool photos without paying for anything. :)

Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Starry Night
Kung Fu!
riding a rickshaw
giddy-up!

Finally, we entered the museum. Honestly, we enjoyed it since it was really fun acting and making silly poses. We took turns taking each other photos, but if you're alone or would want couple shots without having to ask others to take your pics, then you better have a tripod with you hehe.

There weren't that much people in the museum with us, but you have to line up and wait your turn in other areas. Sometimes, we'd just skip some pictures since other people would take forever! ;p

What's also nice is there are sample photos on the wall so you know how your picture is supposed to look like. Anyway, here are some of our wacky and cute shots. Dapat may acting powers para believable ang pics lol! :)

To exit the museum, you go inside the Magic Mirror Room which is a super confusing maze! It was really trippy and it took us a couple of tries before we finally got out hehe. ;p

Then, we headed over to the Ice Museum. We were each given a thin raincoat to wear, which was actually pretty useless in the -2 degree temperature haha!

The Ice Museum is really small and freezing cold! I honestly wanted to get out as soon as we entered considering we were dressed for summer. But of course, I just sucked it up in order to take some pictures lol!

I couldn't believe hubby even went on this slide! I couldn't even think straight anymore after a few minutes haha! We probably only spent about 5 minutes inside since that was all we could take.

When we got back home, I couldn't wait to show Miley and Sabe our pics and they kept laughing at all our silly poses! So yeah, I was glad we did go here since it was a fun experience in my opinion. :)

Seoul, Korea: Hello Kitty Cafe

After visiting the Trick Eye Museum, we stumbled upon the super cute Hello Kitty Cafe also in the Hongdae area. If you read my blog, you know that my daughter Miley loves Hello Kitty and it was even the theme of her 3rd birthday party. So I guess it was really meant to be since I didn't even research beforehand where this place was. I just mentioned to hubby that it would be nice if we found it, and then it was right there! I mean, how could you not miss this very pink building in the middle of the street right? :)

We just had to go inside and have dessert even though we were already so full from lunch. And it was literally cuteness overload!

As expected, everything inside was pink and screamed Hello Kitty, down to their food and drinks.

coffee and smoothies
cakes and waffles
Hello Kitty-shaped mousse cakes
Hello Kitty water
latte
Hello Kitty furniture and merchandise

We decided to sit at the 2nd floor, which was more spacious and again, very pink. I could just imagine my daughter Miley going crazy here. It was like a Hello Kitty playhouse all blown up.

We ordered a Choco Banana Waffle (4,500 won or about Php200) and a cup of water (1,000 won or about Php45). We actually didn't drink the water and instead brought it home for Miley as a souvenir hehe. ;p

There were also writings all over the walls with messages, notes and names of people who've been here. I think this is really common in Korea since there were also a number of other places we visited with lots of dedications written all over too.

Of course, we had to leave our mark as well - plus a little message for Miley (we definitely have to come back with her next time) and our boys. Good thing I had a pentel pen in my bag hehe. Always prepared lol! :)

If you're a fan of Hello Kitty or just want to have some coffee or dessert in the Hongdae area, then you definitely have to drop by. :)

Seoul, Korea: Exploring Dongdaemun

We decided to go to Dongdaemun on our 2nd day in Korea. Regarding how to get there, I  just left all the navigating to hubby since I was completely clueless and totally confused when it came to riding their subway. He downloaded this free app on his iPhone (Seoul Subway - Map & Route Planner) and it was a big help with letting us know where to go. But there were still times we got lost, especially since we had to transfer lines a couple of times. ;p

The first thing that we saw when we exited the train station was this structure called the Heunginjimun Gate. Usually called Dongdaemun, this gate was built in 1397 and is the East Gate of Seoul Fortress. I like how it was right in the middle of all these modern buildings and malls, which gives you a sense of history and a glimpse of the past.

Heunginjimun Gate
information about the gate

Just across the street was Dongdaemun Shopping Complex and Town. This place was really huge with 5 buildings in total.

However, this place only sold fabrics, textiles, accessories, wedding products, etc. If you notice the sign on the building, it says "Designers' Hub" which hubby and I thought meant designer labels haha! Un pala, for designers to buy their materials here! Toink! ;p

So off we went again, just walking around and checking out the different shopping markets and malls, which were everywhere! And of course, eating too. ;p

We also checked out Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), which is the newest (officially inaugurated on March 2014) and most iconic landmark of the Korean design industry located at the center of the Dongdaemun area. The DDP, which was designed by Zaha Hadid, serves as a key venue for design-related shows and conferences, exhibitions, and other events and gatherings, which makes this like our very own Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The DDP also has some restored parts of the Seoul Fortress like this Yigansumun Water Gate (floodgate channeling water from Namsan Mountain to Cheonggyecheon Stream and Seoul Fortress).

There were lots of interesting things inside the DDP, like this exhibit of chairs from different designers around the world.

Game of Thrones ang peg ;p

There was also a Transformers 30th Anniversary Exhibition, but there was an entrance fee of 15,000 won. I knew I wouldn't appreciate it as much as hubby, so I just waited for him outside hehe.

We then saw people lining up for another exhibit, so I asked the staff how much was the entrance fee. When she said it was free, hubby and I decided to check it out as well. Culture Chanel was an exhibit that traced the the creative landmarks in designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel's life. It was comprised of about 500 photographs, books, objects, manuscripts, archives and artworks, along with Chanel’s fashion, jewelry, watch and perfume creations.

Our day was super tiring with a mix of sightseeing, shopping, art and culture. But I definitely want to come back here because I feel bitin with the shopping part haha! I personally think I need a whole day just to properly check out all the malls and markets. :)

Dayrit's Burger & Roastbeef House, BF Paranaque

I remember Dayrit's from my childhood days because my family, especially my lola, loved this restaurant. We would frequent the branch in Buendia Ave. back then and I would always order the same thing, their hamburger steak.

This restaurant really brings back so many good memories for me, so imagine my surprise when we saw this sign while driving in BF one day. A new Dayrit's branch had opened right here in President's Ave!

Of course, we had to try it right away since we hadn't eaten in Dayrit's for a few years now. We had the whole place to ourselves since it was a weekday, or maybe since people in the area don't know about this place yet.

There were so many good things we wanted to try and order, but of course we had to have their Roast Beef and Hamburger Steak. Check out their menu below:

Special Iced Tea and Dalandan Juice
Roast Beef Plate
Hamburger Steak
coleslaw

They also have a frozen meat section...

and other Pinoy delicacies for sale.

We also had to buy their famous Chorizo Macao (P420 per kilo). Can't wait to eat this!

I'm so happy Dayrit's is now here in the south! Now we can have ultimate comfort food so close to home. Everything was really good and we will definitely be back to try their other menu items.

N Seoul Tower & Locks of Love

$

The place I was definitely most excited about visiting in Korea was the N Seoul Tower. Also known as the Namsan Tower, it is a communication and observation tower located on Namsan Mountain and marks the highest point in Seoul. It is a very popular landmark where you can see great panoramic views of the city.

We went there first thing in the morning and took the train to Myeongdong station. From there, it was about a 20 minute walk to the cable car platform which will take you to the tower. Warning though, it was an uphill climb with a couple of steep stairs. It was also hot that day (it was in the first week of September) so if you're like me who doesn't exercise, it was definitely tiring and I had to take a couple of breaks in between hehe. ;p

check HERE for more detailed directions on how to get to the cable car

We got the round-trip cable car tickets for 8,500 won each. There were quite a number of people in line and they really try to fit everyone inside the cable car. It would be ideal if you get to stay by the windows to really see the view, but we were unfortunately stuck somewhere in the middle. It was a bit claustrophobic since the car was really jam-packed and there was hardly even space to move. Good thing it was just for a few minutes...

And finally we were here! It was again more stairs and uphill walking to get to the actual tower, but it wasn't as bad anymore since we were just excited to finally get there. ;p

The first thing that we saw before getting to the tower was the Beacon Lighthouse. We actually caught a short program, which was sort of a changing of the guards ceremony.

We then noticed a small booth right across where you could wear traditional Korean outfits for free. Of course, we just had to try this out since it was one of my goals to do this on our trip. Luckily, there was a short line, but we had to wait a bit for hubby to get suited up since they only had 2 costumes for guys (and ang tagal mag picture nun mga lalaking nauna samin!). It was so fun playing dress up and I really loved wearing the hanbok which was so pretty. :)

We then quickly checked out the Pavilion and then the park grounds before finally entering the Seoul Tower.

Pavilion
park grounds right outside the tower

We got the Observation Deck Combo Package A which was 20,000 won for 2 adults and included a large bucket of popcorn and drinks. I think this was a good deal since price per person is 9,000 won so we would have paid 18,000 won anyway, which is just a small difference from the combo with snacks already. Plus, we were already starving since this was just about lunch time and the popcorn (which if I remember correctly was onion flavored) was soooo good!

We then took an elevator ride and within a few moments, we had finally reached the Observation Deck!

It was really breathtaking to see a 360-degree view of the city all the way from the top of the tower.

Each window panel had different world cities on them too. Of course, we had to find Manila! :)

souvenir shop where we bought some magnets

They also give you these tags where you can write messages and hang them on one side of the wall as a remembrance of your visit.

After leaving the tower, we headed to the Locks of Love area right outside, which was another place I was super excited to visit.

thousands of locks everywhere!

We actually forgot to bring a padlock from home, but good thing we bought one in the Daiso near our hotel for just 1,000 won. The locks they were selling at the tower were so much more expensive!

hope we can find our lock when we come back here again ;)
Our cute lock even had the word "LOVE" on the back. Awww! ;p
more locks on the other side, this time on trees

We really enjoyed our visit here in the N Seoul Tower. Definitely one of the highlights of our trip for me. :)

And before we left, we just had to leave our mark at the Beacon Lighthouse, overlooking the city. So maybe if you visit too, you can see it there. :)

Seoul, Korea: Shopping at Myeongdong

After visiting the N Seoul Tower, we then headed to Myeongdong for some retail therapy!

cute graffiti wall in the area

Myeongdong is located in central Seoul and is a really a shopping paradise featuring a mix of local and international brands.

Here you'll find all the Korean cosmetic brands side by side, and in practically every corner! Plus, everything was on sale, with lots of buy 1 take 1 deals. I have to admit, it was really overwhelming for me since I was so confused what was the best product, brand, shade to get. I think I must have stepped inside each make-up store at least 2-3 times, just scoping out and comparing stuff. But what's nice is that if I suddenly decided that I finally wanted something, I was sure to find that store again because they're really everywhere! ;p

Ended up buying a little something from these beauty shops. I got some lipsticks, nail polish, facial wash, concealer and of course BB cream! So much cheaper than in Manila, plus love the free samples they give too. :)

All the high-street brands are also here like Forever 21, Uniqlo, Mango, Zara, etc. I couldn't help myself and ended up doing most of my shopping at H&M where I got some good stuff on sale. :)

And of course, lots and lots of street food! It was so fun just trying out different things whenever we got hungry from all the walking and shopping.

Hubby and I found this giant meatball so yummy! It was our favorite among all the street food we tried on this trip.

There were so many restaurants to choose from, but we ended up eating here since it was full of people (so we figured it must be good). Turns out Yoogane is a really popular resto in the area. :p

We ordered their Chicken Galbi fried rice, which they cooked right in the middle of our table. It was just ok for me, not something I'd want to eat again hehe. But at least I can say I've already tried it. :)

Myeongdong was pretty crowded though, especially in the narrower streets where it was hard to even stop to look at stuff. I personally think it would be quite challenging to bring small children here with you, especially if they're in strollers.

But as a shopaholic, I certainly loved the vibe of this area. If given a choice next time, I would want to book a hotel near here so I can just walk around whenever I wanted. But I'm sure, ubos ang pera lol. Hope to be back here soon! :)

Our new bed (with tufted headboard!)

$

The first major purchase hubby and I made after we got married was our plasma TV. Then, we bought our bed hehe. ;p We just wanted something simple and classic, so this is what we ended up buying in SM.

Back when this was the only piece of furniture we had, when we were still staying at my mom's place. Sarap, walang kalat!

It held up fine all these years, but as the kids got older, they learned to jump on the bed. And they loved jumping on it until I noticed a couple of months ago that there was already a huge crack on the bottom of the frame:

broken right in the middle!

Hubby tried to fix it, but as you can see, he didn't do a very good job hehe! He used electrical tape and picture frame hangers haha! It was one jump away from fully collapsing so we decided to just buy a new bed.

This time, I knew I wanted a bed with a tufted headboard. Aside from it looking so nice and elegant, I wouldn't have to worry about the kids hitting their heads on the frame anymore (which has happened so many times!).

We went to SM Our Home and found this bedframe (queen-sized) which was on sale from P29,950 down to P23,960. And there was an additional 10% off since we got it during the mallwide sale and we had an SM Advantage Card. Plus, it was payable in 6 months, interest-free! Yey SOLD! :)

You can even customize the color of the upholstery (they showed us swatches like black, brown, red, blue) but in the end, we decided to go with what we saw on display which was this grayish color. With the new taller height of the headboard, my pole wire decal is a little bit covered though. Still thinking if I should keep it or just hang something on the wall. What do you think? :)

Anyway, super love these studs that run along the sides too!

And check out the sturdy base! I think it has enough support for the kids to jump on all they want haha! ;p The only cons would be that there's no space to put anything underneath (I used to have some orocans under the old bed for extra storage) and it's now harder to get all the dirt and dust under the bed (hirap walisin!) But it looks so nice so parang tiis-ganda na lang diba! :)

I think in the end, I'm kinda happy the kids broke the old bed so we could get this new one. Super happy with it! And hope it lasts a lot longer than 5 years! :)

Seoul, Korea: Gyeongbokgung Palace & Changing of the Guards

There are five grand palaces in Seoul built during the Joseon Dynasty, but we just chose to visit just one, which wasGyeongbokgung Palace. To be honest, I personally think they all kinda look the same anyway so why not just go to the biggest and regarded as the most beautiful, right? ;p

We took the train to Gyeongbokgung station and the first thing we saw when we exited the subway was the National Palace Museum of Korea. Too bad it was closed though, we would have loved to take a look inside (admission is free btw).

National Palace Museum of Korea

Right in front of the museum was the palace and we just had to walk a bit to finally reach the entrance.

We also made sure to arrive before 10am which was perfect since we were able to catch the Changing of the Guards ceremony, which happens outside the palace (I believe this takes place every hour until 3pm).

There were a lot of people, so make sure to position yourself in the front to be able to have a good view. But there's lots of space anyway, since the grounds are so huge. This is definitely a must-see since it's a great opportunity to experience a traditional ceremony which is reenacted exactly as in the olden times.

We went there on a Monday since it said online that the palace was closed on Tuesdays. There is an entrance fee of 3,000 won but it was apparently a holiday when we went (Autumn Harvest Festival) so entrance was FREE! But the downside was that there were no free guided tours that day.

Heungnyemun or second inner gate. This was also the main entrance to the palace grounds.
Ready to do some serious walking... ;p

Gyeongbokgung was the main royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty. It was the first of the five palaces to be built and you can see the former offices of the state government, living quarters of past kings and queens, and historic artifacts inside.

The first building we saw was Geunjeongjeon which was the main hall of the palace. I believe this building was used for the king's affairs of state, including meetings and receptions with foreign guests.

Geunjeongjeon
this was the inside of the hall

After that, we just kinda wandered off wherever. I was just looking for nice spots (and there were a lot!) and making kulit hubby to take my pics haha!

Everything kinda looks the same for me though haha! But I loved taking pics of all the intricate details especially the rooftops. So pretty and colorful!

Saw a lot of people taking pics by this giant poster of Jewel in the Palace, which I guess was shot here.

a map of the palace grounds

The whole palace grounds is really huge and sprawling, but I guess we didn't realize just how big it was until we reached this part. You couldn't even see any houses, just land and trees (and mountains in the background). And it was quite a long walk to get to the other compounds. I can imagine back in the olden days when you wanted to visit someone or even give an urgent message. You really need horses to get to one place to the next!

I definitely want to come back in spring or fall so see all the pretty flowers`and autumn colors :)
more day-off pics lol! ;p
fermented pastes and sauces in clay pots in one part of the palace
Hyangwonjeong, a two story hexagonal pavilion built on a small island in the middle of a lake
Gyeonghoeru, an open two story pavilion on a surrounding man-made pond, used for banquets and entertainment of foreign guests

We probably spent a little over 2 hours exploring the palace. We were already exhausted from all the walking (I guess because the weather was also a bit hot) and I think there were a lot we still didn't get to see. Hubby was the one who wanted to check out more places, but I was already happy with all our pictures and was already dying from hunger haha! ;p

We exited through the Gwanghwamun Gate which is the main gate of Gyeongbokgung. We left at about 12 noon so we were able to catch the hourly Changing of the Guards ceremony again, although it was now concentrated in this front area.

Right across the Gwanghwamun Gate is Gwanghwamun Square, where you can see the statues of King Sejong and Admiral Yi-Sun-Shin. There is another exit from the train (Gwanghwamun Station, Subway Line 5) which I believe lets you walk out right here in the square itself. So maybe if you like, you can choose to exit here instead of where we did, so you can take pics with the statues before entering the palace.

In our case, I was already soooo hungry that we decided to just skip going here and head straight to Insadong for lunch.

I'll be posting about Insadong and Bukchon Hanok Village next so stay tuned! :)

Spooktacular Halloween at Robinsons BF

We usually just go trick or treating in our village for Halloween and skip the events in malls or other establishments. But I happened to find out that there was going to be a free Halloween activity in Pergola Mall last October 29, so I thought I'll just register the kids just in case.

We almost ended up not going though, since Miley was tinatamad and Sabe woke up in a very bad mood from his afternoon nap. But I managed to get them dressed and figured we'll just check it out for fun. There was no pressure since it was a free event anyway and if they really didn't want to participate, then I'll just go grocery shopping hehe.

There were already a lot of people when we arrived. This was the first time Miley and Sabe attended something like this so they were a bit apprehensive at first (I decided not to bring Skyler na lang since I didn't know how long the event would last).

I was honestly after the trick or treating, but a big part of the activity was the costume contest. It said in the flyer that they were picking 3 winners for the scariest costume. So there were a lot of headless people, bloody corpses, and monsters everywhere! Miley and Sabe were freaked out at the start and were begging me to go home! We had to bring them first to the toy store to calm them down haha. :)

For their costumes, I just dressed them in existing outfits we had at home. I didn't want them to wear their real costumes since that was reserved for October 31. Sabe has so many superhero costumes so he just went as Thor. Miley had this dress for quite some time now, I just added wings and a floral headband to make her look like a flower fairy. But you should have seen some of the costumes there, career talaga!

Thor and Flower Fairy

The event started with a Scooby-Doo puppet show, which the kids found really entertaining (but was super corny for me haha!).

There was also a Ghostbusters puppet show (but in Tagalog) after. I wasn't even paying attention anymore and thought the kids weren't even listening. Turns out they really enjoyed it!

watching the puppet show

After that, it was time for the costume contest. They were calling the kids in groups of 10 up the stage. Good thing I registered early so our number was 28 and 29. At least we didn't have to wait so long since we were in the 3rd batch (I believe there were about 100 kids). I was afraid Miley and Sabe would have stage fright so I asked my mom to accompany them.

When it was their turn, I was so proud since they both said their names and who they were dressed as! Sabe was so funny when the host asked where Thor's hammer was. He held up his hand and said it was invisible haha! :)

waiting for their turn
waving to Mommy

I really wanted to wait until the end for the trick or treat, but we had to leave since we had to go to my brother-in-law's birthday dinner. We didn't even find out who won the costume contest! But good thing the kids were able to get their loot bags which consisted of some candy and a small toy. It wasn't much, but the kids were so happy already (babaw ng kaligayahan hehe)!

I was so happy we ended up going since it was a new experience for the kids. And it got them even more excited for our Halloween trick or treat! :)

Happy Halloween 2014

If you're following me on Instagram (@mrsmommyholic), then you've probably already seen what the kids' costumes were for Halloween.

You also know that I've always dressed Miley and Sabe as a pair - Dora & Boots in 2011, Lilo & Stitch in 2012, and Peter Pan & Tinkerbell in 2013 (wherein hubby and I also joined in as Captain Hook and Mr. Smee!)

Now that we have a new addition to the family with baby Skyler, I was really excited at first thinking what theme we could do this year. I had a couple of ideas (The Incredibles would have been perfect right? ;p) but then Miley and Sabe are already at that age wherein they want to do things their way (and they can get pretty stubborn too!). I finally decided to forego having a theme this year and just let them be who they wanted. :)

Miley had asked her dad to buy her a Merida costume a couple of months ago when he was in the States. We made her choose among all the Disney princesses and I was really surprised when she kept insisting she wanted Merida since I knew for a fact she had only watched the movie Brave once (and she got scared of the bear too!). But she kept saying she wanted it so hubby went ahead and bought it.

The costume wasn't cheap (about $30 I think) so I figured she might as well wear it trick or treating. But she needed a couple more things to really look like the character. Merida is best known for her wild hair, so I bought a red wig at Divisoria for P200. I also found a bow and arrow at Toys R Us for only P99! It was actually from the Juan dela Cruz toy line (remember that telenovela starring Coco Martin? lol!) but it really matched her outfit. :)

Meanwhile, hubby and I watched the Rurouni Kenshin movie trilogy and really enjoyed it! Hubby loved it so much he started watching the old Samurai X cartoons again. Sabe ended up watching with his dad and liking it as well! Good thing I was able to find a kimono in SM on sale for just P100. And we were able to buy a kiddie samurai sword in Korea which was perfect for his costume. I wanted him to have a long ponytail just like Kenshin but it was a challenge getting him to wear the hairpiece I bought. He kept saying "I don't like! I'm NOT a girl!" lol! I was able to take a couple of pics though without him noticing I clipped it already. Can you see his ponytail in the pic below? ;p And of course, I drew an X on his cheek with my eyebrow pencil to complete the look. :)

Can you tell feel na feel niya ang costume? My gosh, emote to the max! Hahaha! I didn't even tell him how to pose, this is all him! ;p

For Skyler, I really love owls so I was so happy when hubby was able to buy this costume in the States as well. It is absolutely adorable and super gigil! I thought he was going to be fussy with the costume, but I was so surprised when he was so behaved and didn't even try to remove the hoodie part in his head. And so many people took pics of him when we went trick or treating since he was just too cute! :)

Anyway, here are more pics of them in their costumes. :)

Miley as Merida
Sabe as Samurai X
Skyler as baby owl

Oh, and I sorta had a mini costume too. When Miley said she was going to be Merida, I figured I'll be her momma bear, the queen! Bought this bear hat at Metro Department Store for about P130. ;p

The kids were so excited, they could barely stand still! I couldn't even get a decent pic of the 3 of them haaay!

their best group shot!
so in character!

Finally going around trick or treating!

Hi baby Tiyanak! Miley and Sabe are terrified of this thing haha! ;p
some houses gave dirty ice cream! yum!
eating their loot
all their candy!

So it was a successful Halloween again this year! I admit, I kinda wish we did have a theme but hey, there's always next year. I actually have some ideas already so at least I have a whole year to prepare haha! ;p

Makeup Workshop with Tina Ngkaion

I was very fortunate to be invited to a makeup workshop conducted by Tina Ngkaion last October 25. It was a small class with a couple of my fellow southern bloggers, which was just perfect since Tina was really able to demonstrate how to apply makeup on everyone.

I was personally really excited to attend this class since I knew I had a lot of things to learn. I went to an all-girls Catholic school where wearing makeup was strictly forbidden. I guess this mentality carried over even when I went to college since the only thing I used back then was my Johnson's face powder, Body Shop Tea Tree Oil Concealer (which I still use until now), and ChapStick lip balm. I only started wearing (minimal) makeup when I began working and it was still pretty basic - face powder, blush and lipstick. I didn't even start filling in my eyebrows until much later on (and now that's a must for me since I have very sparse eyebrows!). I remember I also had an officemate who was very kikay and she was the one who taught me some makeup basics and how to use eyeshadow.

To be honest, I don't even buy the expensive brands of makeup. I'm okay with drugstore ones as long as it works. And I'm a bit clueless when it comes to what products to buy or how to use them. I don't even own primer or foundation or know what shade works for me. I guess it's also since I'm at home most of the time anyways so I hardly even use makeup. But of course, I've always wanted to know how to do makeup properly so I can do it myself if there's a special occasion like a wedding or event I have to attend.

We were asked to bring our own makeup kits but right off the bat, I could tell I didn't have most of the essentials. For the class, Tina taught us how to do a DAY look that could also transition to night. Anyway, I'll be posting the pics of the makeup we used and recommended by Tina so you can get an idea of what you need.

PORE PRIMER
As we get older, our pores definitely get bigger. Mine are very noticeable especially in the T-zone area and the apples of my cheeks. We learned to apply a primer first (either using a concealer brush or your fingers) to minimize the size of your pores.

the Benefit brand is obviously more expensive, but the Maybelline one works fine as well

FACE PRIMER
I don't own a primer, but now I want to buy one after seeing how the makeup goes on so much better on the skin. We used the Make Up For Ever HD Elixir and all we needed was one drop for the whole face!

COLOR CORRECTOR
As usual, this was something I'd only discovered now. A color corrector apparently helps further hide your imperfections. You use the orange shade under your eyes to conceal your eyebags, the green color is for any red areas in the face (like around the nose or pimples), while the yellow shade is for any veins.

Tina had this color corrector palette specially made abroad, but I believe you can get something similar in Suesh or Pure Beauty.

CONCEALER
Put concealer on top of the areas where color corrector was applied.

For under the eyes, apply the color corrector and concealer in an inverted triangle shape and blend outwards. See how my eyes look so refreshed after I blended everything? Dark circles gone! :)

FOUNDATION
According to Tina, if you're going to spend on makeup, make sure you do on foundation since that's the base of your whole face. She recommended Maybelline Fit Me (I'm in shade 110 Porcelain) but so far, this isn't available here locally.

LOOSE POWDER
Put loose powder under the eye area or anywhere you think makeup will fall. You can just brush this off after you apply your eye makeup.

EYEBROWS
Tweeze stray hairs and trim your eyebrows for a more defined look. Then fill them in with an eyebrow pencil. I have very thin eyebrows though, so no trimming needed for me hehe!

EYESHADOW PRIMER
Use a primer on your eyes to make the colors more intense and stay longer.

One trick Tina taught us for the perfect wing tip / cat eye is to put scotch tape on the corner of your eyes. This will give you a guide when applying the eyeshadow and eyeliner. Also apply the eyeliner from the outer eye going in.

She also taught us how to do our eyes, contour and highlight, as well as apply false eyelashes.

After applying the rest of the makeup, here's my finished look! Check out my BEFORE and AFTER. What do you think of my "no makeup" makeup look? I just love how flawless my skin looks! :)

I still have to practice more on the eyes, plus the contouring and highlighting. But for the most part, I'm happy with what I've accomplished. :)

Some more tips I learned:
- Don't put makeup with SPF at night. The sunscreen reflects the light taken in flash photos which will give your face a white glare.
- Don't put moisturizer right before applying makeup. This will make you more oily throughout the day.
- If you're acidic, get foundation 1 to 2 shades lighter since the color will darken on your face after a while.
- You can use baby wipes to remove your makeup and also to clean makeup brushes.

with Tina
everybody looking lovely all made up :)

It was such a fun afternoon and I have to say, this class has made me excited about buying and trying on makeup. I know I still have quite a lot of practicing to do but at least now I know the basics and what products to get.

An Excellent Lifestyle with Taiwan Excellence

I’m sure most of us here love shopping abroad and also go crazy when foreign brands and products become available here in the country. I think most people have a high regard for imported stuff, but we have to remember that quality is still the key.

That is why the Taiwan government is launching the Taiwan Excellence campaign for the first time here in the Philippines. Taiwan Excellence is a campaign that recognizes high-quality Taiwanese brands, guaranteeing their superior quality and value. To qualify for these awards, the products go through a rigorous screening process to ensure that they are of the highest standard and can proudly represent the unique and innovative culture of Taiwan. This campaign, which will bring in 56 top quality brands to the Philippine market, will give us Filipinos the opportunity to discover a range of Taiwanese products with the seal of quality.

The History of Taiwan Excellence
The Taiwan Excellence campaign started as part of the Ministry of Economic Affair’s (MOEA) 5 year plan in the 1980’s to raise Taiwan’s international competitiveness by supporting its local brands. Under the Image Enhancement Plan, the Taiwan Excellence Award campaign was established in 1992.  The “Taiwan Excellence” was awarded to products based on R&D, design, quality, and marketing efforts. If selected, the brands and products were allowed to use the Taiwan Excellence Seal locally and internationally.

The Awarding Process
All Taiwan based brands are eligible to be part of the campaign.  Product categories include consumer and business IT, fashion, arts and culture, sports, education, transportation, and others.

Each product is scored based on its R&D, design, quality, and marketing by an international panel of judges. Each product must score evenly in all four categories. After careful evaluation, those selected are allowed to carry the Taiwan Excellence Seal.

From among the selected products, the judges choose those who deserve the Silver and Gold Award recognition.  They will select thirty from the original winners, with only ten to be given the Gold Award, the highest recognition under the campaign, while the remaining finalists will be given the Silver Award.

I personally haven’t been to Taiwan but would definitely love to do so in the future. I think this is a great way for their country to promote their brands and also help us Filipino consumers who purchase their products. Some of the brands under the campaign include Acer, Asus, BenQ, Draytek, HCG, HTC, KingCom, KW Trio, Kymco, MSI, Silicon Power, Sym, Transcend, and others. I’m pleasantly surprised to find out some of these brands are from Taiwan since I have some of their products in our household!

I think that this awarding process is great so that us Filipinos can make educated purchases and it also helps us discover the best products they have to offer. With this campaign, we can enjoy our shopping experience further since we will be able to choose products that will give us an “Excellent Lifestyle” :)

For more information on this campaign, log on to www.taiwanexcellence.ph or check out their FB page at www.facebook.com/TaiwanExcellence.ph.

Seoul, Korea: Insadong & Bukchon Hanok Village

We were starving after exploring Gyeongbokgung Palace, so we had lunch first at Insadong. We wanted to eat Korean BBQ so we just tried the first restaurant we saw which was this one:

bbq time!
side dishes
happy tummy

After we had our fill, we then decided to go to Bukchon Hanok Village. Based on what I read online, it was just walking distance from Insadong. Well, we had a map but we were still pretty confused where to go. And again with the steep streets! Anyway, I guess I really wasn't sure what to expect from the village. Like I didn't know if there was an admission fee or anything so at first we were looking for like the main entrance.

But the thing was, Bukchon Hanok Village is a residential neighborhood where people actually live. So we were walking around not realizing that we were already there gets? To be honest, I didn't really find it that interesting. We took a couple of pics but all the streets with hanoks, or traditional Korean houses, pretty much looked the same anyway... I read some reviews where people were raving about the place saying they spent hours exploring the village. But I guess this just isn't my cup of tea.

We started to walk back to Insadong and passed by this beautiful church in the neighborhood. We went inside to pray and decided to check out the top floor which had a beautiful view of the village.

We got back to Insadong where we went souvenir shopping... The main street is Insadong-gil which has alleys on each side filled with art galleries, shops, cafes, and restaurants. We actually went inside some art galleries which was pretty interesting. Anyway, this is where we bought our pasalubongs, like t-shirts, magnets, and other trinkets.

the main road, Insadong-gil
some guy doing a bubble show on the corner of the street
the super popular ice cream snack in a tube cone
lots of street food everywhere
a free concert around the area

Anyway. this is the last of my Korean travel diary and I have to say, I'm missing Seoul so much! I definitely have to plan another trip here during the spring or autumn season so I can experience another side to this beautiful country. :)

Movies that made me cry

$

I just watched The Fault in Our Stars the other day (yes, now lang!). When it was showing in the cinemas a couple of months ago, I remember seeing so many posts on my feed about how people were bawling their eyes out and were so depressed after watching it. Obviously I haven’t read the book, so I had no idea what the story was about except that the girl was sick. But I sorta had a feeling of what was going to happen based on all the feedback I was getting (and I guessed right btw!).

Anyway, I was expecting to get all emotional while watching the movie... but it never happened for me. As in no tears. Zero. Nada. Zilch. Hubby was joking that I had a stone-cold heart, but hey, he didn’t cry either so I guess we’re perfect for each other lol! But thinking about it, maybe I just didn’t connect with the movie or wasn’t feeling the actors (I’m not such a fan of Shailene Woodley btw). Or I guess I was already anticipating too much, so in the back of my mind I was already prepared for all the sadness, gets?

But I guess I really don’t cry easily. Like I didn’t cry at my wedding or when my babies were born hehe. Those moments were filled with so much love, joy and excitement but the whole tears of happiness thing just never happens for me!

But anyway, back to the point. It got me thinking of the movies that have really struck a chord in me and made me cry (and still gets me choked up whenever I watch it again). Because believe it or not, there have been a few. So before you think I really am a heartless person, here’s the list in no particular order, with the scenes that have really stood out. ;p

*SPOILERS below, but these are all old movies anyway, which I hope almost everyone have seen ;p

The Little Mermaid
My favourite Disney movie EVER! Even when I watch it today, the last scene where Ariel says goodbye to her father King Triton and all her family and friends in the ocean gets me crying every single time. And I just love all the songs!

Tangled
My next favourite Disney movie. The part with the lanterns is just magical. And when Rapunzel is finally reunited with her real parents and they don’t even say anything and just hug. Cryfest!

A Walk to Remember
My favourite Nicholas Sparks movie. I remember hubby and I watched this back in college and he also shed a few tears here haha! So many moments got me emotional, especially their wedding. I also read the book after and ended up crying even more!

The Land Before Time
I think everyone I know has cried at this movie! Ang bigat! Just hearing the song “If We Hold On Together” gets me emotional! I also love the character Cera (the triceratop) and how she acts so tough. But then there’s this part I can’t forget where she keeps distancing herself from the others but then when nightfall came, she eventually went to Littlefoot’s side to snuggle and keep warm. That moment just got me!

Monsters Inc.
The last part when Mike reveals he has rebuilt Boo’s door and then Sulley uses the piece he has to complete it. Then he enters the door and finally reunites with Boo. Awww...

Legends of the Fall
One of my favourite movies of ALL time. It doesn’t hurt that Brad Pitt stars in this too. This is such a heavy drama so there’s definitely lot of emotional scenes. A part that always gets me choked up is when Brad Pitt finally goes home after so many years and his dad Anthony Hopkins already had a stroke and can’t speak. So he writes “AM HAPPY” on his blackboard around his neck. Huhuhu! Also the part where Brad Pitt’s wife is accidentally killed. So depressing!

Jerry Maquire
One of my absolute favourite Tom Cruise movies! The best part for me was when Cuba Gooding Jr. gets injured but then recovers and dances on the football field. And I love the part when everyone is trying to interview him after, and then he spots Jerry and they hug each other crying. Another fave part is the end when Cuba appears on a talk show then he gets surprised when he finds out Jerry has secured him a multi-million dollar contract. Such a feel good movie!

Rudy
I love this movie which was based on a true story. Underdog Rudy (Sean Astin) beat the odds and won the football game for his school. And the best part for me was when his teammates carried him on their shoulders chanting “Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!” Such an inspirational film.

Scent of a Woman
The part where Chris O’Donnell (Charlie) stops Al Pacino from committing suicide and when Al Pacino arrives to defend Charlie in the disciplinary hearing. I developed a major crush on Chris O’Donnell here and idolized Al Pacino for his acting skills (I believe he won the Oscar for Best Actor).

Toy Story 3
This is actually my least favourite out of all the Toy Story movies since I feel the story is a bit darker compared to the first two. But the last part when Andy finally lets go and passes the toys to their new owner, Bonnie, and then they play together with all the toys is so touching. I think we can all relate with outgrowing our childhood toys that we’ve loved so much throughout the years.

Deep Impact
I remember Armageddon and Deep Impact where shown almost at the same time. A lot of people loved Armageddon especially that scene where Bruce Willis sacrifices himself for Ben Affleck (nope, didn’t cry there). Personally, I preferred Deep Impact, where I got all emotional with the tsunami scene and when the rescue crew decides to undertake a suicide mission and says goodbye to their families on video call.

City Of Angels
This movie got me really depressed after! I just could not accept how Nicolas Cage finally becomes human and then Meg Ryan dies the next day! And this line: “I would rather have had one breath of her hair, one kiss of her mouth, one touch of her hand, than eternity without it.. Just one.” Haaaaay my heart just breaks! Lesson of the story, don’t ride a bike with your eyes closed and hands in the air diba???

My Girl
When Macaulay Culkin dies and Anna Chlumsky attends the funeral. Nuff said.

Other honorable mentions at the top of my head: Forrest Gump, War Horse, Steel Magnolias, Beaches, Little Women, The Last of the Mohicans, Dying Young...

So what do you think of my list? I noticed almost half are cartoons though haha! What about you, what movies have made you cry?
